Given the strides he made in the passing game without any reps to start the season, it isn't totally out of the realm of possibility, especially when comparing the B1G's other players. There really aren't a ton of top playmakers in the B1G. That being said, he would have to do things we haven't yet seen him do in his only full season as a starter, not impossible, but not likely either.
While I agree that playmakers in the B1G are few and far between, I'd put Carlos Hyde and Venric Mark well ahead of Devin Gardner on any potential Heisman list...but then again I like guys who have proven themselves when making predictions for an award that is 11 months away and spring practice hasn't even begun yet as opposed to a QB with accuracy issues who only started 5 games.
I am with RDUBS. Gardner is on the list because there are not a lot of other worthy cadidates. Venric Mark is a nice story but I have a hard time believing a Northwestern player is going to make a serious heisman run (fair or not). El Guapo is a nice candidate but will likely be overshadowed by X-Brax. Maybe someone from Nebraska?
As long as the Missagain fans believe it and we can continue to make fun of them for being so doltish (is that even a word?) it's all good imho
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
Let's be fair. With Borges' track record of developing college QBs (see: McNown, Cade/Campbell, Jason/Lindley, Ryan), there's a chance Gardner could progress into a Heisman candidate. He has the tools - he's talented as hell. Also, with 18 TD in 5 games, he was on pace to match Manzeil's and RG3's totals from the past 2 years.
Do I think Miller is a better candidate? Sadly, yeah, I do. I doubt that Gardner is going to make it to the podium with last year's winner coming back, along with a host of other options. That said, do I think Gardner has the potential to have a special year? Yeah, I do.
As Meat Loaf best said, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Gardener's a ludicrously talented QB. He's nowhere near the home run threat that Miller is with his legs, but he's a very polished passer--in fact, if Miller were to throw with his consistency, he'd have the Heisman locked up by the middle of the season.
Gardener, in my opinion, is a very dark horse--he's got the potential, but with the field that he's up against (of which there's probably a 75% chance that one of Mariota, Miller, or Manziel will win) it's going to be a very uphill climb.
Haha, I realized that as I was typing it. Crazy that the three top dual-threat QBs in the country right now are third year guys with last names that begin with "M".
You know, contrary to poplular opinion around here, I have to agree with you about Gardner. He does have more talent than he'll get credit for on an Ohio State forum but what do you expect man? WASH MY MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP NOW!!!!!
Well here's the problems. Gardner is a nice player but...um is graduating maybe the most dynamic player in their long history and he never got an invite. To be in the heisman conversation, fair or no, you have to at least be in the national championship conversation and lets face it, um won't be. And last, um loses their best wr (roundtree) and frankly their 2nd best (gardner) and I just don't see him riding Dileo to the podium. Anything is possible, but there are loads of really good players in college football. The heisman isn't a really good player award.
"While starting Michigan's final five games, Gardner compiled 18 total touchdowns, which projects to 47 over a 13-game season — the same number as (Robert) Griffin and (Johnny) Manziel in their Heisman-winning years," Bennett writes
Michigan/Gardner: South Carolina, Ohio State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa
Texas A&M/Johnny: Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, Sam Houston, Miss St.
Now tell me who went against better competition getting those touchdowns. Also the 47 touchdowns the Heisman winners got were with their feet and on the ground. This is a huge hole in the writer argument to extroplate touchdowns for Garner throughout a 13 game season. Once again, DG is proven to be overrated!
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
Oklahoma: #64, Mizzou: #58, Alabama: #1, Sam Houston: #27 in the FCS(!), Miss St: #52
Average (without Sam Houston): 43.75
Even if you take out Sam Houston and factor in Alabama's #1 ranking, Gardner's competition STILL averaged out to be tougher. ALSO, of Gardner's 18 TD's, 7 were on the ground. Manziel had 19 rushing TDs. Gardner averaged 1.4 rushing TDs per game - over 13 games, that averages out to 18.2 rushing TDs.
I don't think DG is better than RG3, and that season he had was amazing - so I'm not even gonna bother doing the math for him.
I just think the author ability to assume he can have comparable numbers to the other two Heisman winners is kinda silly. Our course we can sit here and manipulate stats to prove one another wrong but I agree with what you said. I upvoted you're comment for proving where I have holes in my argument as well. +1

I agree with you, and I think it'll take a ton of progress for Gardner to be in the conversation. The article is...whatever. This is all settled on the field, and we can argue about it until we're blue (or scarlet, in your case) in the face, and it won't mean a thing. If I could upvote you, I would.
I've seen a lot of your posts of late and it's nice to see varying viewpoints from the enemy. I'm a fan of logical, yet critical discussions. Any fan of an opposing team who can do that without getting all worked up and turning it in an argument full of name calling, finger pointing, etc. is okay in my book.
Dude, we all care SO much about this. I grew up with my 2 best friends being Ohio State fans. They gave me shit, sure, but I gave it right back. It was always good-natured.
We get caught up in hate (and don't get me wrong, I hate OSU), but at the end of the day, it's a great rivalry, and it's better for the rivalry when our opponents are at their best.
The one thing I will never forget, no matter how emotional I get, is that this shit is supposed to be fun.
Yes, supposed to be. Sitting in C deck, surrounded by 100k bucknuts in 28 degrees with snow flurries and 15mph wind to see your team lose by 5 freaking points because you tip your hand and run a <200lb Denard/Smith into a 8-man box 3 or 4 times in the second half. Fun? Not so much.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

on that note hail, what's the general tone of michigan fans on borges? those play calling mistakes are on him. he can say that if executed properly, they would work, but it's the OC's job to design plays to his team's strengths or his opponents weaknesses and give his team the best chance to succeed. ANY play can be a potential home-run if executed properly. doesn't mean it's wise to use with the game on the line and the clock running down. he seemed to call good games against iowa, northwestern, and in the bowl loss, but the offense sputtered big time against some competition. i think that's more of the reason mich lost the game, however much i might like to say tOSU's defense suddenly became amazing. they stepped up, but big al made their job much easier. if the decision came down to you, would you send big al packing?
I don't think that is all that laugh out loud. Gardner is a very talented kid and can do a lot of things. If you said RG3 was going to out beat Luck for the Heisman last year, people would have laughed at you. Just saying its not impossible. Between Robinson, Morris and Gardner, I would say Gardner has the best talent to do it.
Now if they said Shane Morris is a candidate as a freshman because Manziel won as a freshman, then I would fall out of my chair laughing so hard.
you make great points. but I was raised by ohio state alumni and I, myself am one as well, and I can't help it but to laugh...it's just a reflex at this point.
If he's heisman potential why didn't he start? That's the first question one would ask themselves. Its not as though Denard was a phenomenal QB who just got hurt. He was an awful QB, so while Gardner may be good why would they move him to WR if he were that great. I'll be the first to admit that Denard is a freak athlete, and playmaker, but not a QB. Gardner's good, but more of a McCarron type that plays well enough, and won't lose the game, but doesn't light the stadium up on a consistent basis.
Frankly it tells you how much of an idiot Hoke is and how his biggest flaw is sticking too close to his ideal scheme with a pro style QB. He didn't fit Hokes mold and therefore got moved, although he was the best QB on the roster. He's no Peyton Manning, but he's the best they got. Heisman, no way, but to think someone would consider him in that breath shows you that Hoke should look at how to put together the best team and now how can jam guys into molds he wants them to be. I had been saying since last year Gardner needed to start.
K well in all honesty.. I'll be the voice of reason.. I hate ttun as much as the next nut.. but.. it says heisman potential in the big 10 .. name the last time there was 2 candidates from the big ten ... I think they're just grabbing at straws in order to entice viewers..
If this year is any indicator....it's not happening TTUN fans. He just now started getting time as a starting QB last year. He in no way shape or form has what Newton had as a skill set or even TP who didn't even sniff the Heisman race. If I were you TTUN fans above...I think I'd just say...give it to Braxton or Johnny now. McCarron will be in the talk bc, well...it's Bama. Murray will be solely on numbers at GA and possibly Tosh Boyd as well (or possibly Oregon's QB too). So where exactly do you see Gardner fitting in???? Just curious about that question...bc it's obviously not one you TTUN fans above have thought of. Not to mention as STEENSN pointed out...Borges and Philosopher King run a Pro style offense. It doesn't exactly use the QB in the same way a spread offense would...which is why that article as well as reasons why he could win is an absolute joke IMO of course.

Might be plausible for a year when you don't have the defending winner Manziel, Braxton Miller, and some other very good candidates in there. I expect Gardner to have a great season, but he'll need to go apeshit to win the Heisman.
Even though everyone seems to think ESPN is out to get tOSU... they just came out with their top heisman candiates for next year... with Braxton being the top choice.
Even though everyone seems to think [insert claim here], this [insert single data point here] refutes that.
Everyone doesn't think ESPN is out to get Ohio State, and not everything they do is anti-OSU.
Oversight on their part.
I was hopeful that they'd give Carlos Hyde an honorable mention on their list, I could see him rumbling for close to 1500 yards and he's a touchdown machine
Hyde yo' trophy! El Guapo is coming....
Hyde yo' kids! Hyde yo' wife!
I don't know, Gardner's highlight video looks pretty good to me.

Denard is not his typical kind of QB. Borges struggled with Denard, and that's pretty well-documented. Gardner is much more in Borges' wheelhouse.
