Freshman playing time

With the recruiting class coming together, I was wandering who people thought would see the field right away. Some obvious choices are Bosa on the d-line, Mitchell and Johnson at lb, and some of the offensive playmakers like Marshall, EzE, and Baugh. Who do you guys think will be able to make an impact right away?

i think it will be tough for anyone to start right away... however, i do see a lot of players getting meaningful pt this yr... i dont think elliot will i look for bosa and marshall to be the most impactful freshmen

This would be the safe money unless they convert that WR (whose name I am forgetting right now) to full time punter.  I think it would be a horrible idea to use the place kicker as the punter unless it is necessary, because I feel like that drastically increases the likelihood of injury.

I think Baugh because I think he is a special talent at TE.  He could cause major matchup problems.  Don't get me wrong, I think Heuerman and Vannett played well at times this year, but I think Baugh gives us another weapon we just didn't have.

I think Marshall as well, because he simply has talent that can't be taught.  You'd best get that on the field ASAP.

Also I asked Alex who he thought would redshirt from this class in the recruiting mailbag a few days ago.

I asked him at 3:37 pm on January 2nd if you wanna scroll down and see his thoughts on who will see the field. It's about halfway down, sorry I'm not tech savvy enough to link to the actual comment

Townsend

Mitchell

Marshell

And Johnson depending on the defensive packages OSU will run.

EzE (Elliot) will most likely be a special teams beast

I wouldn't be surprised if Burrows, Apple, and Bell (if we get him) could be used in different defensive packages similar to Johnson. I'm tempted to say Bosa, but we are loaded on the DL after last year's recruits. Lastly, with my far out / surprise pick, I'm going with William Houston at the H-Back / Fullback position, I know he is an preferred walk-on, but it sound to me like he's ready fight and work to get a scholarship spot and he has the size to be excellent on Goal Line Run sets as an extra blocker or shove pass threat.

I'll go with Townsend!! Punters are undervalued, and if you have a really good one,who can pooch, directional, and just boom it,you can win a lot of field position battles.

Well thankfully in true Buckeye fashion, the season starts easily.  I think most, if not all of the players at thin positions will see time especially Mitchell.  You can't keep a guy that big and athletic off the field, he would have to have a terrible spring to not see the field.

I definitely think EzE and Marshall will get a chance in the hybrid role, more commonly known as the Percy Harvin role. Both look to have the skill set and the ability to make the big play out of nothing on offense, something that seemed to be lacking a bit this year.

I think Hall getting a redshirt could keep Zeke and Jacobs off of the field on offense. They could play special teams but I don't see significant PT.

I'd rather see Philly in that set than J Hall.  Hoping Zeke/Marshall impress enough to play there and move Philly outside.

I think Marshall, he should get the most playing time, along with some other receivers we may get, like Gibson

After reading the piece on RB's just a few minutes ago it looks like Zeke could be a playmaker this coming year.  I didn't realize he ran a 4.2.  I'd like to see him add 15-20lbs, but Coach Mick can do that.  I think Lewis, Marshall, Bosa, Mitchell, Johnson, Zeke, and Hill all get a legitimate shot at significant PT.  We will know after the non-conference games whether they're going to play much in conference tho.

about as legit as using an OSU website article, to say an OSU recruit runs a 4.2.

really, all for fun.  I hope Elliot is that fast.

Why use the website for info then if you don't trust what they're saying?  Food for thought... I hope is that fast too!

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 11 Jan 2013 - 5:30pm #

well maybe its not complete. Maybe its in the 4.2 range, like 4.29. Corey Brown currently on the team has a clocked 4.37 and supposedly can run 4.26, and that is not his numbers from recently, that was a while ago. So it is possibel Zeke can be that fast. And supposedly Roby now is faster that even Brown or anyone.

all I know is, this team has speed and when you have 2 linebackers that can run in the 4.3's, that is fast!

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 11 Jan 2013 - 7:35pm #

That's probably a typo. He clocked at 4.42 at the Opening. That's still really fast, but you'd know if a high school recruit was running a 4.2, trust me.

That said, Wikipedia is actually pretty reliable.

I've been through undergrad and grad school and Wikipedia has never been allowed as a source because it can be edited by anyone. It's not a reliable source.

Set your avi
buckatron32 on 11 Jan 2013 - 10:24pm #

It is definitely not a reliable source for academic research and should never be cited, but the information on Wikipedia is reliable most of the time. People check what is edited and false information is sniffed out pretty quickly most of the time. And the point of the post is there is no way Zeke ran a 4.2. The fastest ever at the combine was Chris Johnson with a 4.24, and I don't think EzE is quite that fast, at least not yet.

Just wanna know why everybody is forgetting about B.Price at Dt........When you people see this kid you will be really surprised by him from when you seen him on video....He is a monster....

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 11 Jan 2013 - 5:37pm #

I don't think its people forgetting him, it is the fact that is probably the deepest position on the whole team. We all know Washington and Schutt are legit and most likely will start if Bennett doesn't slide over. Still after that is most likely Chris Carter and Joel Hale. Plus he will also be battlign Michael Hill and donovan Munger as DT freshman and might be moved to OL which is loaded next year as well.

Injuries happen, he will play or at least in blowouts, but I think playmakers on offense and linebacker will be more likely. Despite the over the top talent that is Billy Price.

Tough call. Three areas of need I think are linebacker, offensive playmaker, and punter.

I'm gonna say Mitchell, Marshall, and Townsend get early PT at those positions. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Bosa on the D-Line since its gonna be a pretty young bunch anyways. Hopefully we see some Ezekiel Elliot too!

There are definitely opportunities for freshmen to get reps on both sides of the ball.

I expect multiple freshmen in the 2-deep on the defensive line and especially at linebacker, and both Mitchell and Johnson are going to have the opportunity to compete for a starting job, although I think people are forgetting about Perkins/Marcus/Perry.

On offense, we know Urban is still searching for some guys that can strike fear in a defense (aside from Braxton), so I expect Jalin Marshall to work his way into the rotation. Elliot is a skilled back and a nice change of pace, but the running back group is so muddled at this point that it's going to be difficult for him to see significant time, especially with the return of Jordan Hall.

Buckeye_in_SEC_... on 11 Jan 2013 - 4:35pm #

I think Boom Perkins could be the next Shazier... He's a freak of an athlete and runs a 4.4 40... That's pretty freakin quick for a LB.  He could see some valuable minutes next year if he can learn the scheme.

I don't really see any of the incoming guys starting day 1.  However I think they will be productive for sure.  I look at Bosa as a DT during 3rd downs or obvious passing situations.  He is really one of the best options to get to the QB.

I think Marshall and Elliot will find the field early, you can't keep play makers off the field.

Burrows/Apple/Conley/Bell* should all see time from the get go, just depends on how quickly they pick up the scheme.

Very few.  Always fewer than people expect.  Of course Meyer likes to get playmakers on the field, but I would expect 2 or 3 to see significant action outside of special teams.

I don't see how you keep Marshall off the field. I think he is far too talented not to see significant minutes in Urbans offense. I also think Bosa will see some time on the D-Line.

osu_chris's picture
osu_chris on 11 Jan 2013 - 8:18pm #

I think you'll see most (if not all) of the DB and LB recruits playing special teams at the very least. I can already see Worley laying someone out on kick coverage.

Actual starters or significant contributors... possibly Mitchell or Johnson at LB, but I get the feeling one or two of the guys already here will fill those spots.

The secondary seems set with Roby, Grant, Bryant, and Barnett. Maybe Burrows or Apple play as a 3rd CB or if someone gets injured.

Some of the D-Line recruits will probably get in the rotation at least. I know everyone is high on Bosa, and I am too, but I think Lewis and Sprinkle will make an impact getting after the QB.

Offensively, I think JMarshall will get the most chances to show what he can do with the ball in his hands. EzE will probably get a few touches as well. But for the most part, I think it will be the guys we already have.

Defensively, I can only see freshmen starting at LB.  They will get playing time but not start.

With Cam enrolling early and Corey Brown struggling big time at star and Murray and Bogard coming off ACL surgery I really think Cam could have the inside track on the starting Star.

Describing Pittsburgh's play as struggling is very charitable indeed.  Every time he was in the opponents audibled and threw between he and O Johnson.  Roby should be the beneficiary of an improved secondary ... he might get to see 2 or 3 balls thrown to his side

I would agree with you if UFM didn't have a belief in playing the "best players", because some of those freshmen will surely be better than other options on kickoff team or return team or getting some rotational experinece on the d line.  I wouldn't bet on any of them starting though!  If that's what you were referring too.

Don't believe in newbies at OSU or anywhere? Pretty sure TJ Yeldon put up over 1000 yards and he is a true freshman.

Pretty sure Bama had more kids in the recruiting class than just Yeldon.  I'm also pretty sure that having the best offensive line in college football helped a lot more than his actual talents did.

And to the other poster.  Yes I'm talking about starting or being the next man in.

Yeah like Amari Cooper who was an absolute stud this year. Sammy Watkins might of had more hype for his freshman season a year back but Cooper i think was every bit as impressive this year.

I think any of the studs on D will have a shot to play due to all the wholes that need filling.  Although Urban says jobs are won in the spring and fall is for game planning or whatever....I think regardless the D guys will all have a shot to see the field if they pick up the scheme and hit the weight room hard during the summer.
