Vonn Bell Max Redfield

Most recruiting sites say Vonn Bell is going to Bama and hes yet to take an Official to TOSU. Assuming theyre correct would this staff try to make a real push at Redfield or settle with Jayme and Darron? Who would the spot saved for Vonn go to?

Most places i've read have Redfield staying with USC or going to ND. Would love to have Redfield though. His vids are spectacular.

It'd be great to get him and Bell.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

If neither end up in the class, the spot likely gets filled with another position. It would take pressure away from the LB number, and Darron Lee and Chris Worley are LB/S hybrid types

Exactly, and don't forget that Burrows may move to safety. I don't see the safety position as one that is in need at the moment.  In this class alone, there are 3 potential safeties in Burrows, Lee and Worley.  In the previous class, Murray and maybe Powell could make the move to safety.   The bodies are there, but with that being said, it is critical this upcoming year to develop some talent at this position, both our starters leave after this next season.  This is where grabbing a natural S recruit would benefit us, less learning curve.

Don't forget that Bogard was recruited as a pure safety. But I've heard nothing about Burrows moving that wasn't word of mouth speculation from fans, so I won't validate that until I see something when he gets on campus.

It is speculation, you are correct, but I do believe it has trickled down to fans from recruiting sites and experts.  I don't think it's unreasonable though given that he's still growing and is already 6'2" 195lbs.  It possible that after a year in the program he's going to be 6'4" 230lbs.  I also read speculation a while ago that because of his size and continued growth, he may have trouble with turning his hips as a cornerback.  Thus, prompting him to move to safety.  Given our depth at safety looking ahead to 2014, I think this move is very likely.  The good thing is, he's supposed to enrolll early and this can be sorted out or at least evaluated in spring camp.

Well to say that a senior in high school is gonna grow another two inches is far fetched, but I'm not saying I don't think he's a candidate to move to safety. Also, he already has trouble moving his hips, which is where recruiting experts think coaches could draw a move to safety. I agree, but my point is just that I don't want to get ahead of myself when thinking about the future, and have everyone plan for this kid to be a safety, when he may very well stay at CB.

I didn't say he would, I said he could be 6'4" 230 in another two years - I have no idea when he will stop growing and will not pretend that I do - but it's not far fetched for kids to grow up to 20 or so.  On the average though, 2 inches from 18-20 is uncommon - 1/2 inch is the most common.  I think we'd both agree that he with easily put on pounds of muscle after a year and a half in the program.  All my point was, was that if we miss on Bell, I think we already have some guys on the roster who can play safety.  No one plans on changing positions, but the staff has shown that it will change positions to get the best players on the field.

Oh no worries, I definitely agree with your points on that one, was just splitting hairs.

The thing I have with Vonn Bell that I think is interesting is that none of our coaches have even gone to visit him that I have seen or heard of. And they haven't either offered any others to potentially take that spot unless they see more in linebackers.  Somehow I feel the staff knows things. Idk, this is a weird recruitment.

They aren't visiting him because Vonn has shut down has recruitment until his season is over.  The coaches are probably just trying to respect his space while he competes for a state championship.  Also, he has montioned many times that he has all of the information that he needs to make a desicion, its just a waiting game now basically.  Hopefully we end up with this guy, we need him on the good side!

I think I recall that Withers attended one of Vonn's recent games, so I'm not sure you're accurate in thinking the coaches haven't visited him.

I thought I read on another site that Urban, and maybe a few others on staff were going to attend his state championship game tomorrow.

With the dead period coming up and Bell making an announcement after his season Urban should be the one attending his game.  I'm not saying I know Urban is the one... I'm saying Urban SHOULD be the coach attending the game.

I would love to have Bell but if we don't land him we'll be fine. I'm a big fan of Murray, boy will come up and lay the wood.

Saban and Pruitt will be at Vonns' game. I hope The Block O lettermans make an appearance at the Georgia Dome.

If saban bolts bama I think OSU snags him easy.

We don't know how long the process for Saban to be contacted by NFL teams will take.  NSD is February 6th and Saban might not have made a decision by then.

well Vonn Bell is our #1 Safety target w/ Redfield being our #2 option or showed say he was. I heard he recently dropped up/no longer consider us because we havnt offered him. OSU staff never offered him because they didnt want to scare of Bell.

I looked at it as a win/win option if we offered Redfield.

1. Bell would catch the hint that we dont want to get burned by him at last moment & we are interested in other safeties, so if he wants his spot get on board now or he could lose his spot.

2. Bell goes elsewhere & we land Redfield.

Redfield has us #1 without an offer before he apparently dropped us for not having an offer.

I also read that Redfield put us #1 so that ND and USC would turn up the heat and show him more attention.  Never know with these kids.

Or the staff knows something that we don't about Bell.....

It's pure speculation that bell is going to pick bama. If bell does choose UT or Bama though I think the staff does re-evaluate the rest of the field and we see a Redfield offer.

I've seen his quote from a couple of weeks back (saying we were the leader), but I don't think we were ever a player for Redfield and that, as Oregon suspected when they dropped his recruitment, he was just playing schools to get more interest from USC and ND, the two teams he is invested in, as Buckeye_In_SEC suggests.

I know it has been said other places, but it can't hurt to say it again. Redfield never seriously considered OSU. In the context of the interview, after Oregon stopped recruiting you, they asked him who would be next in line after USC and ND.  He then said OSU if he had an offer.  I don't know how people interpreted this as him having us on top, but so be it.  Long story short, he is not visiting/considering/coming to OSU.

My take on safety is that the staff obviously wants Vonn and he has a spot not matter what. However, I am not as sold as others that not offering Redfield indicates the staff feels good about landing Bell, then again thats not to say it doesn't indicate that.

I think that if we miss on Bell the staff may use the scholly to try to fill another position, and might not offer Redfield. With Cam (a potential safety down the line), Woodard, Thompson, Lee, Conley, and probably Worley thats six DBs with four potential safeties. While yes Lee and Worley are S/LB "star" position players and Conley could play WR, they still all could be used to shore up defensive backfield if needed. With the needs at other positions (LB, O-Line, and WR) I could see the staff using it for one of those spots. I think guys would might have potentially been out before could become possibilities, guys like: Corn Elder, Ryan Timmons, Tommy Sanders (even though he may now have an offer?), Lovell Peterson (if Dawson goes elsewhere), David Williams (who the staff wants to visit), someone completely off the current radar, or the much discussed potential "mystery flip." Depending on how the rest of this class shakes out, especially if we land Quick, I could see the staff bank the scholly for next year as well - could open up an offer for two QB's.
