Bayless at it again...

I think Bayless should crawl into a cave and not come out. What do you guys think?

Field goals are just part of the game. Why must people try to constantly break down tradition in the name of progress. Leave football alone.

i'm not going to click it, i refuse to give espn page views for ridiculous things like this.

i mean, while we're at it. why not just stop keeping score and award a team the winner based on who displayed the best sportsmanship?

It matters... football, soccer, rugby and many other sports stemmed from one game (most similar to rugby today). The games evolved from a set of rules by changing the rules slightly over time. Over 150 years later, we have very distinctly different games. They all started with a very big mix of kicking a ball into a goal or between two poles as part of active play along with crossing a goal line. American Football has deviated so much, that the rules basically have changed enough that the kicking game is a special play done only a handful of times a game.

It now does stick out and stops the flow of the game. It no longer is a normal part of the game, but rather an odd change in gameplay and focus. The question is, has it been marginalized enough to warrent removal? It is clear that it is not as important as it once was, but is it too out fo place to keep anymore? He makes some good points. The game changes, the focus changes, it isn't out of the question to state tha maybe some reminents of the original game are out of place.

To play devil's advocate here (but then again, I agree with this thought so there's no real need to play that...), how does it actually stop the flow of the game? You don't get any additional time on the play clock when kicking a FG.  The game keeps moving whether or not they are running a play or kicking a FG. There really is not stoppage in the flow of it. And if that stops the flow so much, wouldn't punting the ball do the same thing? All you would do is inherently see more of that.

If stopping or slowing the flow of the game is the concern, I think people need to realize that more of these lags in the game are caused by TV timeouts. After a change in possession, you will see a TV timeout 90-95% of the time. This won't change either.

As for it being a focus...of course it's a focus. Just like going for it on 4th and inches is a focus of the game. It's a (possible) final play of a drive that could change momentum. Of course more focus will be on that than when it's 1st and 10 from your 20. Certain plays/parts of the game insinuate themselves into being areas that are focused on more...it'll be that way even if you eliminate FG kicking.

In my opinion, I don't see FG kicking as stopping the flow of the game. The commercialization of the game is stopping the flow of the game. Why should we eliminate an aspect of the game because people chose to make these games longer in order to profit from it?

steensn's picture

I am just playing devils advocate as well...

As a stopage of flow, taking the offense out to put in another set of players that don't do what 95% of tthe game is about for one play does change the focus and flow.

I can agree that others things cause more concern regarding flow. I was just playing devils advocate because of the major bashing of article.

I just disagree with this completely. It's part of the game. Like technical free throws or regular free throws are part of the game of basketball. Stops the flow of the game? No way. It is part of the game.

steensn's picture
steensn on 31 Jan 2013 - 3:40pm #

That is a fair statement, but I will just add that originally it soudns like it was more like Australian Rules Football and Rugby where the kick was live during the action. American Football added in stopage of play and other rules taking the kick out of normal play and made it a special play (hence the term special teams). You now have special players who only kick a ball and fall outside what happens in 95% of the game. It has evolved from what it was, it is fair to ask if it has evolved into something that is not good for the game.

I kept my personal views out of it so far, I like the kicking game, it adds a level of excitement to it. But it is fair to say that it is an odd part of the game that isn't like what it used to be. Some people are simply not going to like it, others will. But we can agree that it is not part of the flow that it used to be.

Field Goals and good FG kickers factor into coaches macro game plans. Not surprising that Skip has missed the point and fails to grasp common concepts unique to the sport he claims to know something about. He's a world class, grade A jackass.

What's more concerning-there are people that DONT think that...some people take what he says as truth. To a lot of people, ESPN is a viable news organization.

Sorry all but I have to mostly agree w/ him. There's nothing I hate more than watching a team drive the ball to the 35 yd line then sit on it. It's almost always the same in the NFL, get to the 35, 2 runs up the middle, 50 yd FG for the win. I enjoy when the kicker misses is, it's a "serves you right" moment. That being said game winning FG's do have an overload of suspense so getting rid of them entirely might be a bit extreme. I'd be in favor of a rule saying you're not allowed to attempt more than 2 FG's per game. Add's quite a bit of strategy as to when to use them. I think you'd see most coaches save them for the end of half and end of game scenarios so you'd still get the late game winning FG suspense but with more "meat" on the bone dring the middle portions of the game.

You win games by scoring TD's, that's how the game was meant to be played.

Kicking is a strategy, not a requirement. Removing or limiting field goals from the game is the stupidest idea ever.

The people that watch 1st Take are constantly misinformed on a daily basis.

Skip Bayless has been addressed above.

Stephen A. Smith whines like a girl and only looks smart in comparison to Bayless.

Eric Mangini is Eric Mangini and is probably the only one with a brain. Unfortunately, it's Eric Mangini. Besides, he's apparently getting a coaching gig sometime down the road.

Why not watch Around The Horn? At least you get to read Woody Paige's ironic chalkboard messages.

I wouldn't agree with eliminating field goals, but there might be a case to be made for making them more difficult at the NFL level by narrowing the uprights (something which has happened before). By historic standards, field goal kicking is much more automatic than it used to be--which I assume is the reason the NFL decided to adopt the new overtime rule, because it was getting too easy for a team to win the coin toss and then kick a winning field goal after just a couple of first downs.

There were 4 different NFL teams that didn't miss a single field goal inside 50 yards this season. I think the game could benefit from more randomness via the kicking game, and not less as Bayless would prefer.
