Assuming Carlos Hyde returns for his Senior year.
Depth Chart 2013 with Rod Smith = Carlos Hyde - Senior, Jordon Hall - RS Senior, Rod Smith - Senior, Bri'onte Dunn - Soph, Warren Bell - RS Freshman, then any Freshmen.
Depth Chart 2013 without Rod Smith = Carlos Hyde - Senior, Jordon Hall - RS Senior, Bri'onte Dunn - Soph, Warren Ball - RS Freshman, then any Freshmen.
Depth Chart 2014 with Rod Smith = Rod Smith - RS Senior, Bri'onte Dunn - Junior, Warren Ball - RS Soph, then any Sophomores and Freshmen.
If Hyde does decide to leave, if I'm Rod Smith I'd want to play in 2013 and compete with Jordon Hall.
This would be a move like Sabino did after his Junior year. Then this year in his RS Senior year he had a very prominate role.
Smith has shown flashes of brillance, but with Hyde and Hall coming back Smith's touches would be limited in his Senior Year. After a Red Shirt, Smith could be the MAN. With 4 years of experience and 2 years in Meyer's offence.
Considerations: Jordon Hall could be used as Slot instead of RB. It could be considered a self centered move, but definately the best for Smith personally. Sabino did this whenTressel was coach, how would Urban feel about the request? Miss playiing on a National Title contender in 2013, or is a National Title more likely in 2014 when Braxton is a Senior?
Thoughts?

Rod Smith is one of the most talented backs in the Big 10... Zero chance they red shirt him.
D. Anthony
You make it seem like he would get to choose whether to take a redshirt or not. Urban isn't gonna just push a guy back just because there appears to be a depth jam right now. In 2014 he'll just be competing with Elliott, Dunn, Ball, and possibly Jalen Hurd and others.
Smith won't get any favoritism in this offense. If he works to earn them, he'll get touches, and if he doesn't fumble when he gets those touches, he'll get more.
My man, Rod Smith was a Red Shirt sophomore this past year... We do have a pretty nice stable of running backs, tho.
Tom Crean listens to Nickelback...
He has already redshirted. Unless you plan on Tonya Harding-ing him or he takes over walking Jordan Hall's dog it's not really much of a thought.
Sabino CHOSE to take a Red Shirt after his Junior year, it was approved by Tressel. We don't know what Urban would think. If injuries occured there could be an agreement that Smith would burn the Red Shirt to help the team.
Sabino agreed to redshirt because he lost his job to A. Sweat, the redshirt was almost lifted late in the season when injuries depleted the depth.
my crystal ball says a warren ball transfer is coming soon, when Zeke passes him on the depth chart.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
Warren Ball transfer? I highly doubt he will ever transfer. He was the biggest die hard Buckeye in that 2012 class IMO. Even bigger fan that guys like Powell, Roberts, Washington, Perry & others.
Kid is a Buckeye through and through and through. Ball will get PT just not at the moment
#Buckeyes
He may be a diehard fan, but how much clout does that carry when you are buried at #5 on the depth chart?
~Because we couldn't go for three~
DUH....that solves the problem. I forgot Smith already was Red Shirted.
This thread can be eliminated.
Just watched the Nebraska game again. That TD run (where he broke 3 or 4 solid tackles on the way to a 30-some yard rushing TD), and the receiving TD against Illinois (I believe it was) combined with the amount of depth we've got a RB, makes you wonder if Smith is the sort of talent who largely goes unexplored (ala those RBs you see who you thought were okay in CFL, then suddenly burst on the scene in the NFL). The fumbling issue is a major one, but man, he had a couple runs in the few carries he had for OSU last year, that just made you salivate and wonder how deep his talent may actually go--and whether it will really ever get a chance to be showcased.
My boy Rod does not need to Redshirt next year. He's gonna be the biggest surprise in the B1G for the 2013 season.
The 2012 National Champions.
2013 Depth Chart @ RB looks like this:
Carlos Hyde
Jordan Hall
Rod Smith
Brionte Dunn
Warren Ball/Ezekial Elliot
w/ guys like Jalin Marshall & Tavion Jacobs possibly getting some reps.
Marshall, Jacobs, Hall & Elliot will most likely all see reps at the slot also.
Meyer has alot in store for OSU fans next year. He is bringing in some playmakers for 2013 & mostly our whole offense is back to have a year of experience under his offense.

no one has any idea what the 2013 depth chart looks like yet. But that would be mostly correct if based on seniority, yeah. But it won't be based on that.
Eh based on senority, but also based on on-field production. I think J. Hall and Marshall play more of the Percy Harvin role. I don' know how Zeke will do with the increase in competition, but unless someone has a great spring/fall camp that is how it is shaping up based on the production thus far.
no i didnt do it off seniority. I did it based off alot of things.
1. How I think it actually will be
2. Production and experience
3. just how I see it
I didnt base it off seniority. might be what you thought, but thats not the case. Looks like it, but you could say its based off seniority because the top 3 RBs are all upper classman. But its because Hyde, Hall & Smith are all good backs. Hyde will be a top 5 back in the country next year if he stays healthy. Hall is a good back, but is also good in the slot. Smith is very underrated in my mind. If Smith can hang on to the ball, he could be a top back in the country his senior year.
People dont realize how talented or RB stable is. Young guys like Dunn, Ball & Elliot w/ Marshall & Jacobs getting some PT throughout there careers. But the veterans in Hyde, Hall & Smith, which all 3 could be starters at 3/4 of most colleges. so I would say that it looks like its based off seniority because our upper classman are legit, but i based it off of production, experience & what i actually think the depth chart will be w/ no homerism.
#Buckeyes
You misunderstood me. I wasn't implying that you based it off of seniority. I was simply saying that it very well may be that exact depth chart at the start of the season, but you implied that it was concrete by saying "this is how the 2013 depth chart looks", which no one will know, including the staff themselves until that point in time.
no way he redshirts
there is a little thing called injuries to consider
I'm a friend of thunder is it any wonder lightning strikes me
ooooooooo YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Maybe it's just me but I was never impressed with Hall this season. He seemed too slow for a scat back and not big enough to run between the tackles. I think we will see more of the two back set with Smith and Hyde. I also think EZE will be hard to keep off of the field.. Also I really like what Dunn brings.. Damn, is football season yet?
He averaged 5.5 yards per attempt this past season on 40 attempts, and only had a long of 15 yards so thats even more impressive.
Agreed. Hall had some plays - runs or dump passes - where he went outside and he was quick at accelerating and could rip off 6 yards pretty easily. It's easy to overlook him because he played so little, but I think he can definitely be a weapon. Imagine how frustrated opposing defenses will be if we have multiple guys who can average 5 or 6 yards a touch (e.g. Hyde, Hall, Braxton, even possibly Marshall or others). This is precisely how FLorida waxed us in the 2007 NC game. It seemed like they didn't have any plays at all that gained less than 3 yards. And multiple guys did it for them. ANd I think Hall can be a solid weapon too.
He needs to hang on to the damm ball; the talent is there but ball security is his biggest problem.
"Fate has cards that it don't want to show"
With our RBs unable to stay healthy, we'll need the depth. I think one of the youngsters will redshirt, but he's too explosive a back to keep on the bench. I expect El Guapo to be the bell cow, Hall to be primarily in the slot, and Smith to be in when we go to 21 personnel. He's also more versatile in the pass game than Hyde. Besides, he was a RS Soph this year. Hyde is gone after 2013, and I think Rod has what it takes to be a feature back his Senior year.

Smith will be jr next yr so his sr yr he'll prob be featured

Each of the last 2 years there have been times where our "deep" RB pool got dangerously thin. So while we'll have Hyde, Hall, Smith, Dunn, Elliot, and Ball, there's no way to know if we'll need them all or not. Hyde is the hammer, if he goes down then Smith will be the featured back. If Smith can't hold onto the ball again next year, he could get passed up by Dunn. Who knows what will happen, but I imagine Smith will see a fair amount of carries next year.
Yea....Smith is a year younger than Hyde so they are not both Seniors next year
Let this thread die...
Full disclosure, I logged in just to down vote this post. BUT, I hope Rod Smith is training his ass off right now just chomping at the bit and ready to show us how beastly he is this year.
Umm guys just to let you all know, it's still not for certain that Hall is coming back. A final decision on bringing him back on a medical redshirt hasn't been decided yet
According to Hall's twitter he has already been approved for it. Also as others have stated it doesn't really matter. Rod Smith will be a redshirt junior next year not a senior. Also Hall will play the Utility role or more famously named, "Percy Harvin role." Hyde and Smith will be primary ball carriers as long Smith can still hold off Dunn from carry's. The offseason is whats really going to decide every persons fate as far as touches and the work they put into being a great player. urban has showed time and again that whatever player puts for the effort before and during the season will get chances. I think Marshall and EZE are going to be hall's understudy for the utility role as well because of their skill sets. Just my opinion though except for the Hall twitter thing and Rod Smith's current status as a redshirt junior.
Smith has shown flashes of brilliance, but until he learns to hold onto the ball, I'm not as enthusiastic about him as others.

Hall will not be playing a lot of RB IMO....more slot and H back type role....
OK so Hall has been approved for the medical redshirt, but I don't believe he's made the decision if he will accept it yet and come back
I don't see how he has a choice if he hopes to get drafted.
Except for the part where he was asked on twitter if he was coming back and he said yeah
Hoping Smith turns the corner this spring and lives up to his potental if so he will get plenty of touches
After watching all of those re-plays from this season yesterday on B1G Network, Rod impressed me with his nastiness. I think he could really improve his production next season. He certainly has the skills. I agree with the earlier post on his similarities to Beanie Wells. They are very similar in size and running style. I personally think that Rod is more potent and productive than Jordan Hall. To me, he really wasn't the same after coming back from his injury.....he just didn't seem like a game breaker to me.
