The Game, at 8.
How will this transform the event?
One thing that comes to my mind, is wondering how this schedule change will impact the communites and businesses of Columbus and Ann Arbor.
What do you guys think?

I'd be scarred for a lot of people's safety quite honestly. 2006 was an after dark game, if not entirely considered a night game and it was subdued by the passing of Bo. But I feel like you get a few hundred thousand drunk rival fans together all night, you're asking for a riot. I think the noon game keeps people a little contained: tired from getting up early, less time to drink during the day, not necessary to stay the night because if you lose you can skip town and go home in shame. Whereas the night game you'll be well rested and well served, spending the night since the game isn't over til late which means after hours mingling with the opposing fans in bars. Just a recipe for disaster.

This is also the worst case scenario too. Security and police presence have significantly upgraded since 7 years ago, because of such things.
The other arguments could be made for having The Game in an 5pm or 8pm slot as far as:
1. Post-game income generated (especially the 5pm game), by all the businesses on campus, shopping centers, hotels, & entertainment venues that cater to the late crowds.
2. A much better overall game experience and atmosphere, not just for attending, but also for recruiting.
3. It's better for travel overall, especially for those traveling from Cleveland, Toledo, Indianapolis, or TSUN.
There are jerks everywhere - including in our fan base - and altercations of some sort can happen, but changing the time slot doesn't necessarily mean the chances are significantly greater - They don't seem to have a significant problem with Bama-Auburn, USC-ND/UCLA/Oregon/Stanford, OU-Texas, Florida-Florida St. or the round robin of SEC games with LSU, Florida, Georgia, SC, and now Texas A&M, along with the latter mentioned.
I admire your compassion for folks, but don't be such a worry wart. =P

All great points. Also, I enjoy your graphic artwork. +1
To your third point: It's a boost to tourism. Makes, The Game, the centerpiece of a weekend out of town, for folks living far enough away from C-bus and AA. Hotel/meal/air/rail deals. etc.
Weekends out of town: one of the best reasons to visit and live, in B1G Country!
I agree with that. I should give people the benefit of the doubt I guess, but that mob mentality can take over and cause a lot of havoc. I've been in a riot after a sporting event -- come on, I went to MSU -- and it gets ugly quickly. Sometimes the police presence can cause the riot.
I know it can be done safely and I'd love to see it. The 2006 was a memorable one for many reasons. It was perfect storm of a lot of special things that will never happen together at once again.
The added revenue of people staying the night and hanging out to go out to eat/drink/be merry would be enticing to local businesses.

EVER.
I know the tradionalist view of The Game being at noon. But the 06 game was magic and it started at 3:30. I have never been to games that were more electric than Texas/USC/Wisconsin at night. I would be absolutly all for this. I am sorry tradionalist, I understand your arguement, but I hope you lose it.

I remember in my NCAA Football 2006 video game for PS3 - they'd play The Game at night for some reason. It was pretty cool, though. The atmosphere was electric. I could notice a difference in the way my team prepared for that game. I could see it in their eyes. They were just flat out GEEKED to be playing under the Ohio Stadium lights! Needless to say, my OSU team cleaned scUM's clock like every time I played, (the one game I was losing - I "accidentally" hit the reset button). Bottom line though: a really electric atmosphere that built up all day long. The players, the fans, even us coaches...we were all extra pumped about playing at night. Must be the adrenalin.

Look I'm not mad at this at all, even if it's said in jest - there IS some validity to this in game. Was the first time they introduced the "Race for the Heisman" mode along with the "Home Field Advantage" feature which was just flat out awesome.
I would blow up my whole schedule (playing on the Heisman difficulty) and schedule most of the big boys from the other conferences as away games, removing the likes of Miami (OH) or Bowling Green St. for the likes of Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, Florida, USC, etc, schools with the higher rated home fields and do my own home-and-home series with them.
It was awesome making big plays, or taking underclassmen into a place and watching them get rattled or make mistakes on audibles or QBs get happy feet in the pocket while the screen rumbled because of the crowd noise!

The Game at night would be off the hook cool. Bring it on. Especially since we will be paying a "premium" price for it.

I'd imagine, though, that if Ohio State were to host The Game under the lights, provided that it's the unparallelled success that we all think it is, Brandon would pretty much have to follow suit.
One would think. And I'm all for it, probably not every year, but at least when it's a top 15 matchup. I just wanted to provide what I had seen Brandon say on it.
It's not like the sun shines a whole lot in November, anyway.

Hail, you are so right The Sun and Blue have been muted in November over the last dozen years. 8D
I like a 3:30 to 5pm start for The Game. This gives me plenty of time before and after the game. I'd like to party a bit after we spank Hoke again, and if the game starts at 8pm, it doesn't get over until 11ish. If I have a 3 hour drive home on top of it, that sucks. Just my opinion.
One other thing in regards to Brandon's comments: they don't have a problem having rivalry games in the SEC at night. Don't be skeered, Dave.
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
I remember back in 2006 for the Game of the Century, it was incredibly enhanced by being a 3:30 start and having the entirety of the second half played under the lights. The place was rocking in a way that just isn't possible at Noon. You could feel the energy the crowd was generating. The Nebraska game this past season had a similar feel as far as crowd energy goes, and that's because it was at night.
Night games are the day's event. If it starts at 8, it means the whole day has been building to this climatic crescendo. You can't say the same thing for a noon game, it's just not possible to get as excited for it when you know that you have the rest of the day left once it's over.
I honestly don't see the need for a 8pm matchup for "The Game".
I think that it just makes more sense to have the night game begin at 5pm or 5:30pm. Just looking up some data, last year the sun was setting at approximately 5:10pm on November 24th, 2012 in Columbus, Ohio. So if you start the game at 5:30pm you will still have your night game and if you decide to go to the game you can leave around 8:30pm and still make it home reasonably (2.5hr drive for me).
But if I am watching the game at home I really don't care what time it starts.

Is it just me, or does Dave Brandon sound like he's being a real pussy?
He sure does. Sounds like m*ch*gans nanny.

He does, but I can't blame him a whole lot. If there was a "riot" or even a death, that would come back on the ADs, to a degree. I do think fights would be more rampant, but I don't see the others being a strong possibility.
Does anyone recall Auburn/Alabama, Texas/Oklahoma, USC/UCLA, Oregon/Oregon St, Florida/FSU ever having a primetime local start time?
Those seem to be some of the most intense rivalries, aside from The Game. I don't remember any being true night games.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

I complete agree with this. That was my point above. You might have riots at a noon game anyway, but if you can do something as simple as change the kickoff time to help reduce the chances of a death, you do that simple thing, not even a question. No amount of increased revenue to the city should outweigh safety.
I understand if you can up the police presence, etc. because of the extra money, but we shouldn't do cost benefit analysis of a possible human life.

At the end of the day it's all about recruiting. That is the lifeblood of your program. Everything else is secondary. If having more night games can give us an advantage such as giving more traveling time for recruits to come, a more energized atmosphere, the full game day experience, then I am all in for it.
