UPDATE 10:36 a.m. ET: Per KCTV, one shooting occurred at the facility and a related shooting occurred elsewhere. A player reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend then drove to practice facility and shot himself there.
Update: It was Jovan Belcher. Starting middle LB for the Chiefs for the last three seasons. He reportedly shot and killed his GF and then drove to the facility and shot himself.
And no, it will never stop because we are human and have problems no matter the fame level. It is sad, but it happens all the time to every group of people, football players included.
Update: Reportedly (according to ESPN980) he may have been confronted by Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli who tried to talk to him and then killed himself in front of them.
My heart breaks for his mother, who supposedly saw him shoot and kill his girlfriend in front of her and his 3 month old daughter. His mother will live with that for the rest of her life all while raising his child now.
I don't know....maybe I'm in the minority here, and I do agree that this is a sad, senseless tragedy, but this guy is a coward.
He shot his girlfriend then himself. Put yourself in the girlfriend's family's shoes. Your daughter was just murdered by someone. And now, I guarantee the talking heads over at ESPN will blame this on the violence of football and concussions within a week. Bob Ley will have some so-called experts on the Outside The Lines discussing how football is to blame for this, and we need to soften the sports, and we'll get the usual psychobabble regarding how the sport of football is to blame for this. Watch.
Suicide is never the option. It's sad that he took his own life - yes - and I would have had sympathy for the young man...but that he murdered his girlfriend before? No excuse for that, and now he dies a murdering coward. Harsh, but true.
It is harsh, but I have to agree here. I just wonder what in the hell happened to him? I saw a picture on a site I was reading (Deadspin I think) where he tweeted a picture of himself, his girlfriend, and his child saying "Happy Thanksgiving from our family to you". One can only wonder what went wrong in the past 24 hours, or maybe further back, that led to this. I'm sure there will at least be a discussion on how this relates to concussions, but I don't know. Depends on how many concussions he's had, I guess...
Lots of emotions lead up to this, no one IMO can judge his mental state. There clearly was a lot going on there to drive him to the state where he could committ such an act. I have sympathy deeply for her family and his, but I alos have sympathy for him the potential state he was in. I cannot judge him because I do not know and neither does anyone here.
I'm with you, Bucks. Why do people always have to take an innocent life? Park the car in the garage, jump off the bridge, etc. but please leave the bystanders alone.

Exactly, CAJUN --- I don't know people have to bring those around them down with them, and then forever damage their children's life at the same time.
Maybe it's my disdain for the media or something...but anytime there is a senseless tragedy like this --- it seems they give the person at fault the most attention. ESPN has their breaking news every 9 seconds on the tickers about this. They then follow it up with a blurb about how the Panthers will still make the trip for the game? Why wouldn't they?
The media always wants to find somebody to blame, too. In the end, the person to blame the most, i.e.: the murderer, or that nutjob who shot up a Colorado movie theater over the Summer - are passed over for some social issue. In this case, the social issue to blame will be how concussions made this guy murder his wife, and them himself. Not him, it will be concussions, (and probably guns). They will shape that into their agenda. Guaranteed.
i dont know if this is was a premeditated murder suicide, a fight had occurred, he lost his mind basically, once he killed her, he probably clicked to him that his life was basically over and he then decided he kill himself....
more than one senario than what some people are saying
Yes, I definitely think they should & I don't get why ESPN keeps talking about whether they should play the game or not. I just hope there's not any kind of memorial to this murderer.
Haven't been able to watch much sports this weekend. Yesterday I heard the story and as a Chiefs fan it was troubling. Didn't hear that it was Belcher till later in the afternoon. Very sad story. The guy did nothing but work his ass off to become a starter in the NFL. He was the equivalent of a 2* starting at OSU at linebacker. Hard worker, tough player. I liked him alot.
Tough to be a chiefs fan right now. I really feel for Crennel and Pioli! and even moreso for the families and the daughter.
Just saw this.

This is absolutely terrible news.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the family of the girlfriend. the guy was only 25...kind of puts things in perspective. Sad
This kind of stuff is always crazy to hear about. You just never know what's going on in other people's lives. Sad story.
He was my age. Horrible story. It does put a lot in perspective. Thoughts with their families and with the Chiefs organization.
Class of 2010.
he went to college at UMaine up in my neck of the woods...sad news...
this is becoming so common with these football players taking thier own lives...
3 off the top of my head this past year

Very sad...

Belcher was the guy, linebacker. Shot girlfriend, drove to stadium talked to coach and another official than shot himself.
Pay It Forward!
VERY tragic news! Makes your stomach turn. My heart breaks for his little daughter that is left parentless.

could we have seen a second chris benoit like situation on our hands?
my heart goes out to the chefs orginization, Romeo Crennel, and Scott Pioli.
i am glad he didn't murder his daughter though. my thoughts go out to her also
thats crazy.... i feel for their families and the coach and GM who witnessed the suicide!! i couldnt imagine seeing that in person
This is terrible. My heart is broken over this. Man, I don't even know what to say. Tragic.
I read that the Chiefs are still going to play their game tomorrow. Do you guys think they should still be playing their game?
Yes, I definitely think they should & I don't get why ESPN keeps talking about whether they should play the game or not. I just hope there's not any kind of memorial to this murderer.

Surely this is tragic for both families. But I hope that the Chiefs don't decide to honer this guy somehow; after all, he is a murderer.
