Headline:  Cleveland Browns close to deal with Oregon coach Chip Kelly, according to report

Just found this very funny comment posted in that article:

In other news, the Cleveland Indians just signed the Home run king of the Toledo slow-pitch softball league. He claims he can adjust to major league pitching with no problem. Uggggggggh.....

Buckeye Beast's picture
Buckeye Beast on 5 Jan 2013 - 3:51am #

It would make so much sense really. Tebow ran the spread at Florida, Chip Kelly bringing it to the NFL might be Tebow's only chance at being an NFL starter. Plus Tebow will bring much needed recognition & publicity to Cleveland, we've been lacking that. We're one of those teams that some people seem for forget even exists.. Plus Tebows been working on his throwing motion, he's a passionate leader, a hard worker, & he's more than eager to prove himself on the feild. Give him a chance to do that, & he'll give his heart & soul to the Cleveland Browns. I still beleive Tebow can be a good NFL QB, he came up big for Denver when they gave him a chance.

Best case scenario: We surprise some people

Worst Case: Chip Kelly is fired before he even has a chance to draft Johhny Manziel.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere, & Michigan still sucks

Alex smith is an option too

William's picture
William on 4 Jan 2013 - 8:16pm #

Weeden is an option too folks... Weeden ran a ton of read plays at Oklahoma State where he would read the defense and either hand off the football or pull it out and throw it. Kelly's an offensive genius and could certainly pick up Todd Monken's Ok. State play book and mesh it with his own principles..

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden tweets he was kidding about not fitting in a Chip Kelly offense:

luckynutz's picture
luckynutz on 4 Jan 2013 - 11:35pm #

This is a dark day for me as a browns fan. I thought we had an owner who might have some sense . I obviously thought wrong. Had they made the trade and drafted rgIII, it would make sense. But they didn't, and this news made me sad. You had a chance to do something right haslam. And you do this. Looks like more of the same in cleveland. Obviously more worried about the style point involved with the hire than actual football merit.

Set your avi
Cubbies115 on 4 Jan 2013 - 11:45pm #

All other owners attempting to get him are in the wrong liking him as a top candidate too? He had extremely high interest and even Bill Bellichick wanted to learn from him. As a Browns fan myself this is a great opportunity to bring excitement and innovation to a bland franchise. Give him a chance because nothing else seems to have worked since the return. Chip Kelly has proven he can win games and is a well respected innovated coach and will change his offense to fit the NFL while bringing in his own style.

luckynutz's picture
luckynutz on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:05am #

He's proven he can win games...in college. The NFL isn't college. Its a totally different animal. Belichik didn't want to incorporate anything other than tempo of the offense. New england still runs a pro style set. I never said he was an idiot. But he isn't what this team needs. There is a solid core of young talent here. I'm still pissed they let heckert go. He was doing a fine job of turning over a roster. It just doesn't make sense. When you have a young team, you want someone who has proven themselves. Chip kelly has proven nothing as an nfl coach...he's never been there. That's my main issue with the hire. You claim you ant to turn things around...you take a gamble on an unproven coach with a roster full of young talent. Id be happy with wisenhunt. Or lovie smith. Maybe mccoy from denver. Or koetter from atlanta. These are nfl coaches. Who have worked in the nfl and understand the everyday business of running a professional football team. Say what you want about me, its just not the kind of hire I was expecting, nor is it the kind of hire that's going to change anything in cleveland.

sox33osu's picture
sox33osu on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:14am #

Agree with you on Whisenhunt or Lovie. I think either one of those would have been incredible hires. That said, I don't see a reason why Chip can't succeed on offense in the NFL. RG3, Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernik could all run his offense IMO and be successful. We already know we are close to getting it right on defense. On offense, if we get the right QB, I think Kelly's offense could be great. As I mentioned in another thread, getting Weeden out of Cleveland is worth it enough for me, and if Heckert had listened to me last year and not even thought about Weeden and waited to get Russell Wilson, he'd still have a job. Anyone who watched any film on Weeden could see his major flaws: questionable accuracy (which was largely masked by having Justin Blackmon and going up against pathetic Big XII pass defenses), terrible job dealing with the blitz, and problems with batted passes (had more last year in college than Wilson despite being, what, 4" taller?).

At any rate, it still doesn't look like the ink is on the paper yet, so we'll see. I'd gladly take Lovie or Whisenhunt, but I'm not upset about something new in Cleveland.

William's picture
William on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:19am #

Sox33OSU, Weeden was one of the more accurate passers in CFB, and he was sacked fewer times than RG3 was this year. Also, if anything, Blackmon benefitted from Weeden..

sox33osu's picture
sox33osu on 5 Jan 2013 - 2:22am #

William - Weeden was a very erratic passer in college, and this was mentioned in his scouting reports. Blackmon, as we saw this year, is a very solid WR. Weeden, however, looked completely lost so many times. He'd overthrow guys that were wide open, or just completely miss guys altogether. He had WAY too many balls batted down, and he was only effective when he had all day to throw. He has a strong arm, and he shows flashed sometimes, but he still has way, way to far to go for a soon to be 30-year old QB in the NFL.

Junior Samples's picture
Junior Samples on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:49am #

Not sure how a guy who got fired a week ago could be an incredible hire.

William's picture
William on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:17am #

Wait, you want the team to get better, but you wanted the Browns to hire two guys that had no business being HCs? They were great DCs, but Smith and Whisenhunt never should have been HCs. New England barely runs a pro-style, so much of their offensiv game is based off of Air-Raid concepts. You also can't say it's the hire that won't change anything, unless you have a crystal ball I'm unaware of?

luckynutz's picture
luckynutz on 5 Jan 2013 - 1:42am #

Considering wisenhunt was an offensive coordinator, there goes that part of your argument. And you seem to forget wis had arizona in the super bowl a few years back. Unfortunately,he worked for a gm who could not draft a o line to save his life. Coupled with no discernable option at qb and you get what happened in arizona. He made the most of what he had, and believe with better pieces he can be a solid hc. The browns have done a nice job assembling an o line. Sure, there are a couple weak points. But generally speaking, joe thomas is one of the best tackles in the nfl. Alex mack is a top 5 center, and schwartz did a decent job at right tackle, and should only get better with experience. Weeden isn't great...I get that. I was hoping they took kirk cousins later in the later rounds. Just saying cleveland has some nice pieces. All I would take is a proven nfl guy to pull them together and make it work. Not saying kelly wouldn't be a good nfl coach some day. But cleveland isn't the right fit now.

Cubbies115 on 5 Jan 2013 - 12:18am #

The NFL is evolving into more of a college style game outside of the few elite passing quarterbacks. The Browns most successful years were under a college coach in Butch Davis. I do agree letting Heckert go was a huge mistake, with his only disappointing pick the last fees years being Weeden for me. This is something that will be a wait and see approach and if it works this could be the new trend of pro football

Browns don't need washed up old coaches and we don't need assistants who have never coached. Lovie and wisenhunt were fired from their jobs, they can't be too great or they would still be coaching

Kelly is an offensive mind. He is no idiot. Give him a chance. If they would have hired BOB then yes I could see the comment but not for chip. I would have rather seen them go the way of going hard towards Lovie but if it didnt look realistic then sure get a big time offensive mind who's style of play is now attempting to be mirrored by other teams in the league.  Let me as you this Lucky, if not chip or lovie then who?

sox33osu's picture
sox33osu on 5 Jan 2013 - 10:37am #

It isn't like he's just saying he's solid to Oregon. His relationship with Campbell is the entire reason he's there, not because of Kelly. He also has made mention that as long as Helfrich takes over for Kelly (which he will), he doesn't expect to see much of a difference in their offense. He sounds entirely on board with Oregon to me. I hope I'm wrong.

My prediction, he goes to Cleveland for 3 seasons, moves Cribbs to QB for at least 2-5 games, until he can find his QB, he finds "his" QB, it doesn't work out, and he comes back to the NCAA to coach a slack team.  Kind of like how Rick Petino left Kentucky, went to Boston, then came back to the NCAA to coach Louisville.
