Tressel to Tennessee?

The rumors are out there.

I'd love to see the Vols do this, if only so that they can "show cause" to the NCAA why James Patrick Tressel should be employed.  Might be nice to see somebody -- ANYBODY -- outside of Ohio make the case.  Because there's one to be made.  One would have expected at least one national writer to step up and argue exactly why Buckeye fans were honoring Tressel at the Michigan game last weekend.  But there's more hay to be made in pandering to the fans of 119 other teams than in writing something thoughtful that might encourage folks to drop their torches and pitchforks into angles of repose.

The truth is that college football is not better off without Jim Tressel coaching.  Maybe the media doesn't see much value in sitting down and weighing the pluses and minuses in any meaningful way, but if the Tennessee athletics department wants to do that -- and put it in writing -- I'm sure it will make for a nice read.

All I can say is this seems highly unlikely to me, but we'll see.

I just don't see this happening.

Tennessee is trying to avoid controversy. Following the Bruce Pearl stuff with basketball and Lane Kiffin staying just long enough to gett the football program on probation, I don't see them going after Tressel. Heck, they've even gone out of their way to avoid Bobby Petrino.

I've heard theses rumors and actually there are quite a few fans here who aren't aren't opposed to going after Tressel, which is funny to me because a lot of these same people were demonizing him and calling for OSU to get the death penalty a la SMU when the Tat stuff was coming out.

Agreed. They don't want anything to do with Tressel or Petrino for that very reason.

It's looking more and more like Charlie Strong is going to be the guy. I think he's probably been the front-runner all along, despite all the Gruden talk.

With Tennessee being on probation, they have to be one of the least likely to select Jim Tressel to coach their team with the show-cause hanging over his head.

don't see this happening either.  I don't think the NCAA wants to hear a case for JT being allowed to coach before his 5 year ban. They handed the penalty out and  seriously doubt that they are gonna change opinion unless new facts emerge.

I imagine Tennessee's show cause letter would be something like this:

Dear NCAA,

We suck.

Sincerely,

Volunteer Football

They've got their hands full with the stain that Kiffin and Pearl left on the program, the last thing they need is to hire a guy with a five year show-clause (regardless of the show-clause's stupidity).  No way.
