Goodell says NFL discussing eliminating kickoffs

Linkified.

According to TIME, Goodell recently discussed with Rick McKay, Falcons president and head of the NFL’s competition committee, a radical rule change proposed by Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano. Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Uh okay.

I would like to introduce a dumb new rule too: Instead of actually kicking field goals, a player will throw the ball from his own end zone and chuck it as far as he can. The further the throw, the more points you receive. Radical.

In keeping with the FG theme, I would actually like to see a rule implemented where the number of points awarded for a field goal is directly related to how far away the field goal is kicked. This could work for college to.

Say for example 45yrd and in is worth 3pts, 45-50yrds is 4pts and 50+is 5pts, or some form thereof.

I think it would add quite a bit of strategy to the game. Do you go for a 5pt field goal down by four, do you try and get the first down to get a 4pointer, or do you try and go for the TD to win.

The more strategery the better in my opinion.

I got a grand plan for Mr. Goodell. Let's outlaw tackling and replace defenders with cardboard caricatures. That way when a wide receiver accidentally brushes the piece of cardboard Goodell will only have to fine and suspend a piece of cardboard for excessive force. Sounds like something I wanna watch.

There it is. People are getting caught up in the NFL's effort to curb concussions but they are all ignoring the actual problem-football itself is a dangerous game. I've been clammoring about the words "Sub Concussive Hits" each time this comes up. Chris Henry is the poster boy for the dangers of football. Diagnosed with CTE yet never treated once for a concussion. The NFL is making a fake effort to say they want to protect the players, but they don't want to because truly protecting them changes the game drastically, and no one (owners, fans or the players themselves) really want that. Admit its dangerous, say there are risks-but that won't happen given the 2600 person class action suit the NFL is facing would be a total litigation nightmare.

Why not have the whole game be just like the NCAA football overtime rules? 60 minutes, always start at the 30-40 of the opponents field...

We could just the size of the field down in half making stadiums smaller and cheaper (maybe triple purpose NBA/NFL/NHL) raising owners profits, eliminate punts, field goal kickers become more important, and the final scores will look more like a basketball game than a defensive struggle...

Further, we can make it two hand touch to make it safer...

Then we can wrap the players in bubble wrap, covered by a layer of foam, covered by a hard plastic shell...

We could change all the colors to pastels and get extra points for how well the player dances after a score...

Extra points for ballerina moves and tumbling… form matters… so practice up…

The Devin Hester rule needs more work?

If he claims this would be because of player safety, there is no bigger hypocrite in the history of the league. The NFL switched to a full 16 week slate of Thursday night football-that move alone tells me he gives two shits about player safety. Guys play on Sunday, even grizzled vets will tell you their bodies aren't right until the following Friday at best. Instead, they have to play another game 4 days later? But you care about safety? BULL. Anyone noticed how bad Thursday Night football has been? Guys are ill prepared and totally gassed coming off a Sunday tilt. ONLY play Thursdays if the teams are coming off of a bye-that's the only way to cure it.

Go back to fining guys for every little thing-like 10K to Jay Cutler for tossing a football at a guy after he pie faced him to the sideline-a play Cutty got 15 yards for....

Then go and say you aren't going to suspend Suh for the Schaub groin kick because you didn't think there was intent-but turn around and fine him anyway. Which is it Rog? Intent or no?

This guy is an idiot. A committee of owners needs to talk to this guy. He's making the NFL a world of money right now but is going to kill the league as a sports entertainment super power in the long run.

I know people often call fair catches on punt returns, but it seems to me that they are more dangerous since the gunners can fly down and destroy the returner as soon as he catches it with no chance at covering himself.  At least with the kick return everyone can see everything coming (and there is still the opportunity for a touchback).

Bucks43201's picture
Bucks43201 on 6 Dec 2012 - 4:30pm #

oh, geeze --- ok, Roger Goodell --- just get it over with and eliminate the entire sport as we know it. Time to dress the players up in pink skirts and put flags on their uniforms, while eliminating the tackle aspect of the game. This is such an ill-conceived move. It's aimed at the premise that all serious concussions and injuries are a result of the speed, force & velocity of the gunners coming down the field on a kickoff team. That premise is just not fact-based. Most concussion happen to occur in the play of field, on a 3rd & 10 or a 2nd & 6...just a regular down & distance. This is a turrrrrrrrible idea. Just turrible. This Goodell has waaaay too much power. The most exciting thing in football can many times be a punt or kickoff return. He is already helping to shatter the chance of more exciting returns, with the move from the 30 to the 35 yard line for kickoffs. Now, he's talking about getting rid of these altogether? Wow.

This is what I would propose if they absolutely had to change the rule.

Kick off of a tee from mid field.  If it goes through the end zone the team takes it at the 20.  If it goes through the uprights the team has to take the ball at the ten.  Returns would take place as normal, but there would not be many.  Onside kicks would still be allowed.  This would at least make the kickoff slightly exciting while keeping it in the game and reducing injuries.

toledobuckeyefanjim's picture
toledobuckeyefanjim on 6 Dec 2012 - 2:59pm #

Once the kickoffs are eliminated, the punt returns will disappear, too. The ref will simply place the ball 35 or 40 yards upfield from the previous spot. Goody-two-shoes Goodell will see to that happening to prevent injuries and the excitement of a player running a punt for a touchdown. But ask Goodell about how PSLs rip off fans, and he'll tell you the NFL is all in favor of them.

Sissification of America huh? Well I guess I'm of the mindset that just because something is a joke doesn't mean it escapes criticism. Roger Godell didn't use his status and stature to prey on innocent, and impressionable children. Thinking your 'joke' was stupid doesn't make me a sissy, nor does it speak to any larger process you think is currently occurring. Your 'joke' was stupid, off base, not funny, and ignorant.

While I'm at it, saying something idiotic isn't protected from heat. My offense to your joke doesn't reflect anything other than my distaste for your bad humor. Make it a bigger issue all you want, I'm sure I could learn a lot from someone who compares Roger to Sandusky-but the fact is you made yourself to look the part of a jackass and got called out for it.

But I'm the sissy-not the guy who has the stones to make a joke like that but doesn't like when someone is critical of it. Bush league.

when people joke about Sandusky, I think the ire is meant more towards PSU & all of it's arrogance, and NOT child molestation. Come on, do you really think it's about child molestation. You sound like the PSU crazies, who slammed OSU during Tat-Gate, but when their school was embroiled in the worst scandal in the history of sports, (which people are going to make jokes regardless of, whether right or wrong), they criticized anybody making fun of Penn State as making fun of child molestation victims. When, clearly, the ire is towards Penn State, itself, and not the victims. That's just stupid to try to equate that...it's not a joke about child molestation. I don't think we should have to explain this, sheesh

The initial comment was Jerry Sandusky > Roger Goodell. I get what you are saying but what the initial comedic genius was doing was drawing on the awful nature of Jerry Sandusky and everything he stands for and comparing it to the short sighted, foolish mistakes the NFL commissioner is making. He's saying a child rapist is better than an NFL commish. If you missed the attempted humor on that one, then there's nothing I can say to clear it up. Of course, perhaps it illustrates my initial point that what was initially said wasn't that funny anyway....
