That 4th down remind anyone else of that glorious night in early 2003? Bet Jim Harbaugh wishes Terry Porter was reffing tonight.
By the way, ever see this story? http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/6483719
Just found it, I always thought I saw a hold/obstruction before the ball was thrown, but they never showed that part of the replay.
Hope someone called a WAAAAAMBULANCE for Jimmy Tantrum. Just dial Whine One One...

If Terry Porter was reffing, it STILL would be the right call!!
as soon as i saw that play i was like huh that looks like the ohio state miami PI play.
That hold was much worse than the hold in the 02 title game. The defender had a better grip and held it much longer. I personally liked one of the announcers saying it was a good no call. uh ok.
Horrible no call, and they missed a blatant hold on against the Ravens (Holding #24 of the 49ers) while the punter was running around.
"Don't put syrup on shit, and tell me it's pancakes"
No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
Yup, that
hughold on the punt/safety was just ridiculous.but it wouldn't have made a difference as no time would have been put back on the clock after the play. They'd just assess the penalty.

Hmmm, I see your point, seems like a loophole that ought to be closed by adding time: time play started + 5 secs or something.
So glad you wrote this. I thought I was the only one that saw that. Shoulda been a few more seconds on the clock.
It was a blatant hold, but what's the point of calling a hold on an intentional safety play?
Class of 2010.
Because it would have been a safety and the clock would have stopped a few seconds quicker. So maybe SF gets a heave at the endzone.
Thing you don't hear as much and is the rebuttal to the PI call in the 02' NC game.....the 3rd down play that Jenkins catches and they call incomplete that would have all but iced the game in regulation.....no instant replay, terrible call and miami scored a field goal on it......
As for the Superbowl......well they just call the 49'ers on baltimores previous drive for a PI on 3rd and 8 that extended the drive 4 and a half minutes or so from the 7 mark down to the 4 mark on the clock...had that not been called the 49'ers would have had 2 shots at a winning touchdown.......but given that they just made the same call for the other team it would be fitting that the make the same call even if it is to decide the game.....
Yup, agree on both points.
Also, there was a horrible no-call for pass interference/holding on Chris Gamble - the Miami guy clearly held his Gamble's jersey when there was like 2-3 minutes left. If the refs throw the flag - we sustain our drive and Miami likely doesn't get their tying field goal - no OT and no "phantom call."
Ehhh, it's not like San Fran didn't benefit from that "Running into the Kicker" call where Akers began falling prior to contact being made with his plant leg. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
Besides, it's not like the play that they ran on fourth and goal was a world beater, anyways. It was completely rushed; I'm amazed that the intended receiver even had a play on the ball.
And if you are going back corner fade, why aren't you going to the guy who practically invented\perfected the play? Randy Moss is the guy for that throw, not Crabtree. Shoot, I would have rather seen Vernon Davis on the same throw. Awful decision.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
One thing that stood out to me is on I think a TD drive for the Ravens, the refs missed a obvious offensive PI call. Had there been no interference, the Niners would have came down with the INT.
2nd and goal from the 5yd line in a 4 down situation. How do you not run the ball on both 2nd and 3rd down. Poor play calls cost em the game there, not the no call.
Agreed. Not that it ended up mattering, since they didn't score the TD, but I was thinking there was still a lot of time left on the clock. I would have run it anyways just to use clock so Baltimore had less time to come back if SF potentially gained the lead. I know the Raven's D was stuffing the run a lot, but they had 3 plays to get 5 yards. Pound the ball, get in the endzone, and use most of the remaining clock (or force time outs).
Hindsight's 20-20, but I was thinking this when it was 2nd and 5 (goal). And then they failed 3 plays in a row.
Just shows how much of a man Porter is that he stepped up and made the right call in that situation. Had he not, people would have come out of the woodwork to defend him under the pretense that "you don't make that call at the end of the game". That pretense is BS, if its a penalty in the 1st quarter its a penalty as time is expiring. Some refs are just afraid to make that call. Thanks again Terry for having the backbone to stand up and do the right thing.
Totally agree with this. That whole "you don't make that call at the end of the game" idea drives me insane. So the rules don't apply at the end of the game? That's what you're basically agreeing to if you agree to that idea.
If Terry Porter doesn't make that call, then it's OSU fans that are butthurt over his decision, not Miami fans. And if that ref threw a flag last night, then it's Ravens fans that are butthurt instead of 49ers fans. Either way, somebody's butthurt, some people criticize the call, and some people defend the call (and many have defended Porter's call that night just as much as many have criticized it).
I think it's a judgment call, and it's up to the referee as to whether to throw the flag or not. Porter's judgment was that there was a foul, and the ref last night's judgment was no foul. Neither are bad calls - they're judgment calls, and they're great for the team that it goes in favor of, and painful for the other team. I just don't think that it should automatically be no flag just because of the time of the game and situation.
Class of 2010.
Reminds me of the 1972(?) game where Thom Darden held our receiver and Woody started tearing up the yardmarkers
I can't stand the ravens, but it was not a hold.
No call was the right call.
Blame Habaugh and the horrible play calling on those four plays, Harbaugh blew it and he wants to blame someone else.
No class = Jim Harbaugh
I was amazed that he did not at least try on a few plays to get CK out of the pocket like he did the whole second half.
Michigan Sucks!
Could argue both sides got away with alot of no calls. The game was decided by the players. Baltimore happened to make more positive than San Fran. At end of game 4ht & goal, both players did their best to win. GOOD NO CALL!!!
