I hate my job, so I do this...

I know this is really far fetched and has no chance to become a reality. Sitting in an office at work, staring at a wall for a large portion of a 24 hour shift tends to cause my mind to wonder about all kinds of stuff. I've wanted to post this idea for while but never have. Well here it goes...

64 teams make up 1 league(for lack of better word to mind). Each division is broken up by 4 conferences of 16. The conferences could be decided geographically or in some way to try balancing out the power. Each conference has 2 divisions of eight. The regular season would consist of a round robin schedule with in the division and then however many non-division/non-conference games they want to schedule to reach an acceptable amount of games for the regular season. But keep in mind, the post season will be extended so probably shouldn't exceed 10-12 games.

It's pretty self explanatory that the winners of each division play each other in the conference championship. Then the conference champions play in a semi-final game to decide the final two teams to play in the national championship. Here's where it starts to get a little crazy... Obviously, there far more schools with football programs than the given limit of 64 in the league. So why not take the top 64 teams, make them league 1. league 2 would the 65-although teams. League three so-on... At the end of each season, the teams that placed last in each division are placed back 1 league and replaced by the teams in the league behind that won their divisions. So in 1 of the conference we have for example:

Division A:                                                  Division B:

1. Ohio State 14-0                                      1. Northwestern 9-3

2. Tennessee 9-3                                       2. Florida State 8-4

3. North Carolina State 9-3                         3. Uconn 7-5

4. Virginia Tech  8-4                                 4. Minnesota 5-6

5. Louisville 5-6                                        5. USF 3-9

6. Wisconsin  Arkansas 2-9                        6. Navy 1-10

7. Michigan State 1-10                              7. Notre Dame 1-10

8. Michigan 0-11                                      8. Alabama 0-10

Michigan finished their regular season with zero wins and placed last in their division as did Alabama. So now both Michigan and Alabama would rotated back to league 2 and replaced by 2 of the league 2 division champions. There could still be a bowl season for the teams that qualify for bowl games but and did not make the tournament.

And you did this while not partaking in any illegal substances or substances that when used in excess causes one to think and act abnormally? Your place of employment will need you to pee in a bottle immediately. Other than that, nice effort.

I discussed this with several friends many times. Effectively it would make college football like soccer in Great Brittain. The cream rises to the top and the chaff falls to the bottom. I like the idea that there are rewards for winning and punishments for failure.

this is what they do in europe premeir soccer. its called relegation i beleive over there. the top teams from "minor leagues" come and the bottom teams from "major" go down. it is extremely succesful in europe and soccer it prevents teams from accepting failure because they will be relegated to the lower league and make less money. i dont like the idea of it in american sports especially not football.

I think you did all of this just so you could put zero wins next to SCUM and Bama's names.  ;)

I kinda like the idea.  I am sure someone could point out many reasons why I should not like it, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I don't think it's too far off base... Maybe it's just a pipe dream but there has been some talk of the major college football programs (the "haves" if you will) breaking away from the NCAA and governing themselves. Your "league" would be the group of teams that make up the newly created association. The conferences/ divisions would sort themselves out from there based on which teams were included. As for the relegation, it'd be an interesting idea. I guess it would depend on how many teams were members of the new organization and if there were any "worthy" schools left out.

College football is not European soccer. And I never want college football to be European soccer.

Nah. The idea is as American as it gets. Rewards for winning. Punishment for failure. I don't see anything like this happening ever, but it would give strong lower level teams the ability to better themselves and help bad teams that benefit from being in one of the big boy conferences (here's looking at you Indiana and Minnesota) decide if they really care about doing what it takes to earn their keep.

Maybe in the original United States, but not anymore.  We don't keep score, everyone is a winner, everyone gets a trophy, no warball at school because kids will be singled out, and on and on and on.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we make college football anything like soccer.  The point was to make larger leagues with teams moving between leagues based on performance every year.  At least I think that is the main purpose of it.

I think the larger leagues is what's going to be happening within the next decade and it'll be interesting to see how things play out. Especially if they add all these teams to create thse Mega-Conferences will schools feel the need to schedule hard non-conference games or will they start to make away with those and play easier games knowing the "meat" of their schedule will get them the big wins they need.

Oh Wait ......... the Ess Eee See already does that.

I had a similar thought posted here:

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/forum/football/2012/12/i-like-to-dream-so-...

Its a little over the top and who knows how likely but would involve a playoff and no polls or computers.  But then what fun would that be.  If you can't complain about the polls what fun would college football be.
