QB - T. Smith
RB - C. Wells, E. George, A. Griffin
WR - T. Ginn, T. Glenn, C. Carter, D. Boston, S. Holmes
OL - J. Hicks, O. Pace ... (and it still wouldn't be fair for opposing defenses with just these 2 on the O-line)
While I wouldnt put the Florida debacle on Smith's shoulders (lots of blame to go around), i would blame him for the prior year, when, IMO, we had a better team (better defense; better receivers). If he had not gotten susptended, OSU doesnt lose to Texas and PSU (I realize he played in those games, but he was playing catch up with the team, rather than firing on all cylinders).
Nothing against what Troy Smith did at OSU, but most reports were that he showed up to 07 NC game against Florida overweight and out of shape.. If true, that's unacceptable. I too would take Krenzel
I didn't get to see Gradishar or Cousineau play but in my opinion AJ Hawk is the best linebacker to play at TOSU! His senior season was unbelievable. He made plays sideline to sideline. Katzenmoyer was solid (really good his freshman year) and Speilman was your prototypical middle linebacker but neither one of them made the game changing plays Hawk did.
Surprised not to see the late Kory Stringer on anyone's list. He was the best offensive lineman I've seen in person at OSO, after Pace. He was a beast!
He was definitely one of the best, but hard to crack an all-time best 4 (5 if you are just looking at OL, and not designating a center). I picked Lachey just based on personal preference, but I could see Stringer as well. IMO, you have to start with Parker, Hicks and Pace and go from there, so really only one spot open.
Jim Parker, Outland Trophy Winner; College Football Hall of Fame, NFL all decade team; NFL 75 anniversary all-time team; Pro football hall of fame, No 1 draft pick
John Hicks, Heisman runner-up, two-time all american, Outland and Lombardi winner; NFL 1st round pick, College Football Hall of Fame, 1973 Sporting News College Football Player of the Year
Orlando Pace, Lombardi (twice) and Outland winner, two-time all american, Big Ten MVP (Silver football winner)NFL first pick, NFL all-decade team, multiple all pro (6-time pro bowl starter)
________
Jim Lachey, all-american, NFL first round pick, three-time all-pro; listed on Greatest Redskins team
Stringer - all american; NFL first rounder, NFL all pro (obviously he had a shortened career, so only one all pro selection)
I remember who he is perfectly well even though I wasn't born when he played. But the simple fact of the matter is that in today's game, he wouldn't even make it as a 3rd stringer because of all the weight training, nutrition and speed in general. I realize that will probably chap someone's ass but it is the truth. He IS and will ALWAYS be one of the all time greats but he belongs in his era. That's not knocking the man in any way. I'm sure however someone won't be able to figure out what I mean and yet again downvote me.
My problem with this argument (and everyone does it) is that we put Hopalong Cassidy in the discussion with today's generation of players, but we leave Hopalong as the same exact player he was back when he played. Why assume that a player in today's age is better than Cassidy because of those factors when they weren't available back when Cassidy played? It's not a level playing field.
He had some intangibles that some of the guys of today will never have. HEART for one! Second of all, he played with little pads and that leather helmet so you know he got hit pretty hard. So he had to have technically been "tougher" than guys today. Kinda like who would you say was better in Ray Lewis or Dick Butkus? Of course your going to say Lewis if it's a matter of speed and other qualities your going to take Lewis but in toughness, there's no quetion who you'd pick. Or in shear magnitude of how he affected the game, you'd easily take Butkus. It's hard to say either way. In basketball, I would take Pete Maravich over Michael Jordan any day of the week but I don't honestly think Pete would do as well in today's game. It's just the way it is. There's no disrespect for the legends.
Using the current staff's schemes and what would fit with what they do...
Defense (4-3):
DE: Vrabel, Gholston - Gholston is the pass rush guy, and Vrabel gets after it while still playing the run well.
DT: Wilkinson, Hankins - Wilkinson is the run stuffer while Hankins can go sideline to sideline as well as generate some pass rush
LB: Spielman, Hawk, Laurinaitis - Athletic group that flies around and can cover a bit
CB: Jenkins, Winfield - I like this group of corners... Bigger guys that can press
S: Tatum, Doss - BOOM
Tough to leave out Springs, Gamble, Katz, etc...
Offense (Spread):
QB: Troy Smith - Can't run as well as Brax, but will hit every throw
RB: Eddie George - Imagine Eddie getting the creases that Hyde was getting...
WR: Carter, Boston, Ginn Jr. - Crisp route runner with great hands, big physical possession guy with a deep threat, and a deadly weapon in Ginn that would work as the "pivot"
TE: Stoneburner - Not a great history of TEs at tOSU yet, but Stoney was probably the greatest receiving threat
"TE: Stoneburner - Not a great history of TEs at tOSU yet, but Stoney was probably the greatest receiving threat"
Not taking issue with your pick - its all about our personal opinions, but i would not say that OSU hasnt had great TEs or that Stoney was the greatest reciving threat.
For example:
John Frank - OSU stats- 121 receptions, 1481 yds and 23 TDs
Played for the 49ers in the 80s (two-time super bowl champ) and then quit to become a doctor while he was in his prime
I'm guessing you are young. Hawk and Laurinaitis were very good but Kat and Gradisher and Cousinau were awesome. Spielman was well, Spielman
Why are our linebackers names so hard to spell?
ya know, im gonna go a little different route here and come up with an "all-nasty" team.. swaggernauts, if you will, that were just awesome bros who were intidimidating as hell because they were awesome at buckeye football.
DB's - shawn springs, antoine winfield - bros, lock down hard hitters
Safeties - jack tatum, mike doss - super bros, heat seeking missiles
LB's - katz, speilman, little animal
D-line - jim stillwagon, mike vrabel, big daddy wilkinson, will smith... bro city.
Offensive line: orlando pace, korey stringer, lecharles bentley, jim lachey, and norwell (im rusty on offensive line)
QB - T. Smith
RB - C. Wells, E. George, A. Griffin
WR - T. Ginn, T. Glenn, C. Carter, D. Boston, S. Holmes
OL - J. Hicks, O. Pace ... (and it still wouldn't be fair for opposing defenses with just these 2 on the O-line)
Offense:
QB-Troy Smith
RB-Chic Harley, Archie Griffin
WR-Cris Carter, Paul Warfield
TE-Wes Fesler
OL (L-R) Orlando Pace, Jim Parker, Nick Mangold, Jim Lachey, John Hicks
Hey Liked most of your picks, but Paul Warfield was a RB at tOSU. Add Joey Galloway.
Jim Marshall was a good OT but how does one beat out Pace and Parker.
Collards
I am going with this top 11 with one substitution for goal line situations.
QB- Troy Smith
RB- Archie Griffin, Eddie George (goal line sub: FB-Pete Johnson)
WR- Joey Galloway, Cris Carter
TE- John Frank
OL- Orlando Pace, John Hicks, Jeff Uhlenhake (C) Jim Lachey, Chris Ward
QB: Troy Smith
RB: Eddie George/Archie Griffin/Beanie Wells
WR: Boston/Glenn/Ginn/Galloway/Holmes
TE: Fesler
OL: Pace/Hicks/Mangold/Parker/Adams
I'd make Eddie George and Orlando Pace the captains.
Just a life long Buckeye fan wanting to talk to other lifelong Buckeye fans. Our honor defend, we will fight to the end for OOO HIIII OOOOOO!
Smith did not get the job done.
QB - Krenzel or Kern
While I wouldnt put the Florida debacle on Smith's shoulders (lots of blame to go around), i would blame him for the prior year, when, IMO, we had a better team (better defense; better receivers). If he had not gotten susptended, OSU doesnt lose to Texas and PSU (I realize he played in those games, but he was playing catch up with the team, rather than firing on all cylinders).
Nevertheless, he is my all-time QB.
Nothing against what Troy Smith did at OSU, but most reports were that he showed up to 07 NC game against Florida overweight and out of shape.. If true, that's unacceptable. I too would take Krenzel
I wouldnt argue with Krenzel.
I do remember Troy talking quite a bit about In-an-out burger!
Offense:
QB: T Smith
RB: Eddie George
FB: Pete Johnson
WR: C. Carter; Glenn (though after Carter, hard for me to pick between Galloway, Glenn, Boston, Holmes)
OL: Pace, Hicks, Mangold, Parker, Lachey
TE: John Frank
Defense:
DL: Vrabel, Stillwagon, Brudzinkski
LB: Gradishar, Speilman, Cousineau, Katzenmoyer
DB: Winfield, Springs, Bell, Tatum
I didn't get to see Gradishar or Cousineau play but in my opinion AJ Hawk is the best linebacker to play at TOSU! His senior season was unbelievable. He made plays sideline to sideline. Katzenmoyer was solid (really good his freshman year) and Speilman was your prototypical middle linebacker but neither one of them made the game changing plays Hawk did.

Stringer - all american; NFL first rounder, NFL all pro (obviously he had a shortened career, so only one all pro selection)
Jim Lachey was an all time great in college and the NFL. I can't put Stringer above him.
if only "Lachey Right" would have worked!
Offense:
Q: T. Smith
R: E. George
WR: J. Galloway, T. Ginn Jr., T. Glenn, D. Boston
OL: O. Pace, K. Stringer, N. Mangold, J. Hicks, J. Lachey
Does no one remember Howard Cassady?
I remember who he is perfectly well even though I wasn't born when he played. The question was all time starting 11. If you don't want to use historical players, why not just ask favorite starting 11 from the last 15 year?
Based on recent forum threads and the Ohio State-related topics within, I will go with:
Offense:
QB: AJ McCarron's Mom
RB: AJ McCarron's Mom, Nick Saban's Daughter
OL: AJ McCarron's Mom, AJ McCarron's Mom, AJ McCarron's Mom, AJ McCarron's Girlfriend, AJ McCarron's Mom
WR: AJ McCarron's GF, AJ McCarron's GF, AJ McCarron's Mom
Defense:
DL: AJ McCarron's Mom (in 1987), Nick Saban's Daughter, Nick Saban's Other Daughter, AJ McCarron's Grandma
LB: AJ McCarron's Mom, AJ McCarron's Mom (in 1988), AJ McCarron's Dad
DB: AJ McCarron's GF, AJ McCarron's GF, AJ McCarron's Mom's left (possibly fake) boob, AJ McCarron's Mom
Taquitos.
So they are going to run the spread?
Hahahahahahaha, I just laughed in class..
LOL! Funiest thing I've read in quite awhile.
Gotta admit, I just got it after reading it a second time around. Good one!

I also think Pryor, Beanie, Holmes, Galloway would excel in this system... And Braxton might overtake Troy before he's done.

How about Ricky Dudley?
Ben Hartsock?
Jeff Ellis?
Jan White?
Randy Gradishar and Tom Cousineau.
John Frank was good as was Rick Dudley, Jan White and Ben Hartsock at tight end.
Collards
I'm guessing you are young. Hawk and Laurinaitis were very good but Kat and Gradisher and Cousinau were awesome. Spielman was well, Spielman

LB - Spielman, Gradishar, Katzenmoyer, Hawk
DB/S - Tatum, Springs, Winfield, Doss (HATE to leave off Gamble)
PK - Nugent
