ummm...don't think anyone said anything about his play. His story, true or not, is flawed and is very hard to believe whether she is real and died or fake and "died." There is a good chance that he is gay, but I don't hold that against him. He is a quality player and could play in the NFL, but after this whole thing who knows if the guy is a liar or not. I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop into the second round because of this.

Why would he go to that extent? I don't think it's that much of a consipiracy theory to question a lot of things about this guy. Just saying that he's responsible for the questions/theories people make bring up about him --- he did this.
let's be honest --- "just let the kid go onto the NFL and move on" --- that's not going to happen ... because of HIM. He said in multiple interviews that he met her and spent time with her. Again, HE SAID IN MULTIPLE INTERVIEWS THAT HE MET HER AND SPENT TIME WITH HER. There's no way he wasn't in on this. If he was, in fact, duped, then why perpetuate the lie that you met her and she came to Hawai'i when you were on school break?
I want to believe that the guy was duped. I think we'd all like to believe he was the person he has been made to be over the past year. But at the end of the day, the facts are that he repeatedly gave quotes saying that he had met her. No reason to say that if you aren't in on it.

Well despite all this, now supposedly he wasn't in love with her, he really wasn't in a relationship, he just played it up after the media got wind of the story that was already exaggerated. So really, he wasnt in on the hoax but once the fake death (real at the time) came out, he acted it up for the story. So he was lying about his love for her but probably was being fooled the whole time too.
Might also find out later he was duped for some money as well. Probably feels ashamed of that.

1. You can then ride on the real emotional grief you feel about your grandmother dying to fake your emotions about your girlfriend dying. People keep pointing to how genuine his grief seems after her death. Of course it does! His grandmother DID die.
2. His parents, if they thought she was real that is, would be too busy with grief over his grandmother and making funeral arrangements for her to possibly go to the girl's funeral or get too nosy about it.
3. By having her die on that particular day, he could be sure that the funeral would fall right when he had a game to go to, that way he would have an excuse not to go to her "funeral".
For those of you who believed he was catfished:
1. He claims they met in 2009, in person, at Stanford.
2. He and his parents both claim she "visited" him in Hawai'i multiple times.

Just what his father supposedly said to the south bend tribune. and supposedly that was in October of 2012, not anytime before it. Who knows really when he did meet her or if at all and was just lying about that part to stop the questions of "how come you never met her".
If someone told you they met someone online and are dating them, what would be the first question in your mind? "Are they real?, Is it a man pretending to be a woman?" Maybe he was tired of that and just lied to stop it.

I'm not denying that he probably lied about meeting her. I'm just saying there can be many reasons why he would lie about that and still been duped by the hoax. Maybe he doubted the relationship himself but didn't want to throw away what he believed was true love by questioning it, so instead he lied to others as well as lied to himself that it was true.
I also like to point out that everyone is up in arms that he lied for gain but I still see no gain in this for him and all a big headache. So why do it to only make himself look like a victim and a loser. Cus right now, he is not looking great no matter what the truth is.

it is a tale of their meeting but it doesn't say who told the story of how they met. I read that. So we still don't know if he really said he met her at that game or if someone repeated a story they thought was factual.

I work at a university. I can really say there are 22 yr olds who don't know how to Skype. There are also 18 yr olds and the whole range.
Now this is a point I do want to say that will make sense, he listened to what this girl was telling him over the phone and online. He believed her. If she told him some story of why they shouldt meet, he would probably believe it. She probably told him to lie to people as well. I'm not saying I believe this, I'm just playing devils advocate in saying there is plausible deniability for his story.
I understand there are people who don't know how to use skype, but if you are in a long distance relationship you are much more likely know how to, and choose to use skype. I know from personal experience. Also, if he was in a relationship, then why wouldn't he go pay his respects to the family. Well since I wrote that, it came out that he really didn't love her and wasn't that invested in the relationship, so foe him to not try and see her isn't that big of a stretch. He lied about the relationship but was still a victim of a hoax. He just played up the love story because it got him recognition.

While it would be good for the gay population to have a person of this magnitude admit their homosexuality, it would take 10 steps back with the fact that he allegeldy developed this entire hoax to cover it up. I get that its hard to come out while being in sports, but creating, and perpetuating the fact that your supposed girlfriend was hurt in a car accident then died of luekimea is just terrible. If this is true, he made the entire nation feel for him, and absorbed the spotlight. I think I can sum this up in one word, Concussion. Any good lawyer would get a good doctor and crush this story in one 24 hr cycle. Multiple concussions have turned Manti into a pathological liar and the extent of his injuries were kept hidden so that he could play.

I too think this was a cover up for his sexual orientation from the second this story broke. There is nothing new to add from the details on the internet already. What I do want to add is the players who claim they see him with women on campus. First and foremost what he does in public and behind closed doors are 2 seperate matters. He could be "with" a woman just to keep the players from finding that he was gay and never act sexually with them. Secondly how many of the players would be there to witness any sexual acts going on? I believe he was behind this whole "plot" and the only 2 plausible reasons he would start it was to have fun with it or hide a much deeper secret.

The only reason I've thought this could be possible is because a HS teammate of his is linked to this whole hoax at least partially per the Deadspin article. He was in a car accident within a week of "Lennay's" accident.
I'm not completely sure what to believe, but it seems like a pretty public (and over compensating) cover story. I think he's just an attention-seeking kid who didn't know when to quit with a story.
Also, this is not the place to post your gay hate, folks. You never know who is among the Buckeye faithful.
There's not enough evidence there to say this, but I do understand the speculation, because:
* The hoax theory is unbelievable in its face--Te'o has told too many lies about the girl for this to be the case. And if you found out you were hoaxed by someone online (which does happen all the time), you'd "break up" with your girlfriend quietly, not invent a bizarre story about her accident and subsequent death which conveniently happens to also paint you in a heroic light.
* Someone who is gay, a football player, a football player at a Catholic university, and Mormon would have an obvious interest in staying closeted.
* An absent girlfriend would be a good cover for one's lack of interest in local women; and having her die tragically would explain lack of subsequent interest ("I've lost the love of my life; I'm not ready to love again"). On a related note, Mormons tend to marry young, so within his culture, the subtle pressure to begin thinking along those lines has likely already begun.
Obviously, all of this is just a wild-ass guess and is nothing like airtight proof. But it's also the only explanation for Te'o's behavior that is both logical and doesn't make him out to be either a complete creep or just nutso. Is the gay theory crazier than believing he was hoaxed to the extent that he would invent meetings and phone calls that never happened; or that he's enough of a sociopath to invent a LDR and then kill the woman off so as to generate sympathy for a Heisman campaign? I don't see how.

Maybe it started off as a coverup for his sexuality and then morphed quickly into something else once he got famous and he decided to just roll with it and ride the Heisman wave. Nobody said he couldn't be both a closeted, persecuted gay individual AND a cocky attention-whore jock with slimy morals. Both traits could potentially coexist within one person. People are complicated; that's why its always messed up to put people into strict boxes.

The Heisman theory is flawed. If he told friends and teammates about her for nearly a year, he was planning this at least as far back back as October '11. Then he has to bank on all of those picks and tackles and wins and his defense being tops in the country. I guess a grandmother dying might not generate a big sympathy vote, and neither would a girlfriend, though I don't know for sure. But both on the same day would. So then he was continuing this lie with his friends and on twitter/Facebook so that on the off chance he had another personal tragedy, he could kill off his fake girlfriend for more sympathy on the off chance he racked up decent stats in an undefeated season on a #1 defense? And he went ahead with that plan 2 to 3 games in to what was supposed to be the nation's most difficult schedule?? That's one long damn con.
Thread topics like this are precisely why the off season is so terribad for CFB fans. I don't want to sound like an arse but there are other forums were a dude's sexuality can be discussed in-depth.

I doubt he's gay. I'm from hawaii and obviously i'm a fan of his being that he's from here and all.

But, my point is maybe all of that gay marriage stuff influence him to be gay. Say a young Te'o is opening up the Honolulu Times or whatever they call the gay paper there, and he sees the wedding announcement & Wham! there's two dudes announcing their marriage. Maybe Te'o gets curious. Just saying - Hawaii as a state could have played a slow-developing role.
By the way If you're really from Hawaii like you say you are - I would like to know if you're a Samoan type person, (which means a non-white), and if there are really a lot of tarantulas there. Because I would love to visit your state sometime and then go surfing. BUT, being as I am probably scarred from that stupid BRADY BUNCH epsiode I saw a looong time ago, with the damn reoccuring ugly tarantula - I'm still a little freaked out. FUQ! yes, see Samoans live in Hawaii. Somoans are a very gentle & kind people. I used to know a few Somoans. I would drink with them at the bar. And then this one guy I played ball with back a few years ago was Somoan. He was a really cool guy ..
