Today Russell Wilson tied Peyton Mannings record for TD passes for a rookie. Russell is what I thought Troy Smith could've or maybe should've been. If you watched them both as seniors they are very comparable...both accurate with solid mechanics, good at making reads and both could escape pressure and run/scramble. I would've loved to see Troy drafted into the same system/team as Russell to see how things might have been. In the NFL of you're not drafted to be the franchise QB it's quite possible that you're never going to get the snaps, attention and chances to prove yourself. I know Troy had some chances but I just don't think he was ever in a position where a team invested enough in him. It's a shame because he really seamed to have the talent and ability level of a Russell Wilson.

Well said, and while I do think Wilson has a little more arm talent than Smith, I also think you're right in thinking that Troy could've been successful if he was in a place that invested a little bit more in him. Welp just another reason to hate those bastard Ravens.

Troy Smith was a bad NFL football player. That, and that alone, is why he didn't succeed.
So just to clarify, you think if he went into the NFL in the exact situation as Russell in Seattle he would've flopped. I don't think you can say for sure, but it would've been interesting to see.

I wouldn't go as far as calling him "bad". I've seen a lot worse. For what he was --- 6th round pick I think --- he actually did pretty decent.
Troy Smith had some great moments with the 49ers a few years back, and a couple with the Ravens.
I'd give Smith a shot over some of these other guys, (hello Arizona Cardinals entire QB depth chart).

Bingo
I always hoped the Browns would have picked him up.
Troy had a very long release and trouble throwing over the line which Wilson has a more compact motion and almost throws off his toes in the pocket a la favre.
Wilson also played in two separate offenses in college and was a fairly successful minor league baseball player. Although I love Troy and wish he was what Wilson is, I think Wilson's success is more attributed to him and less the system he's playing in.
I'm just glad Wilson went 0-1 against us.
Is it just me or did it seem like something happened to T Smith after we beat the tsun and the long layoff heading into the NC game... his accuracy became terrible. In the game. In the lil allstar challenge thing they had for seniors, and then in the NFL when he used to have pin point accuracy it seemed... I always wondered why he suddenly looked so different heading into the NC game and after. Although the NC game our OL was an embarrassment so that doesn't really help.
Troy got unlucky with a tonsilectomy after beating out Flacco. Then Flacco started winning...
