Manti runs 40 in 4.82 at combine

You think this 4.82 40 will drop his latest ESPN projections from Mel K, who had him 12th?

2 offensive lineman beat this time.

GOOD! This might dissuade the Bears from taking him. Ignore the whole Catfish thing, the guy just isn't a dynamite prospect. He's a middle linebacker who will make tackles and get lost in the middle of NFL caliber lines. He played one team with NFL caliber linemen and they spent the whole game doing mean things to him. He's a nice pick up in the late 2nd, early 3rd. This idea that he's a first round pick was laughable, now it should appear impossible.

He just isn't worth one of the top 50 picks in the draft.

Be careful, knowing the Bears, they will think he is the next Urlacher. Your description of Teo is that of Urlacher. Although I think Urlacher has a bit more speed.

If the Bears confuse him with Urlacher then there is no hope for them. Brian was probably the most physically gifted linebacker the NFL has ever seen given his combination of size and speed. The worst part about Te'o is that the slimmed DOWN to run his absolute best 40 and this was what he came up with. He's short and light-dude is a WLB, not an MLB.

After re-reading my comment, I realize I sound like I'm taking a shot at Urlacher. I meant it to be a shot towards Bears management. IMO they have been terrible in their decisions over the last few years whether it be drafting, trading, or free agency. They have had a championship caliber defense for the past ten years and have yet to put together a competent offense. Unfortunately, now it looks as if the window is slowly closing on that defense do to age. They may only have a few years left of being great defense. If this was Lovie and company it would not surprise me if they drafted Teo but hopefully the new regime has some sense to help Cutler out a bit. For the record, Teo is no Urlacher by any means of the imagination!

Gotchya.

In all reality, I see the Bears attacking the G and C positions in free agency. If Tyler Eiffert falls to them in the draft, they will take him, then they can use their second round pick on a tackle and hope he's the guy. Assuming a few pieces drop, I see the Bears addressing a combination of at least G\TE\T\C in the draft and free agency. Ideally you want to draft tackle because if Long and\or Clady hit open waters they'll demand a kings ransom. Guards and Centers are generally more affordable.

The Bears are reaping the benefits of being one of the worst drafting teams in the league. This draft more than ever is a big one because you have a closing window on your offense and you are really in QB Hell. I love Jay Cutler and he's good enough to not have to go out and upgrade at QB but not good enough (so far what he's shown) to win you a title.

Disclaimer: I can't ignore the Catfish thing. Lennay Kekua clocked him at a 4.28.

On a serious note, I agree with BrewstersMillions - he's about as good of a prospect as Rey Maulaluga was coming out of USC (who ran a 4.91). Not 1st Round material.

Luckily for Te'o ILBs aren't asked to run 40 yards in a straight line. His other workouts were fine including the cone drill and shuttles. Thinking he is a late 2nd early 3rd guy is laughable. It is still very possible he goes in the first round, if you listen to people who actually know the draft instead of just retweeting 40 times.

I guess it depends on whether or not pro scouts see him as the player that got overmatched against Bama or the "Heisman contender" that had a hell of a lot of luck with deflected and underthrown balls this season. Personally, I've never seen a 1st rounder when I look at Te'o, some disputed 40 time isn't going to change that for me.

That said, why don't you ask a certain Super Bowl winning coach whether or not he thinks speed is important in an ILB? http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/2/25/4028664/john-harbaugh-manti-teo-40-gif

I will never understand why he's so solidly predicted to go in the first round. I'm going to laugh my ass off at whoever picks him, complete waste of a first round pick.

(and for reference I'm not saying that based on his 40 time, I'm saying it based on watching him play)

No idea what kind of NFL LB he will be, but 40 time means absolutely nothing to an inner linebacker.

Ever watch a slow ILB cover a running back out of the backfield on a pass play, or an athletic TE on a seam route?

cplunk's picture
cplunk on 25 Feb 2013 - 6:34pm #

If an ILB is covering a TE on a seam route, there has been a scheme breakdown.

OLB and strong safety are usually the guys covering pass routes in the NFL.

The 40 times do matter, even for lineman and definitely for all linebacker spots.

If your inner LB is running 40 yards, you have much bigger problems with your team than that guy's speed.

The 10 yard split and the various cone agility drills are far, far more important for a DL and ILB.

Show me a team drafting its inner linebackers on speed and I'll show you a team that has a high draft pick every year.

You must have missed Storm Klein against Indiana this year.  I think he was within 30 yards of the running back, by the time he scored on the pass play, in the first quarter.

College. And, in fact, when we were in the midst of scheme issues.

Lance Briggs, for example, ran a 4.78.

Look, there is a difference between straight line speed, acceleration, and agility. Straight line speed means a lot for a CB, S, or WR. The further you are from the center, the more it means. As you get closer to the center, acceleration and agility mean much, much more.

An RB that can stop on a dime and cut, then hit top speed in two steps is going to have much more success than an RB that can run a 4.3 but has average cutting ability and takes several steps to accelerate. Barry Sanders is a perfect example.

there are absolutely circumstances where a DL or ILB will need straight line speed, but those circumstances are much fewer than when he'll need acceleration and agility.

If Teo kills the cone drills and has a good 10 yard split, you'll see one of the smart perennial playoff teams- Pats, Ravens, Steelers- take him late in the first round. Those teams have made a killing over the years taking guys that fell because other teams put too much attention into the 40.

I have other doubts about Teo. I'm just saying that basing his NFL future on his 40 is to miss what really matters.

clashmore_mike's picture
clashmore_mike on 25 Feb 2013 - 8:03pm #

Good post here.

FTR, Te'o performed well in the cone and shuttle drills, better than Olgetree in both. He was among the best in the on field drills where he needed to be able to move his feet and change direction were handled well by him too.

If a team is considering drafting a MLB with its 1st round pick, he must be a stud who is capable of playing all three downs.

With Te'o, he is not an explosive player who is really athletic and capable being all over the field.  At 6'1 and 241, you would expect more speed coming from a guy who has a first round grade on him.

Not to speak for anyone but when teo was in the running for heisman, a lot of the stats teo posted that Espn was force feeding the general college football public were actually equal to or very very close to shazier's stats. Yet shazier received no love compared to the great n mighty manti teo from south bend.

I think RDS' stats were better in most categories except interceptions.  Te'o did have a lot of INTs so at least he's got good hands working for him.

Te'o was really good at catching bad/deflected passes. Other than that Shazier was superior in metrics like tackles, solo tacklers, TFLs (by a huge margin), sacks and forced fumbles.

Lon_Paul's picture

Why would I bring up Notre Dame when I'm talking about RDS's 40 time? Because I'm posting on a thread about a former Notre Dame player's 40 time and I want to rub our superior athleticism in the golden domers' smug faces maybe?

clashmore_mike's picture

Ha, I'd prefer not to start a war of words on here because I enjoy reading the information and from time to time the opinions of Buckeye fans (also because it wouldn't be a fair fight as you would be heavily outmatched), but that is a fairly smug thing for you to say.

Lon_Paul's picture
Lon_Paul on 27 Feb 2013 - 1:24am #

You're saying I'm smug yet you boast about how I would be heavily outmatched against you in a war of words? haha, ironic. And I doubt it.

I admit I like to take potshots at the Domers. If that makes me a bad person, then I guess I have to live in sin for the rest of my life haha. If you don't like me ripping on Notre Dame, I don't know what to tell you. Everyone deserves their own little irrational hatreds.  Mine happens to be Notre Dame, and I'm not gonna apologize for it.

There was thread about Te'o running a slow 40 time. I posted about Shazier's excellent 40 time and made a dig at Notre Dame. If you don't like it, you don't have to reply to my posts, man . . .
