Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 1/11

National Signing Day is rapidly approaching, and Ohio State is giving its best effort to land the athletes needed to compete at the highest levels of college football. The staff is targeting a few key athletes, but the class of 2014 has too much talent to be procrastinated on too.

Head coach Urban Meyer has a plan for the Buckeyes, but it's no secret to anyone what that plan has in store for Ohio State in 2013 and beyond: Building a championship contender, year in, year out. If anyone watched the National Championship game this year, you could easily tell what Coach Meyer was thinking. If the Buckeyes are going to win championships, they have to recruit better, execute better and finish the job.

I can't think of a better way to do that than by getting the best high school players in the country to commit to your school. For Coach Meyer, recruiting is not only a necessity, but a priority to win. From day one of his hiring, Coach Meyer has said that he needs to find playmakers. Whether they're on the team already, or are in future classes, he needs them on the field to perform. So what kind of talent is Meyer targeting?

SB Nation's Patrick Vint did a superb job covering a few of the top athletes in the class of 2013 for Ohio State, where he talked about Coach Meyer's impact on '13 QB JT Barrett and '13 ATH Jalin Marshall:

J.T. Barrett: The Urban Meyer spread offense was built for dual-threat quarterbacks, and the best of them -- Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller -- thrive in Meyer's run-heavy system. Barrett, a quarterback from Wichita Falls, Texas, fits the bill. Barrett chose Ohio State over offers from LSU, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Baylor, and Texas Tech. Rivals rates him the ninth-best dual-threat quarterback in the country.

Jalin Marshall: Jim Tressel built an empire in Columbus by cherry-picking Ohio of its finest talent. Meyer is picking up where Tressel left off with Jalin Marshall, a wide receiver from Middletown. Marshall received five stars from Scout, and is rated the second-best player in Ohio by Rivals (behind OSU commit Cameron Burrows). Marshall held offers from Notre Dame, UCLA and much of the Big Ten, but has been an OSU commit since January 2012.

Speaking of Marshall, Middletown's basketball team is suffering without the excellent talents of the senior. Marshall reported that he suffered a separated shoulder in the Under Armour game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Finally, '14 OL Roderick Johnson has received an offer from Ohio State. Coach Meyer and his staff would really like to sign a couple of offensive tackles in the class of 2014, so it's only good news for Johnson. The 6'7" and 310-pound Johnson is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings. He is the country's No. 9 OT and the No. 2 prospect in Missouri. Johnson is also holding offers from Texas A&M, Michigan State, Michigan, Missouri and Iowa. Expect even more interest in Johnson to pick up as the year rolls on.

Ohio State football: Worley joins 2013 recruiting class

Versatile defensive player Christopher Worley of Cleveland (Glenville) became the 22nd member of Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class when he committed during his official visit today.

Though Worley could not be reach for comment, his high school coach Ted Ginn Sr. confirmed the commitment for The Dispatch, saying “That’s what he intended to do once he got there.”

Worley, 6 feet 2, 195 pounds, could play strong safety at OSU, but he also could grow into outside linebacker size before he’s done, Ginn said.

“They are getting a quality guy and a very intelligent athlete,” Ginn said. “He is a guy who will come in and contribute, and understand the philosophy of Ohio State.”

Urban Meyer: OSU has work to do

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An up-close view of the title game convinced Urban Meyer that the most fundamentally sound team he saw all season won the national championship, even though his team was the nation's only unbeaten squad.

Repeated viewings of the sole game Alabama lost all season also gave the Ohio State coach a better gauge of where the Buckeyes are and where they have to go.

Armed with both sets of information, he and the Buckeyes went back to work earlier this week trying to close the gap with the SEC, which has won seven consecutive BCS national titles -- and a team that has captured three of the past four.

"[Texas] A&M beat them, Georgia could have beat them, LSU could have beat them and they soundly won the national championship," Meyer said Friday during a news conference. "That tells you a little bit about that conference. Where are we? I don't like to deal in speculation, but I think we're a very good team that can compete with any team in the country. I said even after the last game, that's where I believe we are.

"But to say we could roll in there and beat a team like that, first of all I don't want to speculate, and then if I was going to give you a honest answer, I think right now we have too many holes to fill."

Thank you as always, Gene! Great news on Worley. That's definitely an important pipeline to keep open.

This sucks. I have kept quiet about Timmons for the past 6 months but always hoped he would find a way onto the Buckeyes roster. Good luck to Ryan where ever he ends up.

Wow I just poste another place I hope he doesnt waste an OV without an offer especially with Fla now expressing high interest. But Im like you Gene he should go to UK.

SpoonerBuck33 on 11 Jan 2013 - 9:06pm #

Agree he should go to UK they are in desperate need for playmakers and a place where he should see the field alot sooner than here or at UF wish the kid the best. Look at it this way gives me a reason to actually watch UK football. Waycracken it should be fun for you to follow his college career close by as well I can picture him having a Randall Cobb like career (surprised no one hasnt made that comparison yet).

b_pbucksfans's picture
b_pbucksfans on 11 Jan 2013 - 10:30pm #

Does he have a offer from Florida? I don't believe he does. Why would he waste a OV on a school who just recently showed interest with no offer (UF) instead of a school who has been recruiting him for months with no offer(OSU)? Why would Ryan cancel when he loves OSU and wants to be here unless the staff told him there was zero chance of him receiving a offer. I know you wanted Timmons to get a offer @Way but it seems like your inside info might be frustrated and telling stories....

Everything you say makes sense but on UK site (kysportsradio) there is supposedly a tweet made nearly a week old saying he was thinking about cancelling. He's a smart kid with big dreams. It came up short for him with OSU.

This sucks Way....looks like Corey Smith and Gibson must be in.  That would make 4 or 5 WRs (Smith or Gibson or both, Marshall, Jacobs and Conley depending on where they him to play and from what I'm hearing it's both sides for Conley).  Still sucks...I was with you Way....believe Timmons will be pretty good where ever he ends up.

Did Timmons cancel or did OSU cancel? If OSU cancelled, then I think Gibson is a lock.

Set your avi

The kid can say he cancelled, but the University won't say they cancelled unless they are classless, so we will likely never KNOW, but will likely be able to guess what happened after this weekend

sox33osu's picture

Not only that, but there may be something to this Corey Smith visit, too. That or Corn Elder is also in the bag.

Set your avi
SpoonerBuck33 on 11 Jan 2013 - 9:11pm #

Smith might be more of a lock at this point than Gibson. Ill be the first to admit I have not been sold on Smith till his recent tape where it shows he has gotten better by leaps and bounds. Of course with recruiting and this staff expect the unexpected this time of year so wouldnt shock me to see Gibson commit. Still by in large a guessing game at this point.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but do you have a personal relationship with this kid? You have posted a lot of info on this kid, which admittedly made me a fan, and I am just wondering how you would know what Urban or other members of the coaching staff were saying to him today. Not doubting you, just curious as to how you know. By the way I really did enjoy your posts about Timmons this season, too bad he's not going to be in the scarlet and grey.

The way I knew was he was at BB game last night and came over to his coach who I was sitting near and showed him the text. Him and OSU coaches apparently still highly respect each other even though he will most likely not be a Buckeye, but apparently there is still a remote chance.

As far as the downvotes go. I do not care. I dont give them out but you can easily guess the ones who do.

Im at the BB game tonite. Timmons cancelled because he has use 3 OVs alread and a UK gets 1 so Fla may now get the 5th one unless he ends up at OSU tomorrow. I doubt if OSU would be that low to cancel him in the 11th hour.

Rivals is reporting it looks like OSU tried to cancell but "leave the option of rescheduling out there"

And the Corey Smith visit just happened to be added right before Timmons visit was "cancelled"

kareemabduljacobb's picture
kareemabduljacobb on 12 Jan 2013 - 10:59am #

I'm pretty sure OSU cancelled his Official visit, now with 22 scholarships and only 2-3 left with a bunch of potential candiates that are 1. Better and 2. Have an Offer.  I think they feel comfortable with how the class is gonna finish out and no need to waste $$ for the at best, insurance policy imo that would likely not recieve an offer before the class fills up.

Set your avi

osu texted him to change his mind? or osu cancelled his visit? or lets see, "i am at the bb game tonite and he has used 3 ovs and wants to save one for uk, but he may end up at osu tomorrow? or rivals is reporting osu tried to cancel, but leave open the option of rescheduling later? boy i am even more confused. maybe there is another story out there some where or can some one just basically say osu cancelled or, timmons cancelled? what is it going to be? it shouldnt be that hard to say.

Rivals says it looks like (they haven't been able to reach Timmons yet) OSU cancelled from what they are hearing right now.  However, it appears OSU tried to "let's leave the option open to reschedule him" as so many schools do to back-up plans so often.

It's not that hard: OSU cancelled his visit because he isn't as good as the other options which they feel good about getting. That's what it boils down to, errbody needs to stop sugarcoating it.

Devin Hall was on the Purdue football team as a walkon RB the last two seasons, redshirted in 2011. He enrolled this week and will be a walkon. He played LB in high school. Also played with Jared Sullinger. He is from Columbus so this move makes sense.

Timmons is over, we gotta move on guys like we gotta move on from James Quick. Doesn't really matter who cancelled. Like I said about 6 months or so ago, he wasn't going to be in this class.

Staff must be feeling good about Elder, and one or both of Gibson and Smith.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 11 Jan 2013 - 11:00pm #

I agree w/you in the sense that I don't think it's important who cancelled. He's a 17/18 year old kid, there's no need for us to establish that the school did/did not cancel on him. Just let him move on to bigger and brighter things!

I'm personally excited about the possibility of Smith/Gibson/Elder. I still feel like Elder is SUPER underrated by most here. His running style reminded me a lot of Reggie Bush's gallop, and Elder has dynamite track speed. Never gets run down from behind when he hits a hole.

Not to confuse things but 247 continues to say D.Wilson will still be visiting as well.  He had talked of looking around after UA game, but didnt want decommitment talk to deter from the game.

With a normal number of schollies Timmons would probably be in this class... He is a good player, but the staff has other priorities.  Best of luck to him wherever he goes.  Now please give me a gray box on Gibson and Smith!!!!

who cares who cancelled the visit? Kid isnt going to be a buckeye as of right now and best of luck to him wherever he goes, Worley is a great snag and heres to hoping we get a couple more studs (BELL!)... Timmons is a great talent but i trust Meyer and his moves and if this guy didnt get his offer, theres a good reason... lets finally let this go.

Crimson's picture
Crimson on 12 Jan 2013 - 12:00am #

Yes, Timmons had long odds, but here's a plausible story from what I've gathered:

Timmons (or maybe the staff) has said that if he didn't get an offer by the time he took an official to tOSU, then he would stop looking at OSU and move on.  He's always been the backup plan, but if he took a visit this weekend and they needed to wait on others, then Timmons is out and not coming back.  Therefore, OSU calls Timmons to try to get him to come in a few weeks instead, preserving his status as a backup.

However, Timmons is clearly not an a, b, or maybe even c choice with Smith showing up.  It seems somewhat needless to push Timmons' visit back if there's almost no chance of offering him.  The only benefit for Timmons would be that if he waits and doesn't take an official, then he has one for another team when OSU is full.

Just me making some educated guesses for if the staff cancelled the visit, but guesses none the less.

By the way, the State Secrets article mentioned Roderick Johnson getting an offer, which is WAAAY late, cuz he was offered back in November, just to clarify on that matter.
