My roomate told me that his uncle, an NFL and NCAAF college coach agent, thinks that Roby will declare for the draft. He said that while he doesn't think he should go, he thinks that he will end up declaring. Don't know if he has any actual info, or just his intuition, but take it FWIW. (the guy represents some coaches on the OSU staff)

I hope it definitely is a rumor with no basis. The Bucks will need his experience in the secondary to go along with the freshman class coming in. The incoming class will be awesome but you can't do it without leadership.
Think he will be a consensus All American next year, with a shot at the Thorpe if he stays. Malcolm Jenkins should give him a call. He still needs to refine a few things to become the elite type of CB that can play at a high level immediately in the NFL and the best place to do that is at the college level. If he goes, no surprise, but thinking objectively, I think he needs more time.
It's a very good thing that Burrows and Woodard are enrolling early then... If I were him I'd only leave if I was projected in the 1st round. He also has the option to do what AJ Hawk did. Hawk went through the combine then came back.
Not sure you can do that anymore. Players have to decide by mid January if they are leaving and the Combine is in February.
The only thing that worries me about Roby declaring is his personality. Now, I don't claim to know the guy or anything, but it's been mentioned many a time by the coaches that the guy is just brimming with confidence (Hell, Coombs has mentioned that he can't handle cornerbacks that aren't like this); he thinks that he can do it all. Fick mentioned this when he was discussing Roby's desire to be a two-way player; he wants to do it all right now, but needs to focus on mastering his position.
Kid's got the raw athletic ability to succeed in the League, he just needs to work on his coverage ability. He's got serious top-15 potential--and with the restrictions being placed on rookie salaries, he's got an incentive to raise his stock as high as he can.
As a side note, another cause for concern is that the NFL doesn't normally draft on skill, they draft on talent and potential. Roby may be unpolished (and can't necessarily contribute off the bat), but he has tremendous upside, which will really raise his stock in a DB-weak draft.
agreed with hodge and Fromthe18.... one more year = major boost, but then you gotta look at the risk of injury in college, which I hate when people bring up, but is a real possibility. Pros and cons weighted, 1 more year refining those skills that were mentioned by posters before me is going to increase his stock considerably and make him a much better player for it. Either way, I am rooting for him. Hope he stays though, for his sake and mine.
Roby gets projected into the first round before the cutoff date I think he's a goner. Hate to say that as I agree with what Ross said during his year-end defensive breakdown that the 2013 defense will be ok WITH Roby back there, but will take a big hit if he leaves, especially on defense of the edge and against spread teams. Losing him could cause the defense to regress next year :(

Also, guys are assuming that he wants to be a first round pick and only a first round pick. Roby might be cool with 3rd round money because a 3rd rounder is still an NFL football player making serious cheddar. That's the part some of the optimisim gets hung up on. Yes he can improve his draft stock, but with the exception of QB, no stars fall faster than those of corners-he could concievably hurt it next year too.
I expect Roby to be gone. The guy is a physical cover corner not afraid to tackle. Every NFL team wants them.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Agreed. He shouldn't go, but he will.
And I wouldn't be surprised to see Hyde leave, either.
I am actually on the side that I think he would be smart to go based on strength of the class and the opportunity to land with a good team that needs him than a bad team that desperately needs him. I think he will get a 1st or 2nd round draft and he would more than likely go to a good team like say San Fran that has aging DBs or the giants who are thin there too.
but I am also on the side that thinks he won't go because even with all his confidence, he knows what is best for him and his education on the field. He will stay. Only player I see actually leaving early is Hankins, unless a player gets stupid and makes a wrong move like say Bryant or Barnett!
i would like for the browns to pick him up.... opposite Joe Haden.... I would love that
Hey I would love to have him on my Chiefs opposite Brandon Flowers. Although I think Jonathan Banks would fit better because we need a big CB since Flowers is pretty small. But I would take Roby any day.
but my point was that if Roby could avoid our teams, he might be better off coming out this year to be picked by better teams and grow with them than try to be the sole best player on perennial losers, unfortunately!
I also would love for Simon to actually fall to 3rd round and have my Chiefs take him there even though I think it won't happen. We need a good end/pass rusher to go with Hali and Houston and a good leader even moreso. KC has talented defense, no true leadership.
yea ia gree, just wishful thinking on my part. Browns defense is pretty good, just our offense cant get going. At least we picked up trent richardson, and still got joe thomas and alex mack, so gotta build around them before joe thomas' career is up.... damn these offensive woes (except for last weeks 30 point outburst.... sorry squirrelmaster, I know that comes at your expense with KC)
There's no way that Roby goes pro after this year, he's not ready in my mind. I'd love for the Browns to get another corner to go opposite Haden, or pick an OLB like Jarvis Jones, or pick Bjoern Werner from FSU and have him opposite Sheard. The Browns need some OGs offensively, and a veteran WR.
Hey - another Chiefs fan! Haha. I wish Andrew Luck/RGIII were coming out this year instead of last, as our QB situation is shaky at best.
To your point on good players being drafted by losing teams; I totally agree. The list is incredibly long of really good college players who never panned out in the NFL due to being drafted by a team not focused on player development. I guess you could draw a parallel to Bollman's tenure at OSU and all of the 5* O-line talent we wasted...
Regardless, I really hope Roby comes back next year and helps lead the team to the NC!
Nothing against Roby, but I was discussing the draft with my buddy who is a Browns fan, and proposed the idea of Cleveland drafting Dee Milliner out of Bama. He and Haden on patrol would be nasty.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

While the pass rush has been better than years past, the pass rush needs addressed before CB
I disagree. This year they've shown that when the whole secondary steps up, the line gets coverage sacks from the tackles. Parker, Sheard, Rubin, Taylor, and Rucker have been formidable in this regard. Buster Skrine is a cancer at times though, and a replacement for him and a geriatric Sheldon Brown, I think, is more important.
Millner is a monster DB, think he projects better for the NFL than Roby, be a solid pick up.
I agree. I think Millner would be more "ready" as far as analysts see things, whereas Roby would be a pick based on athleticism and potential. I don't think Roby currently stands out amongst DBs the same way that Big Hank stands out with D-linemen, and given the fickle nature of draft analysts, I can see Roby being projected anywhere from late first round to late, late second round. If he hears enough of the latter, I think he may be persuaded to stay. I love him, but I think he needs another year.
I hope he stays, but feel he is gone. I think our run to the MNC takes a huge hit if Roby leaves. We need some Doss type leaders to step up and for go the almighty dollar for the chance of doing something really special. You can't blame the guys that do leave early, I completely understand.
But that is why you recruit. As good as Roby is and as hard as Hankins appears to be to replace, this time next year we could all be saying how lucky we are as fans to cheer for Washington or Schutt for at least another year. I would worry immediatley about the defense if Roby goes though. OSU will have lost all 4 regular starting linemen, Sabino and Boren, Howard and Roby. That's 8 'starters'. The LB depth worries me as OSU will have to lean on youth and\or uncerainty somewhere if teams key on Shazier (as they should) and without Hankins and Simon to draw attention, teams might be able to get out to the second level and attack the weakness of this team-the LB corps.
Now Washington appears to be a nice fit and another year under Coach Mick should only benefit he and Spence-Schutt sort of looks like one of those guys who will give you 3 years of solid play but never be a focal point of the defense but that's ok. If he and Washington are your tackles, that's a lot of size and athleticism. The schedule sets up nicely but the loss of Roby would really worry me only because replacing 7 starters sounds SO much better than 8.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
pretty much anytime an OP's friend's extended family member is quoted, it's 100% hot garbage.
sorry you feel that way again told you to take it for what its worth
I'm staying selfishly optimistic and saying he stays...
Ro-Ro: please stay, brother! You will be the man. You may get drafted in like the 3rd round this year....but, if you stay another year. You will be more polished for the scouts, and I bet you get drafted in the top 1/2 of the first round...that is BIG $ Plus you get a legitimate shot at a national championship ring!
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
FWIW, 247 Boarding House says that Roby will put his name in to see where he would get drafted but that he is leaning towards staying right now.
I think he stays one more year.
That is all...
hes gone and Hyde is 50/50
and good for both of them
ask Matt Barkley about staying to go after that National Championship when he ends up in the late second round
I'm a friend of thunder is it any wonder lightning strikes me
I like El Guapo a lot, but if he's actually "50/50" on declaring for the draft he really needs to get some better advisors around him.
In my opinion there's 15 or more RB's ahead of him in this draft.
For every guy who stays & has a bad year - their's a guy that stays & has a great year. Mike Doss for instance. I for one am hoping he comes back. Mostly for selfish reasons but nonetheless I want to see him with one more year as a Buckeye. He could end up being one of the best ever at the position & we've had some great ones..

I'm not worried one bit......we RELOAD @ tOSU! There's always another stud waiting to get his shot! I guarantee the younger guys won't mind if Roby & Hyde go. There are guys ready to show what they have & freshmen like Zeke, Cam & Eli who wanna play right away.
He might go if his NFL piece of paper says "you could go as high as 2nd (or even 1st) round!!" The wording is such that it encourages guys to leave early. He is a borderline case though. He may have improved his stock enough to warrant leaving. He will probably test well at the combine so if his stock right now says 2nd round (average projection rather than "as high as"), he should probably go.
Roby is staying mark it down havent heard anything on Hyde yet.
All I have heard Roby say regarding the subject is that he wants to be one of the great CBs in OSU history. He needs another year, without question. And the mention of Hyde is ridiculous.
Carlos Hyde isn't ready IMHO. He has so much he can accomplish next year & they same can be said for Bradley Roby. Come on fellas, come back & be apart of what can be a VERY SPECIAL year!!!
Shendig
Insiders close to and around the program are very confident Roby will be back again havent heard about Hyde but id be surprised if he went. Now if Hyde had been a multi-year starter and taken alot more hits than he has then I can see him going but theres just not enough tape on him for scouts yet.
I was reading somewhere that both Hankins and Roby put in paperwork for the NFL and of course Hankins as a 1st rd pick and Roby was a 2nd rounder... not even in Mel Kipers top 5 underclass CBs. But Kipers an idiot. Anyways, hopefully he'll come back so he can grade out and go in the 1st round... as well as win a national championship before he goes
Any update?
Roby could play himself into the top 10 next season especially if he rips off a sub 4.4 at the combine. Hyde on the other hand may be better off this year with Lattimore's injury and the chance that someone falls in love with him when he rips off a 4.4 range at 240 lbs and watches his pass protection on film. Next year Hyde could end up splitting carries with a phenom like Zeke or a rejuvenated Hall even though Hyde is the solidified starter.
i last read a tweet - a few days ago?- that Roby had not made a descion yet and was still weighing all his options.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
If he does, I hope that he falls to the browns in the 3rd, but it's a weak cb class so we'll never know
/Duff'd It
With the rookie salary cap, I would just like to point out that it doesn't mean nearly as much to be a top 10 pick in the draft. It meant millions and millions of dollars before, but not so much now. The key is getting in the league and proving your worth. The ONLY reason to stay in school would be if he felt he wasn't ready to prove his worth at the next level.
Things that really don't matter:
- Weak DB class. Irrelevant. It doesn't matter if you get drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round. You have to make the squad and earn a starting position either way if you eventually want to be one of the highest paid players at your position.
- Winning a national championship. Too many factors over which you have no control. Ask Matt Leinart. Ask Matt Barkley. Ask Mike Hart, Jake Long, James Laurinaitis. Unless you REALLY REALLY like college, this doesn't matter. Nothing is guaranteed.
- Getting a degree. You can always come back and get a degree. Most of these guys come to Ohio State to major in football, which I assure you can be a far more lucrative major than journalism, political science, or even engineering. If you're going to be drafted in the NFL, that's your graduation. And if you're still concerned about getting a degree, come back and get one. Nothing is stopping you.
This^^^^ Great points and I'm sure these are the "options" Roby's weighing right now. I just really hope he stays...would be a great guy for Cam, Eli and others at DB could learn so much from him. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Haven't heard much from Roby or Hyde...personally think we need their leadership next year (and yes...I'm being very selfish at the same time;-)

I like roby. Kid is headed the right way towards being a lockdown cover corner. As is, teams tend to stay away from his side of the field. Id base that more off the fact howard was a much easier target. Think he needs to come back. He had a tendency to leave guys wide open and be able to recover nicely and make a play on the ball. His cover skills needs some refining...but damn is he fast. His ability to recover after he bites on a move is uncanny. Most of his best plays came after he had bit on a move, or someone blew a coverage and he had to sell out and make a play to negate the wide open receiver. That's his athleticism...guys a phenomenal athlete. With the ability to become a true lockdown corner and establish himself as the best DB in the country next year. That's just my 2 cents...roby needs another year to refine his cover skills...lord knows he exhibits great ball skills and recovery skills.
I don't know fellas, the kid seems to me to be pretty damn good. He has the best recovery in college football, he is fast as hell, has good fluid hips and quickness, he is not afraid to get physical, he has good hands, he has good instincts, he takes well to coaching. The kid definitely does not "need" another year, barring horrific injury, it probably wouldn't hurt him, but just because the awards makers didn't notice, doesn't mean that the NFL won't. The kid is one of the best CB's in college football, and we have been lucky as hell to have him. I wish we had him for one more year too, but lets not pretend that it is for his benefit.
I think it would benefit him actually. As you said he has the best RECOVERY in college football. The reason we know that is because he was having to recover quite a bit this year. NFL quarterbacks won't give him the chance to recover as much, and I think he needs to learn to not be out of position quite so often before he should head to the league. Don't get me wrong, he's a great corner, but I'm not sure he's quite ready to be a star in the NFL
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
