Alex Smith to Chiefs

49ers have agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Browns fans, are you disappointed you didn't get Smith or happy with Weeden?

Neither? I do not think Weeden is the future, but I also do not think Alex Smith would be very good in Cleveland.  I imagine that looking a lot like he did in San Fran before Harbaugh came along.

I agree with this... I don't think Weeden is the future, but I don't think Smith would be either.

Smith would be an upgrade, but I wouldn't throw away our draft or pay the money to get him.

Nothing against Alex Smith, but he's only had to learn about a half dozen offensive systems as a pro. I wish him the best, but the Browns would be better riding Weeden out, giving McCoy another shot or wait and see how the draft looks next year.

The only QB I think can develop into a star in this class is Tyler Wilson. I think if Aaron Murray declared he would have been a top 5 pick.  IMO the Browns should ride it out with Weeden until a better option arrives.  I really like Wilson, but the Browns have many needs.  Curious to see what happens.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

As a Chiefs fan I am concerned! He isn't the stud I was hoping for but at the same time, Andy Reids offense works for him. It helps a lot to have the right offense and despite Reids affection to passing way too much, it is a base west coast offense and that works for Alex Smith. Plus I think with Alex being more of a passing QB than what Reid had in Philly, he might be more conventional with his play calling and run the ball a bit more.

2nd round pick. Not sure how I feel about it either. Is he really that much better than the potential of some of the guys that we could have had with that pick? I think so but what if he is what we all know he is and someone like EJ Manuel becomes a stud. Tough feelings.

Well at least he isn't Matt Cassel! I actually say this is my want:

  • Make this trade
  • Resign Albert. I like Joekel but why, why, why let go of a decent LT and waste a #1 overall pick.

I hope to trade down but if not, please lets get some defensive players!

The bigger story is that now the Chiefs can avoid the whole ugly mess of feeling as if they have to draft Geno Smith.

I agree with this. I always feel like the top 10 NFL picks are a lot of reaches. Seems like they take this guy because they're supposed to instead of by need.

but drafting Luke Joekel when you already have a decent LT in Albert would be just as much of a dumbass move. Resign Albert, draft defense.

It was for a 2nd round pick and a conditional 2014 mid-round pick.

High price to pay considering that is the 34th overall pick.  I'm glad the Browns passed.  High price to pay in terms of a pick and in salary.  I give the Browns credit for not overpaying

I wouldn't give the browns too much credit just yet. They still have Weeden.

Browns don't have a second round pick to give anyway. They dropped it on that WR last year in suplimental draft.Weeden isn't the future QB anyway.Just a holdover until they can get someone better.Never understood why they wasted a first round pick on him anyway!!Josh Gordon was the WR I believe.

Correct on Gordon.

I don't care about not getting Smith.  He certainly wasn't traded because he was really great...

I can't really agree with you on Grbac.  He was a backup in SF, and was a serviceable starter in KC.

joe made quite a run there with limited players to help... i believe he got elway, and took them to the afc championship behind a very strong defense. i would be very surprised if any of the qbs from this draft class turn out to be anything spectacular.

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

Alex Smith was nothing short of amazing this year before he was hurt. That said, I like Weeden.
I don't understand how he is the target of so much hate as a rookie. He has super young receivers and although TRich will be good, the run game wasn't that good last year.

This offense has an opportunity to be much better than expected. Gordon was very good and Little seemed to "get it" about midseason. Norv Turner should help Weeden to take another step forward. My prediction is that his passing yards will be about the same 3,500. There will be a slight improvement on his TD to INT ratio.  22 TDs, 15 INTs  In sum, a decent season.
This guy has some promise. He has shown flashes, give him a chance.

Don't resent Weeden as a player or person as much as I do my beloved Browns for taking him so high. It's not as if the Browns were gonna be in contention for the division or playoffs, but he is 29.How many years do you think he's gonna start for them??? Could have used the pick for a position of need ie WR ,TE, Defensive guy.

I get that he is 29 but his body hasn't been taking a "football beating" for all those years. For much of the time he was in baseball and not taking beatings. So his age is less of a problem than it seems.

As for last year's draft, I think it was silly to get TRich and I didn't like the Weeden pick at the time. I still think TRich was a reach, however, as Mel Kiper said- Weeden would likely be the 1st QB taken this year. We got him in the late first. Think about that. We needed a QB and this year there is no one worth taking (Geno Smith has "bust written" all over him).

I agree with you. Weeden may have been a reach but they would have been reaching for a WR at 22.  Personally, I was an advocate for Cordy Glenn or Janoris Jenkins.

Nevertheless, I see the QB as a position where you must reach to get your guy.  But I also believe it is a position where you cannot just take a QB for the sake of just taking to fill a need. You cannot take the guy that it is not sold on or confident just to make an upgrade over the current QB. If a team is sold on a player and they believe he is a franchise QB, then you must do everything you can to get him.  Right or wrong, that is how it is playing out.  If the guy actually lives up to that hype or is a bust, that is a different story.  It is a premium position and somebody else is willing to move up and leapfrog you if you are not willing to pull the trigger.  The 2011 draft yielded that panic or paranoia with Locker and Ponder at 8 and 12 respectively.  Did those guys go a little higher than many anticipated?  Yes they did.   Washington paid the king's ransom to get RG3.

Gambling and reaching for a QB can either pay off or set a team back.  But in this competitive league, teams are willing to take that risk.  If you don't somebody is willing to.   Where does Weeden fit?  I am not sure, I am really not sure.  I really need to see another season in a different offense to make that determination.

Honsetly the only reason I hated the Weeden pick was because they reached for him. He was going to fall to the 2nd round. I think it was a foolish pick. I wanted them to take David DeCastro, instead he goes to Pittsburgh where he will probably kick our asses for a decade and be a pro bowler.    Joe Thomas+David DeCastro+Alex Mack= nasty. I'd guess Richardson would have liked that pick.

Thank God the Browns didn't go after Alex Smith. Also, I don't get why Weeden draws so much vile from Browns fans, he was 2nd amongst all rookie QBs in passing yards, although his QBR, wasn't anything to brag about. He had one of the youngest WR corps in the league, and one that was far more inexperienced than any of the WR corps the other rookies had. He played like a rookie, he showed a lot of promise in some games, and then in others he would make face palm-worthy plays. People rag on him about his age, but 1) He hasn't taken the beating that most 29 year olds in the NFL have and 2) If he can give the Browns 5 years of solid QB play, that'll be more years of solid QB they've had combined, since they came back.

Agreed William, I just feel like the Browns have been wasting picks the last few years.  I'll admit I was wrong on Gordon in the suplemental draft.  I just feel they haven't got the most out of their picks. I also don't think Dick Jauron should have been shown the door. It just feels like we take a step forward, then 3 back. The defense was a pleasant surprise this season given all the unknowns. So why tear that apart?

As a Chiefs fan I'm excited. Then again they could have brought in anybody except maybe Joe Bauserman, and it would have been an upgrade (and he couldn't have done any worse). I think Alex will fit into Andy Reid's system. They may have paid a high price, but they were desperate. I agree that they don't need to draft a left tackle with the #1 pick. They are OK there. The defense has been strong. I would like to see either another corner, or a another WR opposite Bowe.

Most locals are not excited. I will wait and see. If they trade out of #1 for a lower first round pick and get a second round pick as well I think it will be worth it.

To be honest, if the browns were seriously considering trading for a qb I would want them to take a look at ryan mallett. Rumor is that the patriots are looking to make him available to acquire draft picks. That being said, I think they have to stick with weeden for the time being. If they can shore up the offensive line and can find a couple more viable options in the passing game, I think weeden can get the job done. If gordon can continue to develop as a primary option, and greg little can stay engaged, there are two solid options. Jordan cameron has potential, benjamin is a burner who just needs to be coached up and norwood is serviceable. Gordon and weeden seem to have a nice chemistry between them. A pass catching FB would be a plus as well...marecic, aside from the fact he can't stay healthy, just isn't getting it done. Add another vertical threat as well, and see what weeden can do with an improved stable of pass catchers. If he still sucks, then by all means, there should be a couple nice qb prospects to choose from next year!

Why would anyone wish that curse for Alex? Making him ruin his career at the browns...
