Did anyone see the show today? Stephen A went crazy when the topic about the nfl coaching hires and not 1 of the hires be an african american. Which in turn brought up the Rooney Rule in which when a GM or head coaching position comes up at least 1 minority candidate must be interviewed. By no means am I racists in any way, in fact I was really hoping Cleveland would hire Lovie Smith after he was fired from the Bears, but I feel like this round of hiring for head coaches that all the teams that had vacancies mostly went for out of the box hires because they had tried everything else and failed. Every team except Kansas City who hired Andy Reid after his recent track record is that of not good what so ever. Anyways, your thoughts?

The rule is out dated and can be insulting. The owners spend hundreds of millions to buy teams and will always hire whoever they want. The rule hasn't made owners more likely to hire anyone, but it has artificially raised someone's hopes and insulted them to some degree when it becomes obvious that the owner was always going in a different direction to begin with.

Yeah, these teams always interview a token minority, thats why they can get away with it.Would have loved to have Lovey Smith at least interviewed as well, but no dice.It seems everyone interviewed Ray Horton, def coordinator with Arizona at the time, knowing exactly who they were going after all along.Guarantee,if NFL started fining these teams, and updating rules, teams would be interviewing and hiring A LOT more minorities.SAME OLD NFL!!!

I don't watch First Take, but I read a piece from Mike Freeman over @ CBSSports.com about this subject today. I do think it is a shame that there are not more minorities in coordinator and head coaching positions, but I am not sure if it is because of an Old Boys Network model of running teams that some suggest, or something else. I am not one who thinks that a guy should get a job just because they are a minority, rather a job should be earned and given to a deserving candidate regardless of their race.
Agree 110% with you TENNBUCKEYE19 on the fact that it should be earned, not just handed to them because your a minority. But a lot have payed their dues, and still aren't getting looked at or promotions.Raheem Moore would be one example. How many head coaching jobs or defensive coordinator positions he get interviewed for?? None to my knowledge.Just saying NFL execs have a way to curtail the rules and pick ultimately who they want.

Raheem Morris? Well, he had been a head coach in Tampa and it didn't work out. And I believe Cleveland did talk to him for their DC position. But it sounds like the Browns have hired Ray Horton, who is also a minority, as their DC.
I don't know what to say really, I mean owners are going to hire who they want to hire. I don't know if that has anything to do with race, though. If you're interviewing 10 guys and only 1 is a minority (or is required to be), the odds that you hire the minority are gonna be slim. So, should the league require a team to interview more than 1 minority to give minorities a better shot? I don't know.
First Take is this:
I don't disagree with Stephen A's general desire for better representation of minorities in these positions. It's just that their forum is so painfully awful and sensationalist that it is unwatchable. It used to be funny when it was Woody Paige vs. Skip Bayless as a 5 minute break from a real morning show. Now, it's where sports talk goes to die.
So, in short, save yourself a lot of time and listen to or watch the Dan Patrick Show (NBC Sports Network) instead.
wish i could but i don't get nbc sports network
The Dan Patrick Show (formerly Dan Pugh of WTUE rock station in Dayton) kicks ass
Amen to that. Dan Patrick show is great.

As a black man I really don't see the problem here. It's a job and you either get hired or you don't. Last time I checked there isn't a status quo in the NFL.
I don't see them complaining about most of the players in the NFL or NBA being minorities.
I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.

I agree. I wouldn't want a job because of my color, or because i had to fill a quota. it should always be the best PERSON for the job.
i wonder if stephen a would be as upset if the tables were turned the other way...
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Plus you have to feel bad for the guy who knows he is just being brought in to satisfy the Rooney Rule. I remember there was one offseason where Dennis Green was interviewed about 8 times but no one actually seriously considered him. There have been a few instances of guys refusing interviews because they smelled a token interview as opposed to real interest.
Rooney rule doesn't dictate that you hire a minority only that they be formally interviewed. I don't see why that would be an issue. It doesn't hurt anyone, it gives minority coaches an opportunity to impress in interviews and get their names out there.

I'm not a minority but the Rooney rule is in place to help get minorities more involved which is a good thing but on the other aspect I think minorities don't want to be used to fulfill a quota either. Best man for the job if your a minority and you've paid your dues you should get an interview.
