The two that won are the two everyone on here thought had a shot at winning.

Only big ten team I picked to win was msu, but northwestern was pretty impressive today and for most of the regular season

The only 2 teams I said would win were MSU and NW.  No surprise to me.   Although I thought that TCU game could go either way, I could swear I heard someone on ESPN or somewhere say the game was going to finish 17-16 MSU by way of a FG in the last minutes... Props to that guy.

Are we really at the point where not getting blown out is "decent"?

No surprise that the B1G lost most of its games when it was the underdog in nearly every one. Blame it on OSU and Penn State for screwing up the matchups (and the bowl selection comittee).

cplunk's picture
cplunk on 2 Jan 2013 - 7:52am #

There is no bowl selection committee. Each bowl chooses who they want based upon contracts they individually signed with conferences. This is true even in the BCS where the bowls select their own participants based on their BCS contract rules and their individual contract arrangements with various conferences.

Every bowl has selection committee.

The B1G needs to win more bowl games but I hate where the games are played and feel like the entire conference goes in at a huge disadvantage:

Rose Bowl - In Cali against PAC (home game for PAC)

Capital One - In Florida against SEC

Outback - Georgia against SEC

Sun Bowl - Florida against SEC

Heart of Dallas - Texas vs Big 12 (lol ok Purdue would of lost by 100 anywhere)

That is just yesterday. I wish if none of these games are going to be played in the north they would be played in more neutral territories.

The Outback Bowl is in Florida (Tampa) and the Sun Bowl in in Texas (El Paso....it's lovely just ask Lane Kiffin).

I was somewhat surprised at how well some of the B1G teams played.  Michigan lost on a big play near the end of the game, I think most people thought they would lose bad.  Nebraska lost to a Georgia team that some people had picked to beat Alabama in the SEC championship game, the game was competitive.  Wisconsin lost a game that they could have won, especially considering they had already lost their head coach and something like 7 assistants have already accepted jobs in other places.  For all that adversity, I think many people would have said that Wisconsin would lose big, plus don't forget that they were not considered a top B1G team for most of the season.

While the final record of the B1G in bowls isn't going to be pretty, I think the teams faired better than expected by most people.

So am I correct in my paraphrase of your comment below?

Considering the aweful expectations, we didn't get blown out (much) and we went 1-4 so it was a good day.

I agree with what you're saying.  I think the B1G showed well, despite the losses.  Not to mention that the best and one of the better B1G teams caused most games to slide up two spots against stronger opponents.

'We' to refer to the conference? We? We were banned.

I'm afraid that a Sith has taken control of your mind. Can't Ohio State fans just be fans of the team. Falling back on 'conference strength' is for the UK's and Indiana's and Cal's of the conferences.

Whatever happened to not giving a damn for the whole state of Michigan?

I think the "We" goes back to the rising tide floats all boats theory of college football.

there are 2 problems with the big 10 being down as it pertains to the Bucks:

1) Our ranking and SOS ranking will be hurt - remember even if we start 5th we need to move up and will definitely be behind any SEC, PAC 12, Big 12 or maybe even ACC team which is undefeated

2) I beleive that playing good teams makes you better prepared for bowl games.  By the time an SEC champ is crowned they are battle tested.  I beleive we will roll through almost every game next year which will hurt us when we play a team of equal talent and coaching.

WE are still in the Conference, ban or not.   No one cares about the other B1G teams... but it would look better for OSU and the AP voters had a the Big10 gone undefeated.

After watching Northwestern this season and looking at their depth chart, I think that our game against them may be the toughest on our schedule next year.  They have Coulter and Veneric Mark back and most of the offensive line.  Given the fact that its in Evanston may make this one of our most difficult obstacles for next year.

I called it when 11W put up how well the B1G would do in the bowl games.  I picked MSU and Nerdwestern to win...and the rest to lose (making it 2-5...which is shameful).  I'm not a big "got to be right" kind of guy (my wife would beg to differ though;-)

Overall the power of tB1G conference will matter much more in coming years.  So normally I wouldn't care, but now with the playoffs on the horizon, OSU has to hope the conference gets better.  It's not good now...and next year OSU may squeak in over a one lose SEC team to play in the NC if all goes well (or may be OSU plays a one lose SEC team...hmm just some foreshadowing-Bama, FL, or TX A&M for instance)...but when the play offs come...we have to pray the B1G is more competitive.

I picked MSU,NW and Whisky to win their games. Ill take 2/3. But aside from Purdue, The BIG came to play in these bowl games. Who would have thought that scUM was going to be in that game with SC down to the final seconds? Or that for three and a half quarters Nebraska was gonna be in that game with that UGA team? How about Minn. sticking in there with TT even punching them in the mouths a couple times. The BIG was def. not a door mat this year in bowl games. These teams had to earn those W's.

I will say this, if this was supposed to be a down year in the BIG then HOLY COW. I cannot wait to see what next year brings for these teams in the BIG.

MediBuck's picture
MediBuck on 2 Jan 2013 - 3:05pm #

We did surprisingly well, actually. Nebraska kept it close and led quite a bit, as did scUM and Wisky. NWern won in convincing fashion. And you can tell, because ES(EC)PN isn't crowing this morning about how terrible the B1G is. Everyone expected the mighty mighty SEC powers in UGA and SCar to completely blow out their overmatched Big Ten whipping boys, and they did not go quietly into the night (Seriously? A 2-loss Carolina vs. 4-loss scUM had to go into a final-play desperation heave?).

And as some astute posters mentioned above, I can't stand the rest of this conference, but we need them to represent in bowl games to make OSU's strength-of-schedule look good next season. I'd hate for a 0-loss Oklahoma State or Clemson to edge us for the National Championship by virtue of "strength of schedule".

I understand giving B1G teams credit for "playing well" and not getting completely embarrassed (except for the Hope-less Boliermakers). I wanted the B1G to represent well in bowls, and rooted for everyone except UM, because, well it's UM. And while we should tip our hats to them for how they played (minus Purdon't), a loss is a loss.

FWIW: Where I live here in SEC country, nobody is talking about how well the B1G teams played against the SEC or Stanford. They are talking about how Northwestern was the only team to win their game and how the B1G is crap.

bhardy22132's picture
bhardy22132 on 2 Jan 2013 - 3:36pm #

your right a loss is a loss. But when I go to work here in a little bit I will be around SEC homers living down here in SEC country as well. I will listen to what they have to say and will come back with this, the Realistically 4th best BIG team took your second best SEC team three and a half quarters. 4 loss team in scUM took your 2 loss SC team to the last seconds when in reality they should have squashed scUM. And unranked Whisky lost by SIX to sixth ranked Stanford. Whisky is not ranked!!!

The reality is they can say what they want but in the back of their mind they know from what they saw yesterday that the BIG is alot closer than they thought. In the back of their minds they are really happy that Ohio St. and Penn st. werent eligible, and they are really scared that Ohio st. is going to be eligible in 2013.

Thank You Northwestern and Sparty.....  0-7 would have been really Ugly.

Next year we can resume our rightful place as undefeated B1G CC and start to change the national conversation about the B1G. Providing we get some help from Nebraska & tSUN with a tleast a .500 2013 bowl season.
