Michigan Fans whining about Urban Meyer

I refuse to read Michiscum blogs, so making a relevant comment will be difficult. Michiscum sucks. I'm really happy with Urban and his staff. That's all I've got.

I feel like the guy who decides to watch the tape on The Ring just to see what's on it...

Anyway, I read it.  It doesn't really say much and the point doesn't really come across well either.  I think the author is trying to say that Urban Meyer shouldn't be the standard by which all other coaches of the Big Ten are measured.  He doesn't like that Urban Meyer is getting all of the media attention.

Here is my response to that...he went 12-0, with a team that posted a 6-7 record the year before. Yes, they were better than their record indicated that year, but he still did it while recruiting top 5 classes.

For argument's sake, who the hell does the author want to be the face of the Big Ten?  Brady Hoke?  Maybe someone with more experience coaching in the B1G like Kirk Ferentz...

scUM's fans are butthurt because they're not getting any love from the national media for losing to good teams last year.

This.

They can prove themselves by playing better and winning games like Urban Meyer did.  He came in to monumental expectations and while it wasn't always pretty, he finished the year without a loss.

Urban Meyer has an established reputation of excellence that he earned.

Brady Hoke has an established reputation for eating hot wings, not wearing shirts with sleeves, and forgetting that Ohio University is in Athens.

It was pretty funny. If Michigan had brought in a Saban to replace Rich Rod I guess we would be obsessing about their coach too.. I still cannot believe the way he closed this last class.. This may be the best time ever to be an OSU fan!

The post in the OP Link was in response to an earlier post by the same author. Link below:

http://www.maizenbluenation.com/2013/02/we-are-all-witnesses.html

I'm guessing the author got major blow back, from the folk at TSUN, for his original post.

To quote from the original (earlier) post:

"Ohio State isn't scared of Brady Hoke, short-sleeves and all, or Michigan. Not with their savior, Urban Meyer at the helm. He's as close to a 'can't miss' as there is. For how much Jim Tressel owned Michigan, that was simply just a taste of what the Urban Meyer era will be like. It's not a question of if he'll dominate Michigan, it's for how long."

I'm not sure whether the blogger was being sarcastic, but most of the original is in praise of Urban.

I'm sorry, a coach with 2 BCS titles to his credit and 2 undefeated teams outside of those championships, who can recruit as well or better than any other coach in America, is not hype. He's that good.  One other thing, he can say Michigan "handed" Ohio State the game this year all he wants, bottom line is they lost and we won.  How many games did Lloyd "hand" to Tressel?

Yeah.  Sorry scUM fans - not crossing the 50 in the second half of The Game this year isn't "handing us the game" - it's an example of our D stepping it up and locking it down.  I don't want to hear whining about their OC or Hoke or whomever dropping the ball.  They're part of the team, aren't they?!  scUM lost, we won - exaclty as BTAlbert says.

bigbadbuck's picture
bigbadbuck on 20 Feb 2013 - 12:11am #

Lets se, so far we've heard that they lost because Denard wasn't used properly and that Al Borges doesn't know football to this? Missagain handed the Bucks the game? I'm sorry your offense sucked so badly in the second half Wolverqueens but know this.......It had nothing to do with you girls handing us the game and everything to do with our defense winning the game

Well, to be totally fair, Borges called a completely bland and predictable second half. I mean, I was having flashbacks to walrus ball just watching it. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that they "gave us the game", but their offensive playcalling sure as hell didn't try to win it. Our defense played one hell of a second half, and it's taking nothing away from their performance to note that Michigan tried to out-muscle us--a scenario that wasn't exactly optimal, considering Denard Robinson's unique talents.

I'm sure that Michigan fans just feel a little Bollman-esque frustration after watching their OC futilely telegraph play after play into the teeth of our defense. I could care less; we won, and their cries of going the game away only point to the fact that Hoke's preferred offensive style (even if it under-utilizes certain personnel) couldn't match up.

I don't disagree at all, and I'm sure on this very site many said the same thing about us in the 2nd USC game.  It still doesn't change the result though and in 10 years when we are looking back at Urban's record against Michigan the 2012 version of the game won't have an asterisk next to it saying W(but Michigan gave it to them)

Seriously...SHUT.UP.  I hate HATE people who try to make themselves feel better by saying "we handed them that game" ...you lost...get over it...it's not giving credit or due when you try to make the win less "real" in your mind. I can't stand people who are not gracious in defeat.

Yes, the butthurt is strong with this one ...

Didn't have the patience to get through the original post "praising" Meyer, but I think I got the gist. The sarcasm was pretty obvious, despite the fact that most of what the post said was actually ... right. "Don't get me wrong, I love Michigan and I love Brady Hoke, but he's no Urban Meyer...the Recruiter, the Offensive Prognosticator, the Visionary, the Leader." You can hurl insults disguised as adulation all you want, but the record kinda speaks for itself. And I don't mean the record at OSU, which is impressive, but very short, but everything before that as well. I mean, not everyone can snag a guy no one has ever heard of before with a sub-.500 record. Some schools just have to settle for the much more suspect Urban Meyers. He may have won some, but that exit from Florida sure overshadows everything else he's done.

Sarcasm aside, I know no one had heard of Tressel at the time of his hiring either (though by the end of his second year everyone had heard of him), and that's fine. All highly successful coaches were unknown before they became highly successful. The thing that kills me about the meatchicken fans is how they can already see that Hoke >>>> Meyer. All I have to say is better them than us.

bigbadbuck's picture
bigbadbuck on 20 Feb 2013 - 12:41am #

Another big difference between (C) Hoke and Tressel was Tress won several Championships at YSU, so he already had a fairly credible resume  when he arrived in Columbus unlike (C) Hoke when he arrived at Missagain

Condescending is what I got from the post... Not worth the 10 mins to read such smug.

Save us from what we've for so long considered acceptable. We're not going to beat the SEC as a whole, we need one man, one coach to stand out and lead us. Lead us to glory Urban. We are all witnesses.

Don't want Urban to be the face and voice of the B!G? Fine, then the other B!G athletic directors need to man up and give Urban some competition, and right now, Hoke might (kinda sorta) be the only viable one. O'Brien might have been one if there weren't the restrictions on his program. With the kind of money BTN is making the conference, the other schools have pretty much run out of valid excuses.

what an idiot, if meyer isnt the standard who is? if no one else within the b1g is going to call out the other programs who is? urban seems to be the only one who realizes the b1g is the best hope to end the sec domination and if they cant, long term its going to be a bigger problem.  instead of criticizing meyer this guy should drop an email to coach hoke and tell him to step up.  no balls b1g.  maybe im just a homer but i am completely in urbans corner with his comments about the b1g, DO YOUR JOBS BETTER

Michigan had 3 primetime games this season, including the Kickoff Classic.  They faced an undefeated OSU on a national broadcast and played in one of the best non-BCS bowl matchups of the season.  They lost all five games.

If the original post from TOS was complaining about media attention, Michigan had its chances.  Unfortunately for fans like myself, that attention turned negative thanks to the obliteration in Dallas, the six turnover night in South Bend, the injury/Bellomy nightmare in Lincoln, the 2nd-half disappearance in Columbus, and the Clowney explosion/big play bonanza in the Outback Bowl.

I understand not liking Meyer; I don't like Meyer.  However, to argue that he's not the best coach in the B1G today is misguided, at best.  I also know what it's like when the new guy at work takes your glory and starts making suggestions to the boss.  I think Urban's points are valid regarding the conference, but his message wasn't for Michigan, to begin with.

I agree that the conference needs to step it up in recruiting, coaching staffs, facilities, and regaining a winning tradition.  Still, I understand why the other schools in the conference took exception to the way that Urban went about sharing his opinion after one season in the B1G.  Sure he went undefeated and has an impeccable resume, but I see why they would angry about the new guy trying to call the shots, right or wrong.

Me too, but the way he did it will be more likely to impact change, then if it was just mentioned behind closed doors at the B1G meetings.  He put them all on blast, it's on them to prove him wrong now.

Both good points. I would also say that urban, based on being an Ohio native, with time coaching in the Midwest (OSU, ISU, BG, ND)is speaking as much as a native of the Midwest/ B1G, as he is as the coach of tOSU. He may also want to see the tarnished image of the Big 10 he grew up with , restored.

But if I'm on the outside looking in, I wouldn't take it that way either. Without looking at all the B1G coaching resumes, he may have more tenure as a Midwesterner than some of the other B1G coaches. Just a thought.

I honestly think it's because he knows that if his team has 1 loss, with the shit show the conference has become, his team will likely be on the outside looking in most years.
