I know tOSU misses out on all those extra practices because of the bowl ban, but during the offseason is any contact allowed between players and coaches? Is Tom Herman allowed to work with Braxton? Are they allowed to talk, but not meet in person? I'm sure the Buckeyes are doing everything they can, and everyone will be working with Mick, but just curious if anyone knows what the exact rules are. I'm picturing Brax and Herman playing Go against each other, and watching Saints tapes from last season...

I'm not 100% sure, but I do not think "coaching" is allowed until spring. IIRC, Urban said that the last time he'd see the team (excluding the 12-0 ceremony and end of season banquet) was the Tuesday after The Game for a team meeting. I think he said that the players can work out and do football related activities, but coaches can't be there.

I believe you are correct Hail! It's the same as in high school. Your allowed to practice as long as it is not an organized practice by the coach's. It has to be voluntary workouts.
Are you sure those are high school rules? If I'm remembering correctly, we couldn't do anything organized with the coaches that directly applied to the sport, but our head coach ran conditioning and workouts through the year. If that's the case, then it would seem like Mickey Marotti would be able to work with the guys all year long, but maybe he's not actually considered a "coach" in the eyes of the NCAA.
I'm referring to open gyms and things of that nature. We also had voluntary workouts in the offseason where we did alot of conditioning. Also, you are allowed to go to basketball camps that are run by other schools as a team. However the OHSAA rules were that you could not have your head coach organize the practices to be "MANDATORY." And as far as Marotti is concerned, I believe the same rules apply because those workouts aren't mandatory either. They are voluntary. It's different in different states. In Texas where I coached, you could have "practices" under the guise that it was gym class. In Illinois they play basketball year round under a different set of rules. Thats why Chicago area kids are usually much more advanced in basketball.
The rules may have changed for Ohio however sense I played back in 92-96
Edit: Sorry, I guess I didn't make that clear in that the coach's aren't allowed to "coach." However they are allowed to be present. If I remember correctly, you can't post that there is a practice either. It has to be by word of mouth that there is a voluntary practice. To be honest, it's splitting hairs as to how you can and can't practice.
Ok then I agree with you there. But everyone knows "voluntary" practice means "you don't have to come, but if you don't come you don't play" haha
That depends on how good you are and if your the coach's son!...lol But for the most part, you are right!
They can not coach them in any practice or work out. However, they can meet with them individually for other reasons - one example is that the new compliance measures at OSU require the athletes to have their own checking accounts and have them reviewed by a supervisor. If you reference the 11W article on that it points out that the supervisors are, indeed, coaches - not compliance staff members. There are other examples of permissible contact, but no coaching is allowed.
Voluntary workouts and contact with players but no coaching is all they usually ever allow once the season is over. In OSU's case they'll probably be extra cautious this season because there will surely be people trying to put stories out to try and put a bad light on Urban and his staff coaching when they shouldn't.

thanks Jester...I'll stick with it though. Some people are just too sensitive. It was just a little joke, that's all.
sensitive about a childs life ruined and scarred for life? Maybe it's the father in me that just doesn't understand your logic.

Duuuude, exactly where did I make a joke about a child. I don't see that. Show me where. I was making fun of the Penn State phonies, i.e. Sandusky, Bradley, Johnson, Paterno, etc.. The coaches. Nice try jack. You took it the wrong way. Or just red herring tactics
