I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine (Colts fan) who said something about wishing they had Peyton for this playoff push. While Luck has been good this year, it makes perfect sense to want Manning.
However, it got me thinking, if I could choose one former player to be on the Buckeyes roster, who would I choose?
For me it came down to Mike Doss or Ted Ginn, with Ginn winning out because I want to see how Meyer/Herman would be able to use that speed in Columbus...
So if you could choose ONE former player to be backon the roster for the 2013 season, who would you choose?

It's hard to choose just one player so I'll go with Troy Smith, Joey Galloway or Ted Ginn...
Ted Gone.
Que the nas and nitro boosters at :20 mark.
GALLOWAY, or AJ Hawk.
My picks exactly
Keith Alan Byars
In 1984, Byars finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting (behind Doug Flutie) after a season where he gained an OSU record 2,441 all-purpose yards, including a then-school record 1,764 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns
Orlando Pace. I would love for Orlando's House of Pancakes to be reopened. While other players mentioned were very good, none of them in my mind were as domiate at their postions as Orlando was at his.
No one dominated like Pace. I would love to see him dominate today's players, like Clowney.
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
My vote as well.
One of the few players I that I would ever feel comfortable using the G.O.A.T. acronym. But He deserves every bit of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys8g-G3gBBQ
“Right now, Michigan is not at the pinnacle of college football, and that’s all Urban Meyer cares about...He’s been there and knows what it takes to get there.”
Could you imagine an O-line with Korey Stringer AND Orlando Pace playing? You could put a punter in at running back and he'd succeed!
Exactly!!
Excerpt from his wikipedia page:
Dude was an absolute BEAST!
“Right now, Michigan is not at the pinnacle of college football, and that’s all Urban Meyer cares about...He’s been there and knows what it takes to get there.”
Pace and Stringer did play together. My head coach was an All-B1G DE at M!chigan and had the pleasure of going against both in a double-tackle set. He said he had never had his ass kicked so badly in his collegiate or pro career.
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
You are correct! They did play together for a year I think.
I remember Pace's first game and the annoucers were show his shoe size and how bing he was! They kept talking about how he would be one of the best and he was!
Pace was a freshman while Stringer was a senior. Cooper would use the double-tackle set on the left side with both to overwhelm defenses.
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
Ithink he was making a joke in reference to an earlier post by osu4life/osubuckeye2002 talking about how important the punter was to a title run

The greatest Buckeye ever...Archie.
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
Thank you, RBUCK. I was having trouble believing he hadn't been mentioned yet. I grew up watching him. What a player. On defense? Maybe Speilman.
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx
Just one? Troy Smith his senior year.
Two? Add Orlando Pace.
David Boston terry Glenn Joey Galloway. We need a big time receiver that catches everything. Old time players, cris carter and would like to see Archie griffin in urbans spread offense.
Purple Raider
Pryor in Urbans offense... Oh my... That would be fun to watch, but I am choosing Teddy Ginn Jr.
Well given the current roster I would probably go for a LB like Katz, Hawk, or Laurinaitis. Maybe a bigtime WR like Ginn, Holmes, Galloway, Glenn, Carter....... now I get Zach Smith and Tom Herman's point.
If picking a LB, I would go with Spielman
Maurice Clarett, without all the drama. Just based on the talent he showed his freshman season.
Jim Tressel vs. Rich Rod = Urban Meyer vs. Brady Hoke
Malcolm Jenkins, then we would truly have a no fly zone with him and Roby!
If you're gonna take a corner I may go with Antoine Winfield
Andy Katzenmoyer. Seems like we need a MLB more than we need anything.
If we didn't have Miller, I'd say Pryor. Would be interesting to see a 6'5 240 pound monster that runs a 4.36 running Urbs spread O.
He said he would put up better numbers than Scam Newton so would like to see that.
Chris Gamble....he was a defensive stalwart but I feel like he would've been a great spread offense player too.
Champions Bleed Scarlet & Gray
Agreed. Having Gamble would shore up our receivers and give us a lock-down DB.
John Simon
O Pace.
I like the Katzenmoyer posts, but would probably want Cousineau who was a speed guy during a time when the defense was not dominant.
The biggest improvement in 2012 was the defense when Zach Boren took over at MLB. For 2013 I would pick a stud MLB to anchor the D in the Big Ten. So I'd say Spielman or Katzenmoyer to lead the D.
Offense- Ted Ginn Jr. in this offense? SICK!
Defense- Any great middle linebacker in OSU history (it's the one thing we need).
Antoine Winfield all day.
"Winning takes care of everything. - Woody Hayes"
Mike Doss por favor.
Robert Smith
he looked slow but no one ever caught him
I'm a friend of thunder is it any wonder lightning strikes me
First name that came to mind was Spielman, but Orlando Pace would be a good one too.
How about arguably the greatest player in college football in the 90's? Eddie George? He has my vote.
Just a life long Buckeye fan wanting to talk to other lifelong Buckeye fans. Our honor defend, we will fight to the end for OOO HIIII OOOOOO!
Gradishar/Cousineau/Spielman - pick'em
I'd love to see what Urban would do with Eddie George as his every-down RB.
Only to offer a different choice than those fine choices previously posted, Will Smith or even Vernon Gholston. I think the incoming Freshman along with some of our existing play makers will be suffice. a lot of linebackers mentioned above so I went a different route. We lost ALL of our defensive linemen so I went that route.
I'm completely in agreement with those that say Pace. I feel like we have plenty of weapons on O for Braxton to use, but without a great line they are worthless. He's my choice.
Close second is Clarett. In terms of pure talent, he may have been the best RB we've ever had at OSU, including Archie, Eddie, Beanie, etc. There was something about that kid that was special that you see once or twice in a generation.
Having Orlando Pace to fill in for the only departing o-lineman would be insane, but I think this team needs a leader at linebacker more than anything. I would take Spielman or Laurinaitis. Both would be quarterback of the defense and provide leadership that will be needed with the losses of Simon, Boren and Williams.
I was a big David Boston fan. Big wide reciever who could move.
Some great players on the list above, but the OP asked about adding a player to the 2013 roster, and the most pressing need for '13 is LB. For that reason, as much as I'd love to have Pace, Ginn, Clarett etc on the team, for '13 I'd go with . . . ah, screw it. Gimme Teddy!!!!
JB Shugarts. I want to see the all-time fall start record broken
Win
In my lifetime? Doss/ Ginn/ Red Kryptonite/ Eddie/ AJ/ Big Kat
All time? Archie/ Tatum
Just one? Doss
"Don't put syrup on shit, and tell me it's pancakes"
No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
drawing a blank on Red Kryptonite. Who is that?
Troy Smith; supposedly named by a bunch of scUM fans.
"Don't put syrup on shit, and tell me it's pancakes"
No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
Alex Anzalone
Love the reference...
If one? Pryor.
Two? Ginn.
Three? Beanie.
Could you imagine this offense with these 3?
*drools*
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
with the team need being what it is id go with little animal... but if i could just choose one player it would have to be the pancake machine... never in my life have i seen a man dominate like that
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Spielman.
Help is on the way.
It would be a linebacker, but no idea how to choose between the great ones. I guess this guy...
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
This picture reminds me of the old style astro-turf. Man that stuff sucked. it was like playing on a parking lot when cold.
Easy, offense isn't our issue, defense is. Therefore it's the top former LB we've ever had.
Its between Katzenmoyer and Ginn but I'll take Katz any day...
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
Spielman on Defense....Beanie Wells on Offense
SCOTTC.
I would most certainly take one of the elite LBs. Spielman, probably.
Malcolm Jenkins . Kurt Colman . Ted Ginn . James Laurinitas . Aj Hawk . Vernon Gholston . I could literally go on for days . I can't pick just one lol
Buckeye_For_Life
I might be out on a limb a little bit but I would have to say Chris Gamble. Unbelievable athelete and I would love to see how he would be used under UFM. Add another lock down corner to play along side Roby and an absolute playmaker on offense. #nasty
I would really like to see some of the receivers we have had in this type of offense. I would like to see Cris Carter, Joey Galloway, Terry Glen, and Ted Ginn in Urban's spread offense.
Either Malcolm Jenkins or Antoine Winfield. We need a CB.
/Duff'd It
Roby and Doran Grant are going to be the best 1-2 cornerback combo in the nation next year....
Number 36... Pick one.
Number 45... Pick one.
brian rolle?
I like football
I would be very interested to see what Urban could do with a guy like Brandon Saine. I remember in the Washington game he made a couple of nice catches and runs a ways down field. He also made a really nice catch in that LSU game. I think with a coach like Urban, Saine could of been a really good college player.
I've been thinking that all year. Saine was a great fit for Urban's offense.
Eddie George!
"Because I couldn't go for 3"
Katzenmoyer in the defense right now would give us the No. 1 in the land. Imagine him and RDS patrolling back there. Fugedaboudit
"Sherman ran an option play right through the south" - Greatest.Civil.War.Analogy.Ever
I would have said the Big Kat but since it is taken I say Jack Tatum! A big hitting cover guy..
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Big Daddy Wilkinson yet. Dude was a space-eating man-crushing beast
I was thinking the same thing, but for 2013 we have a lot of potential at DLine.
I think this is more of a conversation about drop off from best ever to current. LB and WR are high on the drop off list.
We are losing all 4 starters on our D line. I'd take big daddy to act as a leader for the young, draw double teams to free up one on ones on the edge for spence and diesel and keep blockers from getting to the second level so our young linebackers have space to work and develop
If it's based on who I want to see play= Eddie George
If it's based on a position of need for this team= Andy Katzemoyer
If I could take another that isn't a 'star' player, I'd go with Jermale Hines. I always liked the way he played, perfect for the hybrid position.
I'd say either Katzenmoyer, Hawk or Laurinaitis. While Shazier is good with his speed, having one of those big, punishing guys at MLB would be an excellent complement.
...and Michigan still sucks.
Great question......for me it is the big kat
I used to see this guy play for the Browns and Dolphins. The great Paul Warfield, I'd love to see what he could do in todays game. My dad used to talk about him all the time and he was the first Browns player i liked.
Gotta go with Chris Gamble...I'll never forget that INT return vs. Penn State. While he was remembered primarily as a defensive player, imagining him in Urban's offense is crazy.
"As long as we're keeping score, we're gonna try to win this thing." - UFM
i wanna say shawn springs because i think he liked to hit people.
but seriously i think lb or d-line biggest need for this year.... so i will go with spielman or jim stillwagon - and i only say jim stillwagon because i've heard stories that he was a man-child
I like football
Will Smith please.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Are you more of a fan of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince or the later 'Gettin' Jiggy Wit It' solo years?
Jack Tatum or Randy Gradishar
Spielman, since we need linebackers. But having any of this year's seniors would be great because those guys deserve the chance.
Antoine Winfield. Nothing happening against the Roby/Winfield shut down secondary.
Going off of need......... @ LB, James Laurinaitis.
#Buckeyes
After last night, who can argue that's stout MLB who can tackle wouldn't be #1 on the list?
Joe Bauserman haha jk
Tom Harmon, Ol' #98
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Keith Alan Byars
In 1984, Byars finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting (behind Doug Flutie) after a season where he gained an OSU record 2,441 all-purpose yards, including a then-school record 1,764 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns
well, it doesnt specify that it has to be a former ohio state player, just a former player.
so, I would love to see Reggie Bush in this offense (minus the trouble he gave USC, of course)
"FINISH HIM!"
..."Flawless Victory; Fatality"
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
Ugh, seriously? Talented but not the best pick if you are going outside of the buckeyes and not the best for Urban's system. Plus he needs help to be good.
non-buckeye that fits Urban's system, RG3! He is Reggie Bush that is a QB!
I would go AJ Hawk. I like the additions of Mitchell and Trey but this team could really use a proven stud LB.
player needed for this team, AJ Hawk
player fits Urban's system, Pryor
best possible player to start a team with, Orlando Pace
my favorite player, Eddie George
Offense: Santonio Holmes
Defense: Will Smith, AJ Hawk
Jim Otis, we need a real fullback to run Dave.GO BUCKS!
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
