James Clark and Shelton Gibson

It now looks like Ohio State is now going after 4 star WR James Clark out of Florida. Not sure if this means Shelton Gibson will not be in this class due to grades or if Urban is reaching out to another WR just to cover his basis.

I was kind of wondering if we didn't get Bell, if Urban would go after an extra wide reciever?

Looks like he's already taken 5 OVs. Maybe UFM has something up his sleeve but is this really the best fallback without Gibson? Are we still on on Corn?

The guy's highlight reel is "borderline ridiculous", as Urban would say. Has amazing speed; he is Mr.YAC. I wish we could have joined the race for Mr. Clark earlier.

I love the highlight tape as well.  If that's the only judgement, then I wish we would have offered him long ago.  At this point, I assume he's just a backup option though.

He doesn't have a listed offer as of yet...if so...link please?  We have Smith and Gibson on campus at the moment....not sure why they'd go public with interest for another wide out now???

*Edit:  I saw it on 247....it looks like Hinton called him...no visit or offer yet.  Probably depends on what's going on with Gibson.  I just wish Smith would flip....he's pretty good and has experience to contribute right away.

Agree on Smith. he dominated in community college, and you can be sure that the competition there was quite a bit better than what he played in APS.

I'll echo the above sentiments when I say I think Clark's tape is better than Gibson's. That said, Gibson has gotten a lot of praise and recognition from experts over the past year.

According to 247sports, he has OV to Norwestern and Nebraska so far with planned visits to Clemson and Florida. So those plans could easily be changed. Don't see the 5th OV though anyone know where that one was/is?

Edit: 5th OV was to Purdue.  SO Purdue, Northwester, Nebraska.  With Clemson/Florida planned in the next few weeks.

Now I am one that hates the comp level argument. But this tape is proof not all Fla schools are any better than Ky schools. One indicator I look for in tapes for speed is the referees. Look at this tape again and you will see old referees out running the defense in 3/4s of the game film. A few of them are hilariously bad.

Clark does look good though.

kareemabduljacobb's picture
kareemabduljacobb on 13 Jan 2013 - 2:18pm #

That's true his competition level isn't very good like Timmons, but unlike Timmons who's best offer is what... Kentucky, Arkansas or Purdue... Clark has offers from Aub, Clem, Fla, Neb, GTech, Miami (fl), Notre Dame, PSU, Tenn, WVU and so on.   And this dude is fastttt.  Sign him up... Although, it may be too late in his recruiting process??

Kareem Im just saying the referees are out running the defense and several refs are running with a limp. Look at the film Ky football is better than the teams in this film.

kareemabduljacobb's picture
kareemabduljacobb on 13 Jan 2013 - 2:32pm #

Yeah I wasn't really impressed with either competition level, and I don't really like the highlights of Timmons, the camera angles just don't do it for me.  But I'm not saying Timmons isn't a good football player or anything, but looking at their offer lists it seems a lot more teams and coaches prefer Clark even though he isn't rated as high in the recruiting databases... plus, given the Buckeyes history with them Florida boys coming up North... I'll take a FLA HS player any day regardless of competition level!

Oakland Buckeye's picture

Love your posting & spirit Crack, but ref speed is not a benchmark or litmus test. I think the offers list is more reliable, and will take FL football recruits any day.

This could be used by the coaching staff as a way to let guys know to either get on the bus or it's leaving the station as well. Gibson dragging his feet for awhile now may be sending mixed signals.

Yea, I would say this info becoming public right now is probably to let the WRs who have committable offers to at least tell the staff what they are doing even if they want to wait until signing day to have their big moment on TV or whatever...OSU cannot afford to wait on these WR's until signing day due to the fact that they cannot miss on getting at least 1 more playmaker type player to fill up a class that is already reaching a scholorship crunch.  Essentially Crap or get off the pot.  They may not be able to give Smith, Elder, or Clark the go ahead to commit until they get a definitive answer from Gibson (if he is their primary target).

Anyone know offhand (too lazy myself to do the research) what scouts had Percy Harvin/Rainey/Urbz other playmakers ranked at coming out of HS? Interested to see if they were just prime recruits or if Urbz just took advantage of putting them in his system. It seems OSU has had some "solid" WR over the past couple years, but since Ginn OSU really hasn't had a world beater at WR.

Either way, I'm really excited to see this team in a few years. Especially if they finish out this class with a few more studs.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

I like all the back and forth and I think backing Timmons by Waycraken and others has been fun, but if you are seriously asking why we wouldn't offer the kid, I'd tell you that it's because we don't have a need for him and we are up against a numbers crunch.  By all accounts Jacobs plays the same position + we have Marshall and Elliott.

The other posters are not the folks who made the decision not to offer Timmins, it was the coaching staff.  I'm sure that the kid is great, but at this point, I am hoping that the staff was right and that Jacobs and Marshall blow up.

After today I will get over the fact that my Buckeyes are going a different direction but it is tough to watch the direction. Fortunately for us very few freshmen get an opportunity and I am sure that trend will continue. Corn Elder in my opinion is the 2nd best prospect we have (next to Marshall) that could contribute next year (talking about RBs and WRs).

buck-I.8's picture

No offense, but every time you guys have these discussions about how large the downvote problem is, you're making it worse. Most posts get downvoted but still have more up than down, which basically works out to deal with the inherency of the trolls. By making it an issue that you gripe about constantly, you're just giving said trolls the upper hand, because that's their intent.

Set your avi
UrbzRenewal on 13 Jan 2013 - 8:35pm #

If you ignore it, they will go away. By bringing it up constantly, you deviate/go off on a tangent from the topic and thus non-trolls will downvote you due to content. It's just a compounding problem. The first rule of downvotes is not to complain about downvotes.

HOLY SHITE! How does a player like Clark fly so far under the radar?  That kid is better than Quick.  And I don't care what the competition level is.

That's pretty close to Ted Ginn speed and acceleration.  He's got that ability to stop on a dime, jump back a few yards and be off at full speed in a step or two.

I think this may be a matter of the staff just now getting wind of him and checking out his tapes.  With any luck, maybe he wanted to be recruited by OSU and made contact or had a coach make contact.

Set your avi

Faster than Quick, but I wouldn't say better. Quick has dominated some of the best competition out there. I would, however, still love to get this kid if Gibson is not part of this class. He looks better, to me, than Elder and Timmons. He looks similar to Gibson, but slightly faster.

“I’m still at the point where I’m not ready to pick a favorite yet,” said Clark, who has also visited Purdue and Northwestern and has already crossed Purdue off his list. “I still have two visits left and  anything can happen in next couple weeks.”

That was the case Sunday morning. Clark (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) received a surprising phone call from Ohio State assistant coach Tim Hinton, who then handed the phone to Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer.

“He said they wanted to know if I was interested or if they’d be wasting their time recruiting me,” Clark said of his conversation with Hinton and Meyer. “I told them, ‘Yes, I’m definitely  interested.’

“It went well. It’s definitely something to think  about over the next couple of days.”

So Clark has a decision to make this week and it sounded like he’s probably going to end up in Columbus, Ohio, on official visit No. 4 on Friday instead of Clemson.

His name is Taylor Jones. He is a sophomore. He is small (probably 5'10), so he will need to grow a few inches in the next couple years. We will see how good he is next year, when he doesn't have Gibson and Laster to throw to. It was hard to judge him this past year because Gibson and Laster were so good and almost always getting open or drawing most of the defense to them, which gave Jones a lot of time and space. I don't see him as a B1G QB unless he grows a couple inches and shows a lot of development, but we will see.

Crimson's picture

There's two options with Gibson.  One is grades/test scores, which I don't buy.  It seems to have shifted to Gibson is weighing tOSU and WV, and even though he loves tOSU, he sees potential to play early and, possibly, in a better system for WR at WV.  Whatever he chooses (or has chosen), the staff at least needs to have backup options, which seem to be at WR rather than H/slot.

Gibson's recruitment seemed off to me since the beginning, and I don't think this is a clear case of test scores or academic issues. I don't know him and will not make personal judgements about him, but there seemed to be something he wanted out of this experience, maybe a point he was trying to make, that never seemed to add up for the Buckeyes.
