Quick Bits 1/5 (One new offer, James Quick to Louisville, Mike Mitchell is a Buckeye)

  • Just received word from someone I trust that James Quick picking Louisville today is what's expected.
  • 13' QB JT Barrett officially signs with Ohio State
  • Hearing Quick to Louisville from two people now. Apparently he changed his mind last night.
  • : Norcross 2014 LB Kevin Mouhon says has offered.
  • : WR Shelton Gibson meeting with coaches tonight
  • Jacques Patrick unofficially visits Florida

Make that 14.

It’s no secret Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has an affinity for athletes from the state of Georgia. The two-time national champion proved it once again by offering 2014 outside linebacker Kevin Mouhon (Norcross, Ga./Norcross).

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Mouhon becomes the 14th junior from the Peach State to be offered by the Buckeyes and the third from Norcross. Incidentally, the other two are running back Myles Autry and defensive end Lorenzo Carter.

If Quick changed his mind as recent as last night, it doesn't matter who he picks today. That recruitment isn't anywhere near being over.

I know he was named MVP for his 2 catches but it was by default. I was not impressed he nearly dropped that blown coverage wide open TD.

I would agree with you if it was other way around. Being in celebratory Louisville for the next month as a Cardinal commit would be much easier than being a Buckeye commit. Still, the honeymoon has to end, so we'll see.

If Quick does indeed commit to Louisville, I hope Urban doesn't peruse him and go after Shelton, Timmons, or Elder. If we couldn't get Quick to commit to tOSU by now, it's over. He already knows everything he needs to know. Good luck, J Quick in your future endeavors!

Set your avi

Agree completely. While Quick is a great talent he's not a player that you do whatever (legally) it takes to get him like Diggs was. We'll be fine if we get Gibson and Elder/Wilson. Also, Quick seems like the type of player where, even if we did get him to switch, he'd still be having sdoubts and would be someone you'd hear about potentially transferring each year because he's homesick.

Iwas thinking the exact same thing weeks ago.

Set your avi
btalbert25 on 5 Jan 2013 - 11:21pm #

He'd only be 4 hours from home so I'm not so sure he'd be a transfer.  He was always going to go to UofL, it speaks to the kind of recruiters Urban and staff are that he was on the fence about it though.  It's hard to pry kids out of that city.  The staff made a nice run at him, but the writing was on the wall after the game when he was blown away by his visit and he still didn't commit then said Louisville was still on top.  If Ohio State couldn't secure his commit then, they were never going to get it.

wonder if Quick will flip to OSU on NSD... crazier things have happened...think that BCS win had him buzzing and maybe after things settle he will have a change of heart, not expecting it, but its always a possibility with Urban

JLBNYC's picture

I assume we will move on and even if he wants to flip, we might not have space by then (if we get commitments from our other targets (e.g., Wilson, Gibson)

And sometimes its called observation and perception skills. His behavior at that game including his interviews show he was all about the drama. I believe it was planned all along. But I could be wrong!  But then again I could be right!  This is a forum much about opinions and you express yours quite well. But you have the same probability of being correct as I do.

Good luck to James Quick.  Louisville is the best place for him in my opinion (hometown school, family and friends there) so hope that works out well for him.

Great pick-up for our Buckeyes with Mike Mitchell.  With the linebacking corps needing a few fresh bodies, we couldn't have done much better than he and Trey Johnson in the last 24 hours.  Go Bucks!

With all due respect, hometown or not, playing for what is usually a b-ball school (2nd tier football school) with 1/3 to 1/2 of the seats empty for many games is generally not the best place for a blue chip football player...not that he won't succeed, he'll just have much less of a chance to play for a NC title, win a Heisman etc. but to each his own.

I agree that Lousiville is a basketball school but that doesn't mean it isn't the best place for James Quick.  While we ardent OSU fans can all make a case for a recruit to be a Buckeye, the truth is that James Quick was born and raised in Lousiville, his father attended school there (not sure if he played or not), has many friends on the team, and am guessing his skills will be utilized.

As an objective college football fan, I can appreciate UL's bowl effort this week vs. Florida and their win over Rutgers to get into a BCS game and am sure you can, too.  Though not a UL fan, a Charlie Strong fan (no direspect), or a Big East fan, I will say that Teddy Bridgewater won me over with his courage in that game playing with a broken wrist and bad ankle.  I can see where UL is a very attractive place for Quick to be and hope that works out well for him.  Go Bucks!

Their stadium holds 55,000 and they averaged about 50,000 for home attendance this season so I don't think Pappa Johns Stadium is ever half empty for games. They had the highest average attendance in the Big East this year. With their success and the buzz around them now, they'll probably sell out every home game next year.

They  have one more year in the Big East too.  They have a young team and a real shot to go undefeated next year and make another BCS bowl with an outside shot at making the BCS title game.  So, I don't know, chance to play freshman year, probably 2 years with an awesome QB, and getting ready to move up to a better conference are all pluses.

Will he win a title?  Probalby not, but there's no guarrantee he'd win one at Ohio State either, and it's 200 miles from home.  The NFL will find him with no problem playing at Louisville.

But Louisville doesnt have a pro team!  Seriously though how many pro receivers from Louisville are there?  They cannot even begin to stand up to UK in that category. I can remember a Henry Douglas or something like that and a DL or two.

Set your avi
btalbert25 on 6 Jan 2013 - 12:34am #

I just get tired of reading comments like why would he go there and play in a 1/2 full stadium, or good luck winning anything great down there.  Louisville is obviously not the same caliber as Ohio State program wise, but they also aren't a black whole where Quick will just disappear and no one will ever see or hear of him again.  He'll make the NFL if he's good enough.  He'll be win a lot of ball games, and while yes Pappa John's Stadium isn't huge, it's still a nice venue and the Louisville fans are pretty awesome really.

If you combine all of that with him getting to play in his hometown, it's not a bad option. My opinion was not that he stayed in Louisville to play in front of his mom and dad, just that it's one of the many factors.

EDIT:  My list for Louisville was from 2010, they had 6 back then.  There are currently 2 UOFL WR in the NFL.  Harry Douglas and Deon Branch.  There are 3 from UK, Cobb, Tamme, and Stevie Johnson.  UofL has 21 in the NFL and UK has 15.

Thanks Gene...as it sucks OSU missed out on Quick...it opens up that spot to others like Wilson if he decommits from Oregon...or S. LaRue who is asking us to rekindle the interest.  Either one of those will do or both.

I still think you leave the door open for Quick, and continue to recruit him, right up until... Ryan Timmons takes his scholarship!  Which, IMHO, should happen pretty quickly.

I understand that Quick looked like the better prospect to the coaches as a pure WR type, but MY GOD, you don't pass up a player like Timmons, who wants to land in your lap, without terribly offending the football gods.

I'm positive he'll be worth the scholarshiip if all he ever does is return kicks for OSU.

Elder, Bell, Worley, Timmons and Gibson all visiting on the 11th.  Wonder if all of them including Worley and Bell all commit that day or soon after.  Would be great, but highly doubtful IMO.

I hate losing Quick but it doesn't bother me at all that he went to Louisville to play for Charlie Strong.  I like that guy a lot.  Staying at Louisville and not jumping at SEC glory tells me he's about a lot more than letting ego/money rule his life.

And the dude can flat coach.

Guess I better prepare for some backlash here but Im gonna call a spade a spade.  I honestly think it would be very hard for a hometown kid to watch his hometown team and how their quarterback played to turn down playing there.  Bridgewater was money all night and quite frankly does a better job than Braxton when it comes to getting his receivers the ball. He couldnt hold Braxtons jock strap in the open field but that doesnt get his receivers the ball.  I wish him luck and think its a safe choice for him considering he has the safety blanket of being at home.  Its time to go get guys that wanna don the Scarlet and Gray whether it be Elder, Timmons or Wilson.  GO BUCKS!

If I were in the position to chose which school to play for, I can say I wouldn't chose anything other than S&G (my hometown school.) Can't blame the kid, 95% of us have never been in his position, all we can do is wish him well and hope to see a gray box for his replacement soon! Go Bucks!

I just really don't ever think Quick was "ours" anyway.  There was a lot of buzz about who he favored or didn't favor in the last week, but in my opinion Ohio State always trailed. If The Game didn't push the needle in our favor, nothing was going to.

OSUBias's picture
OSUBias on 5 Jan 2013 - 7:28pm #

Could be. None of us really know, but the whole time when we were thinking about why he would choose Louisville over OSU, everyone kept emphasizing our likelihood at playing for Nat Champs and the quality of our program vs. theirs. Well, I think under Strong they are closer than they've been since Petrino at being a top notch program. It's more than Bridgewater; it took a team to kick Florida's ass like that. So I don't blame him at all for the move to stay home and possibly win your hometown a NC. They don't seem to be as far off as we'd like to think. He probably has hope he can help put them over the top.

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

It's funny how relatively unbothered people are by Quick not signing and Diggs last year.  If Tressel were still the coach people would be flipping out missing out on these big name recruits.  WHY CAN"T COACH CLOSE!!!!!!!  Funny how perceptions change when a different coach is at the helm.

Set your avi

I think the difference between the reaction to Quick's decision versus Diggs' decision is that Louisville  is a hometown team on the way up, alumni dad and attending sister, a dynamic coach that is respected and liked, and a great QB. Maryland was/is a dumpster fire with a coach who is not a fan or alumni favorite, to say the least, and lots of attrition on the team, including QB. And that was before this year, when the Maryland angry quarterback hating god struck down what, 4 qbs?

i remember the feeling I had when we lost Lewis Neal and Anzalone, and from that loss we actually improved (maybe drastically) with Johnson and Mitchell... I think the same may happen here... although Quick is a fantastic talent and will likely do great things at UL, I also feel that if we land Wilson and any of the others, wed have one of the better WR groups in the country with Marshall, Wilson, Gibson/Elder/etc....really excited to see Marshall develop, sky is the limit for that kid.
