This post is the result of a post on the "More 3 * players Post" and the back and forth of "do stars matter" and "I'll take my 4/5 stars vs. your 2/3 stars and we'll see who wins". I've always wondered what happened to these guys. I kept this to 5* because tracking 4* players would end up with tracking nearly every player over the last decade. I remember most of these guys but draw a blank on some as once they stop playing it's hard to google what happened. I put in years starting as I remember them. Looks like only roughly 50% made it to be starters which is probably more than any other * group but less than I would have guessed.
So what happened?

Some call him Maurice (number 13)
because he speaks of the pompitus of love....
I'm pretty sure John Simon wasnt a five star.
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
From Scout - 5* - #5 DT Nationally
That is the other thing... there are so many services now there are a LOT of 5 stars. Rivals had Simon rated as a 3 star (talk about being off ;) ). So is he a 3 star or 5 star? Cleary Scouts saw what the coaches saw...
I agree, I just picked scout to remain consistant. I think they got John Simon about right as the 5 th best d lineman in his class. Not sure what happened to the other 5 stars other than Sheldon Richardson.
The others in his class were:
1 Jacobbi McDaniel - FSU
2 Gary Brown - UF
3 Jamarkus McFarland - OU
4 Sheldon Richardson - Mizziou
6 William Campbell - UM
Chris Davenport - LSU
Corey Adams - ASU
McDaniel is still at FSU, I believe, and is pretty decent. He redshirted this last fall due to injury but was a starter from his true frosh year.
Brown went to jail a few years ago, not sure what's happened to him since.
McFarland played sparingly at OU thruoghout his career and I don't think has much future in the NFL.
Richardson is quite good.
Will Campbell got moved to OL under RR and then went back to DL under Hoke. Has been decent but nothing special.
Davenport didn't do much at LSU. Redshirted his freshman yet, barely played as a RS Frosh, moved to OL, backed up Faulk, got his degree and is now going to Tulane to play a la Russell Wilson.
Corey Adams (who was considering OSU) played sparingly in 4 years at ASU
The one thing I don't like about Scout is that the hand out 5* ratings like halloween candy. If you look at this year for example, they have 42 FIVE star players whereas Rivals has 26, 247 has 28, and ESPN only has 9(which I feel is how it should be).
I think it should depend solely on the player and not a given number per year. 5 Stars should only be players who will have immediate impact for a high level team and/or NFL caliber.
THIS! I've never been able to put it into words so well.
I preffer less 5 stars as well. Further, there are too many 4 stars IMO devaluing the 3 star prospects. I think they could cut at least 1/2 or more of the 4 stars to 3 stars pretty fast.
From my perspective, that is pretty good. Injuries and 4 stars (not THAT much worse) end up being better.
Bell is at Duquense, Fellows was a medical casualty
Norwell has started the past 2 seasons
vacuuming sucks
Let's see:

That was just too easy...
Nice Alex! I was going to comment on D'Andrea, but you got it. I remember him being recruited out of Texas. He was supposed to be a complete stud. I think he would have had the injury bug not ruined his career.
D'Andrea went to high school in Avon Lake, Ohio.
He was split between us and Nebraska if I remember correctly.
Ah crap... where did I get the Texas LB recruit from? I'm losing it...
His recruitment biography:
"Andy Katzenmoyer clone but has a 3.5 GPA. Averaged 12 tackles a game this season despite playing through a knee injury that limited his mobility. Never missed a game despite the injury. Arguably the nations # 1 LB prospect."
Some pan out, some don't I suppose.
Will or are they moving Grant to DE for sure? OSU sure does seem to have alot of them.
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."

also, looking at 2012 5-stars:
NOAH SPENCE: already contributing year 1, and set to start year 2
ADOLPHUS WASHINGTON: see above
TOMMY SCHUTT: see above
BRIONTE DUNN: contributed a bit year 1, but injuries and mental lapse to grasp offense kept him off field more...will contribute in year 2
Where do you think Steve Miller plays relative to Spense / Washington / Newcomers?
Edit - Meaning similar to Nathan Williams, SSE or DT
JB Shugarts: Led the country in false starts for his career and was the driving force behind the amazing phrase "he Shugarted." This cannot be underestimated in terms of contribution. I'd labadd "Awesome 2 seconds before you were ready" to his grade.
When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."
Fixed
I expected a lot more from Steve Miller, it says a lot when freshmen start over you when you were a 5 star recruit.
Are you referring to Spence when Williams was out?
Yes, if Steve Miller was that good he should be starting by now or at the very least be the backup which clearly he wasn't.
I think the majority of the 5-stars we have gotten have turned out to be very productive players. However, I am starting to believe that recruiting rankings may be a bit over-hyped. My bases for this claim are to look at Auburn and USC the past 2 years and compare it to the quality of their recruiting classes. I think a little while ago I went through the top 100 on scout from 2006, 2007, etc. and you can observe that while many of them turned out to be productive, at least 25 of 100 each year turned out to be busts or have some other reason for lack of productivity.
Thesis of my post: recruiting is important but I don't think it is a fraction as important as coaches developing the players and an individual's drive to succeed.
Agreed - PHD given.
Agree. As much as some of us crap on Wisconsin, they are a prime example of recruiting players who fit their system and then having the right coaches in place to develop said players. USC/OSU/ALA, etc can get all 4 and 5 star players but if you don't have the right coaches they may not reach that high star potential.
i would buy the wisky part if they were winning 10 plus every yr like most of the teams u mentioned. they are good at bringing their type of player along. but the more 4 and 5s you have the busts dont hurt as much.
I dont know karate but i do know crazy and i'm not afraid to use it.
&
I guess what I was saying was that stars don't mean much as long as you recruit within your system and have the right coaches in place. Schools like Wisky don't recruit like schools like OSU and Bama so they need to recruit a certain type of player with the right coaches in place. That's why schools like Wisky can compete on the field with schools like OSU...but you are correct, the margin for error is much lower as a result.
Regarding steve miller I think he's a beast n will play a lot for us as in my comment above. I know both him n pittman personally n have watched there whole careers from middle school I always thought pittman was better. Steve sr yr n sevons jr yr I thought pitt was the best player on that mckinley dline just more range and a crazy build

I didn't pick up on them being on the same team in HS. I can't imagine the poor QB who was running for his life.
I have always heard that more 5*s are given out if many of the 5* commit early and that if you commit early you often tumble in the rating agency's rankings. They are a business too and need those 5 stars to keep people buying subscriptions and keep the interest up.
"Because the rules won't let you go for three." - Woody Hayes

The majority of these players panned out. Star ratings are often fairly accurate, but you get two to five players per team every year that should have been rated differently. Just goes to show that it's impossible to predict the future.
Have to remember these are 17 year old kids still developing physically and socially. Some 5 stars just don't pan out. On the flip side, lots of 3 stars do ... Hawk, Laurinitis, and Malcom Jenkins to name a few. I think even Troy Smith was a 3 or a low 4 and recruited as an ATH. Urbs does the right thing in looking for kids that are competitors and have a snarl to them. Amazing things can happen at this age with investment in the weight room and in attitude. Sorry, Alex, totally disagree with Brewster or at least Adams as a monster. Those 3 5 stars drastically underperformed. Reference Jim Bollman.
Brewster was a monster his first 3 years. Then seemed to take a step back last year. But under the circumstances it was understandable. Nobody played up to par last year. Brew was not only important on the field, but also instrumental in bringing that monster class together. Adams, for all his stupid actions, was an excellent left tackle. Did he like the ganja a little too much? Yes. I can honestly say though, when he came back last year after his 5 game vacation he played some seriously good football. Shugarts, well...he was shugarts. Beginning of this season I wondered if his ghost was haunting the RT spot. Fragel kept leaving early, and I'm sure that is the only piece of advice he had for reid on his way out. False start early. False start often. And false start when it will totaly screw the team the most.
