This according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Coach Ault Served as Head Coach at Nevada-Reno for 28yrs. He was able to compile an overall record of 233-109-1 with 16 post season berths that include 10 bowl games in 12 years as a Bowl-Subdivision team. He was able to guide the Nevada program's growth from Div. II to FCS (I-AA) and now FBS status.
Widely considered the inventor of the pistol offense Ault was the only active Division I coach in the College Football Hall of Fame.

There are rumors that if the Browns hire the 49ers current offensive coordinator (Chris long I think?) then Ault could be hired as the new OC and reunited with Kaepernick. This was on a local Cleveland radio station so who knows if this has any legs to it or not. Just thought I would share
I think if Ault wouldve been about 15-20 yrs younger he would've been a great candidate at Wisconsin assuming he would've left his Alma-Mater.

Coach Ault did a fine job in relative obscurity for many years. That bowl loss this year to Arizona had to be very painful but am sure this decision had been in the works long before then. Go Bucks!
The Creator of the Pistol Offense. Great Coach. Great Offensive Mind. College Football Will Miss Him.
Living in Nevada, I've had the pleasure of watching his extremely innovative offense run down many a hapless opponent. As a Buckeye fan, I love me some downhill smashmouth football, and that's what UNR football was designed to do. Too bad Ault never had a good DC other than Andy Buh (now at Cal). If he had a D that could help out his O even a tad, the Wolfpack would have been an annual BCS buster.

Good thread to acknowledge this guy. 28 years at one school (didn't read the article... did he have a hiatus in there?)... something we'll probably never see again...
Yes he did, actually. The article stated that Ault served as Nevada's AD from 1986-2004. And as the Head Coach from 1976-1992, 1994-96, and then from 2004-present. So I'm just assuming that he tried to focus on the Athletic Director job full time during the time away, but did not want to let his Alma Mater's football program slip from what he, himself was able to build it up to.
