I don't think he leaves this year. Maybe next. But withers would be a big loss, specifically in recruiting the Carolinas. He had so many connections down there that will be hard to replace
Still not the biggest loss in terms of the team, wouldn't be the worst case scenario. Hey, maybe we can grab Charlie Strong with a grossly high salaried assistant coaching job hahah
I completely agree that he won't be the biggest loss, especially if we retain Fick. There will still be continuity on the defense if Withers goes, we just lose some of the foothold in NC he helped us gain. Would love to keep him on, but wish him the best should he pursue a HC career
I think the biggest loss is in recruiting. He gets us a foothold in an area that we didn't have a strong presence in. Hopefully just by having him start that we can find someone who can maintain it (similar to Herman and Texas).
Gees, their program is headed in the exact opposite direction-they were 0-12 this year, fired their coach after one year on the job. Not so sure that I would want that job given what OSU should achieve next year (no, not necessarily a national championship, but end up pretty darn high up there), but hey, Coach Withers didn't ask me.
Hey guys, I just thought of this, but now that Withers is expected to interview at Southern Miss. and Fickell at Kent St. it's certainly possible for Urban to lose both his DCs. So I ask this question, if that happens, who's out there that Urban can go get? Will he try to go after someone who is currently a DC at a big school or a LB coach, such as the dude at Florida?
Withers is a very good coach, but IMO hes an even better recruiter. Has those ties in the NC, SC, and that area. Hope he doesn't go yet. I'd at least like to see him go to a BCS school.
Always thought he would be first to go for any opportunity. Anything to get started in a head coaching position. We would be ok but would have issues if he and Fickell both left at the same time for sure.
Depends on whether Coach Withers wants a head coaching job bad enough to want to rebuild an 0-12 team. He wouldn't have taken the interview if he wasn't interested. Hmmm, 0-12 or 12-0? should be a no-brainer but we'll see. I just hope Fickell can handle the job all himself. Maybe they'll promote Vrabel to co-D coordinator, too.

Everett was an assistant at Southern Miss from '92-'93. Sounds like the former coach made more than Withers is making now at tOSU, so I can see why he'd at least do the interview.
As for Fick, he's getting paid well here at tOSU. Kent State paid Hazell less than Fick is making now, so they would have to offer considerably more money to lure him away, imo.
A couple things that might keep assistants around another year: First, the excitement of making a championship run. I think everybody at the WHAC knows that OSU starts the season as a certain top 5 team and among those 5 teams probably has the easiest path to an undefeated season. Sure, football is your job, but championships are always the ultimate payday. Second, and speaking of paydays, any assistant who stays through a championship season immediately adds a crystal ball to his negotiating position. Better jobs and bigger paychecks await.
Interviewing and getting the job are two different things. Withers could be testing the waters for next year. Or he could be simply dropping in to see if a former school is interested in retaining his services as HC ahead of the schedule you'd expect. 12-0 is a powerful thing on a resume. But in my opinion, I think that next year will determine if we have a mass exodus of coaches or not. I think that a national title run would see us lose Herman and Fickell or Withers or both. Then the question becomes does Urban promote from within, or go out and get some more top notch assistants? I know Chuck Heater was thrown around as a candidate for a job, I could see him coming here to be a DC if one or both of the current DCs left. For now, I honestly think the staff is completely secure for next year. After that, though, I think we'll have a lot of trouble keeping the staff intact for the 2014 season.
Gotta think that Fedora's OC at UNC has the inside track here. He was Fedora's OC at Southern Miss; after their debacle this season, they're going to want to replicate that at all costs.
I highly doubt that he leaves right now. He would be best suited to stay another year and become the hot pick for a bigger program. The Buckeyes are primed to have a great season next year, and a major BCS Bowl win would have his name in lights. Why leave a huge program for a 0-12 CUSA team. I think he is going through the interviewing process for the experience alone. No worries here.
That's not entirely crazy to be honest. You'd think a head coach 3 years removed from a ring wouldn't take a coordinator job but he isn't going to get a major offer either. I guess its a matter of preference, would you take the top job at a middle tier program or a coordinator position at top tier program trying to rebuild your newly tarnished rep.
I'd be interested to see how Chizik's situation shakes out, the dude knows his football but does have the stain of having a monumental failure on his resume, having fallen so fast.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Chizik is kind of like Wade Phillips in the NFL. A great coordinator and a great football mind, but not a very good head coach. I'd take Chizik in a heart beat as a DC
I'd take Chizik as well, but he might want to sit out a year to re-group from that mess at Auburn.Plus, with possible sanctions coming, don't know if Urbs would take that same chance on him as D-coordinator.
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

If he is offered a head coaching job and the situation is okay then he should take it. I would wish him the best.

I'd expect to bring back Jim Heacock. No way BERT is keeping him down there.

Heacock is retired, are you thinking about Haynes?

Wonder if we could make a play to bring back Fred Pagac if Withers ends up leaving! Those were fun defenses to watch!

Spielman?? Seems to have a good relationship with Urban.
If Withers leaves, any chance we look to Chizik as a DC?
