I really hope he picks OSU and I dont think his parents not being on the visit would make a difference because its his decision, but doesnt his dad do all his interviews and told him not to commit to OSU back in the summer and to take some time to take visits?
I think it will make a difference. He's admitted to not wanting to pick a school that he hasn't seen, and alluded that he wanted his parents to see the school that he picked for their approval. I definitely think we're still in it, but to answer OPs question, there is cause for concern.
Sadly, I think if you took a correlation test examining the relationship between overly involved parents and sports stars, the results would be pretty high.
That probably applies more to the sports that take a larger investment of money over time, rather than football, but it definitely exists across the board.
I'm thinking a helicopter parent would have brought his son on his official visit and would have expected to spend the entire time with him. In this case it seems that the Mike's parents are giving their kid a little credit for being able to make decisions on his own. I don't expect a commit until he gets home and talks it over with mom and dad but I don't think it is a bad sign that his parents are trusting him to make a visit away from home on his own.
I think location is the big worry for his parents. Imagine trying to travel everywhere for 2 kids who are sports studs. I'm sure it is a cause for concern for the parents. In the end, it's Mike's decision tho.
Dublin is actually substantially wealthier than Plano in terms of median income, however Plano is much larger, which makes its relatively low poverty level quite impressive.
I visit Plano a lot for work. One of my favorite places to travel to for business. If I lived there, it would be very difficult to adjust to Dublin. Plano>>>>>>Dublin in just about every way.
There are plenty of nasty places on the east side of Plano. Plus, Plano is a suburb with most people commuting into Dallas. The traffic getting to/from Plano and Dallas is waaaaaaay worse than going from Dublin to/from downtown C-bus. I would actually take Plano over Dublin because of the horrific traffic. Each to his own!
Mike's parents have met the staff on more than one occasion, so I'm not that concerned that he's visiting alone this weekend. He has said tOSU leads for some time now, so I'd imagine he's talked to his parents quite a bit about this. I think his Dad simply wanted Mike to visit before committing to a specific school, so I'm optimistic that this weekend will seal the deal for him.
maybe his dad said this to mike. "Well Mike, if you wanna go to school out there, i'm staying here and you can see how you like it how there without us because we wont be there to hold your hand like we do now." theorys
I don't have a problem with this. We dropped our kids off for weekends with friends at colleges that they were interested in- otherwise, how is a kid going to be able to figure out if the vibe is right at a certain school without mumsy and daddy traipsing close behind? Better to let him figure it out on his own. After all, Mike would be farther away from home and family than most, where hopping in the car for a 2.5 hour drive home is not an option.
It was my daughter's (OOS, not midwestern) happy discovery that most students at OSU are quite friendly, and don't come with a certain built-in regional snobbery.
I hope that the other commits and the staff make him feel that he would be happy, comfortable, and excel here, moreso than any other university. I'm sure they will have him talking to other commits/members of the team who are from the South to let him know that it can be done, and done well at OSU.
I wouldnt be too worried. I believe the reason he didnt commit earlier is his parents wanted HIM to see the school he was visiting before making a decision. Osu has always been his leader even with visiting all the other schools.
I think the real story is HE'S ON HIS WAY TO COLUMBUS! He finally will be visiting the campus. That is big news and could mean a gray box will be coming soon whether it be him, Conley or someone else.
We need just a nice little gray box that says 18 on it. That is all. Not hoping for anything more.
Hopefully we roll out the red carpet and hopefully he's able to make his own choices in picking his schooling. Especially a scholarship! Parents aren't paying for it, ya they will probably help him financially in his endeavors with college life but free schooling at a great university should be all his decision
Parents or not it is only GREAT news that Mike is visiting and will have plenty of time with Meyer and company! Just having him on campus and the fact Urb will be talking face to face and giving him the we need LB's talk should hopefully be enough. Everyone has been worried since he made visits elsewhere but I think we should relax and let it play out considering Meyer is a closer and the 11W staff have been writing as if Mitchell is almost a lock to tOSU.
Have to view it as though he already knows what he wants and this look is to verify his desires to himself. Parents sent him off saying make your decision. Amazing how paranoid some are. Have faith not fear.
I think the fact that they play different sports works in OSUs favor...I also read somewhere that they would like to go to the same school if possible. Not a lot of schools out there where you can compete for an NC in BBall & FBall...
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
Don't about the rest of you guys, but if my Dad was telling me where to go based on what he wanted, I'd probably go somewhere he didn't just to begin my independence. I've known alot of jock dad's in my life and they still see themselves playing in their son's bodies.
Hope the kid makes the best decision for himself and is happy wherever he decides to go whether it be to TOSU or the other schools he's considering.
I get what you are saying, but I think that it could also just be a case of the parents having a lot of other kids and wanting him to stay close because they know it is the only way they would get to see him play. We'll see if it turns out that way.
If I had 7 siblings though I would want to get far away just for some peace and quiet.
So glad he's finally going to be on campus now we just have to let urban "do work". Word from recruiting guys is that Mitchell is not just and athlete playing football but that know he's a football player thats an athlete. Would love to have a 4.3 forty LB in scarlett in grey.
I thinking being on campus with Urban, the staff, and other 2013 commits will entice Mitchell. He has been high on OSU from the beginning and I believe his official visit is just a way to confirm OSU is where he wants to be.
I wonder if Conley committing means he can stay for the festivities for tonight? I read that he wasn't originally allowed to be there because of restrictions of time a recruit can visit for
Also, guys, think of it this way... Mike Mitchell is 17 and his parents are letting him travel alone to Columbus as a grown man to make a grown man decision. I think it shows he is mature enough to make his own life decisions. I don't think he parents not going is a big deal, especially because he has so many younger siblings.
However, he may wait until he gets home to Texas to talk to his parents in person about committing... or he could just talk to them on the phone about it and commit on the spot. Still a lot of speculation. The simple fact he is making it to campus is a very important one.
I hope Mike is a Buckeye, but I am a little concerned. Wed morning the 247 folks were on the Bill King show talking about recruiting. They seemed to think Mike had cooled down on OSU and would stay close to home. They also mentioned his dad is involved with his siblings sports and not big on Mike going so far from home. I hope they are wrong, but they sounded confident in their knowledge of Mike's recruitment process.
Come on Mr. Mitchell, come on over to the good guys!!Think the pep rally tonight seals the deal for him.Plus we have a lot of commits and future prospects their today!!Only plusses in my book!!
If he had really cooled on Ohio State, then why make the trip? He's already cancelled a trip here a few times before, or he was going to take the trip but had scheduling confilcts etc. I think just the fact that he is making it to campus for a visit speaks more to Ohio State's chances more than some dudes from a recruiting website speculating.
Agreed. And don't forget, Urban Meyer is a human microwave. If a recruit is cooling on OSU, just stick that hotpocket back in the Meyerwave and its ready to go.
FYI Mitchells dad has a current condition where he is not able to fly at the moment hence why he isnt with Mike. Mike is coming to visit his school of choice and spend time with all his close buddies aka the commits we had out at The Opening this year before making it official for the good guys.
I see this visit as completely positive. Kid has wanted to come to OSU for a while & has basically said as much...The fact that he's there, with or without parents, seems to me to be a step in the right direction. In fact it could be that he wanted to come & visit pretty badly & although he seems to respect his father a good deal, was not going to let the fact that his dad couldn't make it deter him from visiting. Good things...
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
I don't ever think any kid is a lock, but he's wanted to be a Buckeye from day one so seeing campus and all of the other things live should seal this deal unless there's something we don't know.
All I know is that I REALLY hope he chooses OSU! The anticipation is killing me! I think this could be a catalyst for a extremely strong finish the recruiting class!
Is it weird that I am more concerned about him visiting in December because of the weather than anything else? I always worry with kids coming from warm climates coming to visit when it is freezing here. Somehow I think if they visit in the warmer months it will slip thier minds that it is snowing here in December lol.
Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!
Very possible I have no doubts about Mitchell. Alex and Co. have been all over his recruitment for awhile now. Plus Malzahn firing Thigpen brings us very very close to nabbing Johnson as well. Looking back on things when we lost 2 lb committs earlier if you wouldve told me wed end up with Mitchell and Johnson id think it would be too good to be true. But here we are about to make it happen it just shows how good and relentless Urban is :)
I think the reason for so much speculation that Mike will be a Buckeye is because tOSU is the school he always mentions being his number 1... I can't imagine as a parent trying to influence where my kid would go other than what feels right to them. My dad was a tOSU alumni, and I felt more comfortable at a smaller school... I'm sure he wanted me to go to his alma mater, but knew some people thrive in different environments. Hopefully Mike is a Buckeye in the next day or three!
I realize not a lot of people take Michael Chung at OZone seriously (I've heard a few people here say they think his info is BS), but I thought I'd post anyway for those curious (I don't see him post incorrect information very often, myself):
"Michael Chung @MChungOZone
Source believes news on Mitchell will be good but cannot divluge any info per Mitchell's personal request. Mitchell will announce when ready
Expand
1h Michael Chung Michael Chung @MChungOZone
A source close to Ohio State feels good about Mike Mitchell and how Mitchell feels about OSU. Mitchell will let people know when he is ready"
Technically not news (nor did I claim it was). Felt it was worth posting based on the fact that the 247 guys recently said that Mitchell had supposedly cooled on OSU (which was mentioned a few times earlier in this thread), whereas Chung's take/"source" tends to side with the idea that we've been hearing for awhile, which is that OSU is Mitchell's favorite and a commitment to OSU may come soon.
I agree and with that. Also with skai Moore saying he isn't interested in osu any more because of the lack of communication from osu, the staff must feel good about a lb or two

Just wanted to let you guys know I'm hearing really good things about Mike Mitchell's visit to Columbus. Can't say more right now, but things are looking good.
He was there... I believe one of the 11W guys tweeted a pic of him in the bleachers last night. I think he is supposed to be in Columbus until tomorrow.
Hearing the visit going really well...Thad also got his pitch in to Mickey via Mike after the hoops game when Fickell brought Mike into the locker room after the game
It definitely has been encouraging to hear the good news all weekend. Hopefully he doesn't wait too long. I'd like to see us get some more players locked up here, specifically Mitchell and Trey. I know that may be a little bit, but it'd be nice to get these guys committed.
Well since it was approximately minutes after I wished for #18 to commit (on the Vonn Bell blog) and Conley announced his commitment, I am wishing to hear about #19 today!
and Mickey better follow his brother because the basketbucks are going to be a good team too! They could possibly be NC in both football and basketball at some point in their careers.
in terms of the double national title appearance happening, Next year is the best chance assuming both teams stay healthy (knock on wood)... Basketball bucks will do some damage next year but having this team get a ton of experience and come back next year with esentially the same team, i think we have a good shot at a Football national title (at least be in the conversation for one) and a basketball one in the same year...be interesting because Urban had this happen at Florida too.
I'll try it again tomorrow and hope for Mike Mitchell specifically. Once a day seems like enough for now. Never would have thought it would have been Munger though. Not going to complain though. The gift is real!
Have you actually watched the games the last couple years. Lenzelle is a good player but doenst have even close to the scoring ability of Thomas. He has had a couple good nights but not consistantly. Thomas is a elite scorer. His scoring is not simply replaced by a average streak shooter.
I'm not sure they will be able to replace Thomas in the sense of having an all american type go to offensive weapon. The best case scenario has Q stepping into the leading scorer role, and the other guys continuing to improve and pick up some of the slack. That assumes that Q will be back next year, which is TBD.
and don't forget about Ross next year. Plus Loving and Williams are both pretty decent scorers. Della Valle might be ready for some minutes as well. Thomas won't be missed as much as one might think. He can score but man can he be cold sometimes. Very streaky shooter.
If Q stays one more year he should jump into the 20ppg range. If Slam keeps improving that jumper he should jump some points too. The other possibility is Loving or Kam add some scoring punch off the bench.
I keep coming in this thread thinking there's Mike Mitchell news, and getting posts on OSU basketball.
You're killing me, Smalls! Now I've just added my own useless post that's unintentionally fooled people into thinking there's Mike Mitchell news! Shame on me haha.
Edit: Just saw this on twitter from Bournival of ESPN
Brad Bournival @bbournival
ESPN 150 LB Mike Mitchell calls #OhioState #Buckeyes official visit "crazy, awesome AND great"
I've heard quite a few people say before that at Florida, a lot of Meyer's big name recruits waited to commit at Under Armour and Army All-American games.
Mike Mitchell, Vonn Bell, James Quick and Trey Johnson are all playing in those games. Just some wishful, positive thinking if nothing happens here soon haha!
Bournival's Insider article doesn't have much more detail than the "crazy, awesome AND great" line. Other notes: Mike got to check out a basketball game - maybe that helps with Mickey - and his dad continues to emphasize that Mike will commit when he feels comfortable, so no date yet.
Was looking at the Texas A&M commit list. they have about a bazillion people, but they also have 5 MLB commits! You can't help but think that this plays into OSU's favor.
Are we hearing anything on Mike? I know someone spoke to the dad, but did anyone speak to Mike himself? I'm still calling for a commitment on Thursday!
I would assume any team still in the mix is going to visit with him since the dead period is near. Still scares me if he is with another team but I don't think he is the kind of kid who will commit on the spot without talking with his parents.
I saw this as well...The longer we go without a commitment from Mike the more nervous I am getting. Mike Farrell this morning posted something in regards to Mitchell on TOS stating the same thing about OSU's chances if Mitchell doesn't commit soon.
still hearing Mitchell to OSU...would be really surprised if it doesn't happen...stranger things have happened in recruiting though...why hasn't Mike announced yet? That is the only thing that should be even a slight red alert to anyone right now, but I still have it to OSU based on all of my info...FWIW the guy on the Front Row Radio is an A&M alumnus, just sayin'
Heard the same thing over on Bucknuts!!I truely hope this is way-way off,or we may be dead in the water at LB this year,as far as recruiting goes.Know we want Johson, and are talking to Sanders, but fellow LB recruits might not sign if we can't land any other big fish.God this stinks,if true!
People are melting down on Bucknuts, this is just a prediction from a local beat writer. Who know's what will really happen, however, the longer this goes...the more worried I am.
Texas A&M is aiming to sign 54 new football recruits this year. That includes 12 LBs, 4 punters, 2 personal chefs, and 3 high-priced call girls they recruited from Craig James's hotel room. Apparently, the call girls are injured, but Texas A&M expects to redshirt them, anyway.
I feel bad for the guy, his dad's a complete helicopter parent.
Sadly, I think if you took a correlation test examining the relationship between overly involved parents and sports stars, the results would be pretty high.
That probably applies more to the sports that take a larger investment of money over time, rather than football, but it definitely exists across the board.
This. 100%. If my parents were that hands on in my college decision, I probably would've flipped.
In the end, it's Mike's decision tho.
simple solution: Send Mike and Mickey to OSU. We don't have any suburbs quite as wealthy as Plano, but I'm sure they can adapt to Dublin or UA.
If you enjoy being caucasian and being a minority, then sure, Plano is better.....
Not sure why that would matter either way.
Can we get a link confirming this?
Heard it was his dad not making the trip. If mom is going, still a good sign.
Mike Mitchell's dad can't fly and osu coaches visited his parents this summer. I don't think it is a problem.
shortbus20
that's a good point. If I recall correctly, coaches did a recent in-home visit as well. We haven't heard from his parents any time recently
Why can't his dad fly?
My guess would be his lack of wings, or maybe a cape
Can we get a link to confirm that he doesn't have wings or a cape?
Hilarious!
I wonder how much of his dad not being able to fly is part of his parents not wanting him to go to a school so far away?
maybe his dad said this to mike.
Doesn't Mike also have like 4 other siblings besides Mickey? Seems like I had heard he was the oldest of 6 or something like that.
then the parents have no one to blame but themselves
More Mitchell athletes for the Bucks.

I wouldnt be too worried. I believe the reason he didnt commit earlier is his parents wanted HIM to see the school he was visiting before making a decision. Osu has always been his leader even with visiting all the other schools.

This from Michael Chung from The Ozone:
Good Lord!
Having that many siblings might play a role in where he goes.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
No wonder he can't make the trip. Poor man is exhausted! He must have an awful 'fiesty' wife on top of that!
Hopefully ALL of the other siblings are power forwards and linebackers!
Only if they are three or four years apart. Otherwise they should sprinkle in a few Centers, small forwards, and safetys.
As in...."Tracy".....Sprinkle?....

Why would anyone downvote this? Sheesh
You mustn't speak of down votes, oh no I just said down vote...shhh hear they come!

Parents or not it is only GREAT news that Mike is visiting and will have plenty of time with Meyer and company! Any staff members have any insight? I know the staff has felt pretty good with Mitchell...are you guys (staff) still pretty confident?
Have to view it as though he already knows what he wants and this look is to verify his desires to himself. Parents sent him off saying make your decision. Amazing how paranoid some are. Have faith not fear.
Well what a great opportunity to develop his football family for the next four years.
I'd really like to see Thad offer his brother a scholly. That would be pretty sweet.
It's expected Mickey will follow Mike wherever he goes. He's rated #4 in the early ESPN 25 for 2015.

Thad will offer Mickey even if Mike doesn't come to OSU. Kid is special.
Unfortunately everyone else (kansas, kentucky, unc, duke, etc.) will be offering him as well.
True but if Mike is already here, that's one hell of a leg up on the other guys!
Maybe, maybe not. Reference exhibit Jaylon Smith.

Hardly home but always reppin
Shazier looks like a 4.3 athlete at LBer to me, but I know what you mean. Mitchell has nasty, freaky speed. Maybe the next "Big Kat". :)
Go Bucks!
maybe he wanted to party too and meet some girls...it's probably a lot more difficult to do those things when your parents are with you
I think it may be a good thing when the kid doesn't have to have a parent with them, maybe it shows their maturity and independence
Could Conley's committ entice Mitchell?

till Sunday
I think he commits Sunday Night or Monday morning then.

Reading all this "speculation" is hilarious! Enjoy your trip Mike!
I'm surprised no one has stated that 87.3% of recruits who visit without their parents end up committing before they leave. (I kid, I kid)

It's been like that forever, hasn't it?
i.e. anounce it when ready..
what's new there?
Technically not news (nor did I claim it was). Felt it was worth posting based on the fact that the 247 guys recently said that Mitchell had supposedly cooled on OSU (which was mentioned a few times earlier in this thread), whereas Chung's take/"source" tends to side with the idea that we've been hearing for awhile, which is that OSU is Mitchell's favorite and a commitment to OSU may come soon.
I agree and with that. Also with skai Moore saying he isn't interested in osu any more because of the lack of communication from osu, the staff must feel good about a lb or two
BCast at Ozone saying the same thing:
This translates to me I had an awesome visit, I wanted to commit (or may have), but I wanna go talk it over with my dad back home.
Does anyone know if he was in town for the pep Rally??
How Firm Thy Friendship....
He was there... I believe one of the 11W guys tweeted a pic of him in the bleachers last night. I think he is supposed to be in Columbus until tomorrow.
He was there.
Thanks guys. I bet that was a great atmosphere for him to be a part of.
How Firm Thy Friendship....
Hearing the visit going really well...Thad also got his pitch in to Mickey via Mike after the hoops game when Fickell brought Mike into the locker room after the game
LIKE!
It definitely has been encouraging to hear the good news all weekend. Hopefully he doesn't wait too long. I'd like to see us get some more players locked up here, specifically Mitchell and Trey. I know that may be a little bit, but it'd be nice to get these guys committed.
Arent the All-Star games coming up soon? I think that's when most of the remaining guys will announce
Is this a situation where Mitchell could commit before he leaves or will he go home and discuss things with his parents before committing?
Take it to the bank....
Hey Squirrel, you got 19 but again a different guy (I am not complaining). Could you wish for #20 now please?
Unreal right! lol
I'll try it again tomorrow and hope for Mike Mitchell specifically. Once a day seems like enough for now. Never would have thought it would have been Munger though. Not going to complain though. The gift is real!
i am going to be following your posts religiously now
the prob with hoops is i think thomas will be gone
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Thomas will leave Lenzelle will essentially replace his scoring though

This is a football thread. Basketball has its own forum.

I was thinking the same.
Wherever you are, there you be!
ESPN 150 LB Mike Mitchell calls #OhioState #Buckeyes official visit "crazy, awesome AND great"
^No verbal commitment yet, but enjoyed the visit.
Me thinks he reports back to mom and pa and commits within a few days.
I've heard quite a few people say before that at Florida, a lot of Meyer's big name recruits waited to commit at Under Armour and Army All-American games.
Mike Mitchell, Vonn Bell, James Quick and Trey Johnson are all playing in those games. Just some wishful, positive thinking if nothing happens here soon haha!
haha, if he doesnt commit within a few days then your dead on!
Bournival's Insider article doesn't have much more detail than the "crazy, awesome AND great" line. Other notes: Mike got to check out a basketball game - maybe that helps with Mickey - and his dad continues to emphasize that Mike will commit when he feels comfortable, so no date yet.
Rivals' Marc Givler tweeted this a few moments ago:
"Ken Mitchell, father of 4* LB Mike Mitchell says parents not being on #OhioState visit 'doesn't make a lick of a difference' in son's choice"
So there's that.
Everything point to OSU.
Love that Texas talk
Someone close thinks Mitchell will happen fwiw
Alex what do you mean will happen, like hes going to commit to us soon or what?
yes going to commit to us...timeframe not given though
That's what I gathered.
With the way his dad was talking it sounds like it will happen sooner rather than later.
I don't want to wait to hear Mitchell committed but it would be cool if he gave his verbal on Christmas along with Trey Johnson.
That's the gift that keeps on giving all year long
Wherever you are, there you be!
Even better than a "Jelly of the Month Club" membership.
Hell ya
Wherever you are, there you be!
Mitchell, Johnson, Quick, Bell, Gibson, Worley to round this class out please!!!
Would love to get Quick, but I'd bet he sticks with Louisville since Strong is staying there. :(
Was looking at the Texas A&M commit list. they have about a bazillion people, but they also have 5 MLB commits! You can't help but think that this plays into OSU's favor.
Gosh dangit, can't he think of us borderline stalkers and just tell us already!? We NEED to know or we will be running to the cliffs in droves ;)
Seriously I already can't sleep as it is...
I've started shaking for hours uncontrollably...
He's such a diva!!! ;)
I've already found my cliff. It's very high, has lots of rocks at the bottom & has some very murky looking water. I think I see sharks...come on Mike!

Are we hearing anything on Mike? I know someone spoke to the dad, but did anyone speak to Mike himself? I'm still calling for a commitment on Thursday!
Wait....why Thursday?
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
There was a thread posted a few days back where everyone was guessing when a commitment was coming this week. My guess was Thursday.
Don't say stuff like that!!!! You know how bad my Thursday is gonna suck if no Gray Box with Mitchell's name in it appears!?!?!? ;) hope you're right.
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
I heard from inside sources that he will be committing Thursday via Goatse.
I too am hearing great things about Mike's visit. I can't say more because I'm so incredibly connected and inside this situation that it is insane.
I guess a few people didn't get the sarcasm !!
Or don't appreciate it. No problem, I will laugh at my own jokes for hours.
I liek some good sarcasm!
Reports of Oklahoma visiting today
I would assume any team still in the mix is going to visit with him since the dead period is near. Still scares me if he is with another team but I don't think he is the kind of kid who will commit on the spot without talking with his parents.
Oregon also visiting today.

Implications on Mitchell maybe going to A&M?
Alex, you guys heard anything?
Thanks for the quick reply Alex! Makes me feel much better.
Thanks for the update. I'm getting my celebration GIFs ready.
Wayne Woodrow Hayes
ive had mine ready for a few days now haha
Thanks Alex!
SCOTTC.
Apparently, the call girls are injured, but Texas A&M expects to redshirt them, anyway.
wait,
Craig James Killed Five Hookers While At SMU?
I feel like i'm watching another presidential election with all these predictions and exit polls
