Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.
Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.
The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.

I don't know that we can call this a fact just yet. Let's wait a bit before crucifying the guy.
That's kind of the viewpoint I'm taking right now, but Deadspin is usually correct and I doubt they would publish a story like this without being very sure of themselves
They're pretty solid when it comes to these kinds of big investigations, like the one they did about that Sarah Phillips scammer. The evidence this woman does not and never did exist seems airtight.
The story might even be a possible explanation for Te'o's lousy national championship game, since you have to assume Deadspin didn't just pull all this reporting together in the last 10 days, and had to have reached out for a comment from him at some point. If a major media outlet is nosing around your life, it gets back to you.
I have a suspicion about what's going on here below the surface, but it isn't the sort of thing I'd want to speculate on publicly.

I'm just saying...how do we even know its true at this point? In this day and age its easy to make something a conspiracy if you try hard enough. Heck, some ppl are claiming the the recent school shooting is really a sham(which infuriates me).

I was just about to edit my comments. I am now on board with the rage. I just read the statement that ND released.
Although I will say this(and I am NOT defending him anymore until he proves otherwise)....this kind of thing is a lot more common than you might think(internet dating from a distance). There is even a TV show and movie about this.
If you're referring to Catfish, there's a great many questions regarding that movie's authenticity (not sure of the tv show). Morgan Spurlock saw it at a festival and called it the greatest fake documentary ever made. The brothers who made the film have been less than forthcoming about its authenticity.
Yea, thats what I was referring to, though I agree the authenticity is suspicious. This does happen though...I know someone who it happened to(though not nearly to this degree).
Right but these two people supposedly saw each other in real life\met each other so if that was said and isn't true, that has to mean the guy knew this entire thing was a farce and had no problem with the ice cream the hype machine turned out as a result of his play, his grandma's death, and his 'girlfriend's' death. That's where it falls short for me.

The only flaw in Manti's innocence story (i.e. he was duped) is that he clearly had made public reference to meeting her in person after the 2009 Stanford game in Palo Alto. Had he only known her online, he might have had a chance to play up innocence; but that report's pretty damning. Only way around it is to say that he lied about ever seeing her in person because he didn't want to publicly admit to being in love with a woman that he'd never seen.

I honestly believe that without this fake dead girlfriend story (compounded with his grandmother's death, which got WAY less play in the media), Te'o is not a Heisman finalist and does not win all the major awards in college football this year.
Numbers don't lie brother. Shazier, Jarvis Jones, and Clowney all had pretty damned impactfull years. That's been my bone since the outset-the guy made tackles, not an impact when you compare what those other guys did.

Considering Deadspin was the only one to do actual research into this girl whereas ABC, ESPN, and many other major netwroks did not I will believe Deadspin's story over anyone elses. I have no problem saying he is a piece of crap at this point...its a forum I'm commenting on, not an OpEd piece
