O line info

Not to go all "James Quick" on the offensive line, (sorry if we have a million threads already) but what's the latest with the offensive line recruiting for this year? Keep hearing different names popping up and then getting squashed...

Not a lot of big named targets out there we have a real shot for.  There are always those surprises that come up, but if there is a weakness in this class, that would be it.

From a pure offensive line standpoint, this is true, but Urban has a history of moving players around and several of the DL recruits taken this year and last have experience/potential on the offensive line.  Recruiting has been a bit thin at OL, but the depth is not quite in the realm of dire.  Not yet, at any rate.

I just heard names like Dan skipper and Cameron hunt. Then Kenny Lacy dropped off the map quite quick. Just wondering the back story..

There's the possibility Munger may move over to OL. They want him for DL, but he could play at a high level on the offensive front for sure.

Seems to me the staff really wants to take one more olinemen. They keep sending offers out, I saw earlier that the staff just offered Roderick Johnson an OT and Florida commit. I wonder if this tips the staffs hand about potential OLine transfers that have been rumored   ?

Yeah Skipper/Hunt are the guys (as my article at 130 today will point out), but Munger and/or Price can play OL down the road potentially

Sweet. I just provided a tease for the staff!

Thanks for the information, in advance!

I think the staff may have to look seriously at moving both Billy Price and Donovan Munger to the offensive side of the ball.  Previously I thought only moving one would be necessary, but with the way the staff seems to continue going after pipe-dream recruits toward the end of this recruiting cycle, it makes me believe they still need more numbers on the O-line.

From everything I hear, Price and Munger are very good d-line prospects.  However, after watching the way Alabama's offensive line just manhandled ND's d-line and linebackers, I can't help but think getting more lean, mean offensive lineman machines (with a nasty streak) will do nothing but exponentially increase the Urban Meyer-power spread's efficiency.

Given the numbers, it is almost impossible to believe that both Munger and Price will play D at OSU.  They'll battle it out, and at least one ends up playing OL.

From what I have gathered, the coaches plan to lean heavily on the 2012 OL haul and the 2014 haul.

As of today, OSU has recruited 7 OL total in the '12 and '13 classes.  One of those guys, most likely Decker, will have to start in '13.  In '14, we will lose 4/5 of our OL, so from those 6 remaining recruits, 4 will need to become starters.  That is a very thin margin of error, and it is dangerous to count on freshmen OL to come in and start on a team we hope to be making a NC run that season.  I doubt Urban is willing to risk taking that chance which is why I expect one of the following to happen: adding another OL to this recruiting class, switching either Munger or Price to OL immediately in Fall camp. or a JUCO transfer next year.  Our team should be a machine in '14, but the issue of the OL must be addressed.

I think whoever plays on the O-Line will be great even if they are switched from D-line or are a 2-3 star recruit because of Ed Warinner.  He is a way better coach than the walrus.

I'm sure they would like to get one more OLineman but I don't think it is a dire situation and next year will be the year to get some talent.

2013 starting line will have 4 returning starters with Mewhort, Hall, Linsley and Norwell. Already have a part time starter in Taylor Decker when they rested Fragel.

backing them up are top talents (better than what can be found out there now) in Kyle Dodson, Joey O'connor, Pay Elflein and Jacoby Boren (who might have started if Linsley didn't play at an all-B1G level most of the year).

coming in this year, Lisle and Tim Gardner, will be some good depth.

If it works out that Munger and Price will be more competitive on the Oline, fine, but I think the Oline has some talent and depth ready to roll for the next 2 years. by that time we will be welcoming in Marcelys Jones and Co. which I believe WILL be a stellar OL class. Actually might be better to bank the schollie till next year since it will be a stronger class.

Squirrel,

While I won't argue that it looks good on paper, but injuries are likely. What you show, we can't miss on any of these recruits. We're thin..

I wouldn't want to reach on an offer either, but picking another lineman seems pretty important for '14, IMHO..

The question I have for the staff here is, Kyle Meadows. Has that ship sailed and is he not worth an offer if not?

Squirrel Master's picture

Sounds like Meadows is actually looking at Louisville and I think Skipper/Hunt are rated higher, not sure though.

I don't think this team can hold to many schollies for Olineman. Already have at least 14 under scholarship (don't forget still have Darryl Baldwin, Tommy Brown and others) with walk ons. If this team can't field a decent line with 14 scholarship players, then it wasn't meant to be.

much like the Philly Eagles, you lose 3-4 starters on the Oline, you are screwed no matter what you have.

Plus, Kyle Meadows, Munger or Price and whoever else might be a possibility, will not be guys I would breath a sigh of relief over. If this team needs those players to step up, then there are bigger issues going on.

At some point you just gotta hope the starters, backups and 3rd stringers will be sufficient. 4th string, we are talking practice squad.

I was thinking one more scholly for this year, possibly. I agree on not reaching.

The O-line is still pretty stout from last year, I look to the staff to start really building it next year.

Dodson or Lisle and Decker could be our future OTs with Badlwin added for depth

with O'Conner, Elfein, Gardner, Munger, Farris, Brown and Underwood (if both stay on) are the future at OGs

The one position that worries me is C  We have Jacoby Boren who i think will start then for depth I am not sure?

I was thinking maybe O'Conner but I am not sure who the staff had been working at C other than Boren.  O'Conner may have to stay at OG I think this kid will be a good one someday.

I think this group is better than what OSU has had in the past for depth, especially at OT,

Next year Mehwort and Norwell will probably be LT and LG with Boren at C, Decker at RT and Norwell at RG?  Or could Norwell move to RT?

Anyway next year the depth should be good IMO except at C where I am not sure who is backing up Boren.

The year after you would have a battle at LT with Decker and Dodson, Lisle, or Baldwin he could end up being a good OT?

Next year's Oline could be better than this year's Oline especially if Boren progresses well.

As in next year, you mean '13 or '14?  Norwell, Mewhort, Linsley, and Hall finished this season as juniors and have 1 year of eligibility remaining, thus '13 is their last season.  So Boren does not figure to be a starter next season.  Decker appears to have the first crack at the RT spot.  At this point, Decker and other candidates would have to be a major disappointment for the staff reshuffle around the line and not earn the starting spot.

Anyways I had heard that Dodson may move to Center.

My guess is that the '14 OL will feature Lisle and Decker as tackles with O'Conner as a guard with Boren, Eflein, and others working in as interior linemen.

Meyer always gets the five best linemen out on the field and is not afraid to move guys around.  Just like we saw last year with Norwell moving to guard and Mewhort moving out to LT as well as Linsley moving to center.  I cannot see the staff reshuffling again when the unit played very well.
