I'm sitting here at work looking at the bowl games and noticed Va Tech is 6-6... They haven't really been relevant in terms of competing for a national title in the past few years. Frank Beamer is getting older and being out recruited by other coaches across the country. If they lose their bowl game and finish at 6-7 does anyone see Beamer being fired or asked to retire? It's probably time to make a switch at Va Tech. It's not as bad as FSU was at the end with Bobby Bowden, but I believe the speed of the game and the intense recruiting has passed Beamer. I don't mind him at all as a coach. I dislike coaches like Les Miles, brady joke, Lane Kiffin, Bret the Baby, Will Muschamp, and Nick Saban but Beamer doesn't bother me. I was just thinking what would happen if they lose and finish 6-7.

He just resigned his extension till 2016, it has some clauses that would make it tricky to fire him. The fans still like beamer and they still recruit well, I would imagine they let his contract run out or he retires first.
I can't speak for the Hokies out there, but this is the first year since 2003 that Va Tech hasn't had double digit wins. They haven't lost 6 or more games in a season since 1992. I would think he has earned the right to continue coaching with all the success he's had there over the years. But, we are an instant gratification society with a what have you done for me lately mentality, so if they do lose their bowl game, who knows.
Prior to the season beginning I thought he had Va Tech up there in terms of consecutive 10+ win seasons and bowl games. He's a good coach, had a bad year and will bounce back with them more than likely. I wouldn't be surprised if he is gone like you said because of the society we live in but it would be a shame for them if that is what happens.

Nothing happens to him. He has earned the right to have one bad year. They just played in a bcs bowl game a year ago. This is the first time in like 10+ years that they didn't win 10+ games. He still recruits the Virginia area well, and should have a bounce back year in '13.
Nobody earns the right to have a bad year in college football anymore... Chizik won a national title 2 years ago and he just got axed. Obviously his season was worse than Va Tech, but donors who pay out the $$$$$$ want wins. I know he has been successful in the past, but he can't recruit with Urban, Saban, Miles, Muschamp, etc. I think his days are numbered (1-2 more years at the most)...
I agree with you, but Chizik is not a great example. He is kind of a different case. He struck gold for one single season. And few even give him credit for the championship. All you ever hear about is Newton and Malzahn.
Agreed, Chizik walked into a great situation and then his recruiting / team management after Newton left didn't do much for him to keep his job. He didn't do the greatest at Iowa State either, not a big surprise he got the axe.
JT
Agreed, Tenn. Chizik was an awful coach at Iowa St, came into a fairly talented team, although underachieving in the latter years of Tuberville, and had a so-so year (8-5 overall, 3-5 in the SEC) in his first year, won a NC game the next season with the one year college wonder, Cam Newton, and a great OC in Malzahn, squeaked by again the following year at 8-5 (could've easily been 5-7 in the regular season and not go to a bowl game if luck didn't play a part) and then pretty much got steamrolled all year this year. Outside of the NC year, which any logical fan will even agree that it wasn't Chizik who brought them that title, he's had so-so to terrible seasons 5 out of the 6 years he was a head coach. Not exactly a good track record in my book.
Beamer is a little different as he has been fairly consistent in terms of winning. My only problem in people defending him not being let go (which I'm not sure if he should, but I'm saying this for argument's sake) is that year in and year out we all sit back and claim how overrated VT is. They lose a big game here and there, lose a game they should never lose, but then still somehow end up in a BCS bowl game...mostly due to an annually weak ACC. VT fans love him, and it almost seems like it's on a worship level like JoePa was with PSU fans, so they'll never let him go, IMO. Again, I'm not sure if he should be let go, but I'm definitely on the side of VT always being overrated...and is being overrated a product of they think the team is okay but Beamer is a superb coach and he can coach up his teams or is it a product of the talent is there and Beamer just can't get it done anymore? If I had to choose, I probably lean towards the latter.
I don't think anything happens to him.
You have to remember, Va Tech was nothing before Beamer. It's not like he is one in a long line of winning Va Tech coaches. He's it.
I'm in the DC area, and I've always found Va Tech fans to have a good understanding that Beamer is basically the only thing that put them on the football map (with an assist to Michael Vick). Even when Va Tech is doing well, most the fans I know still don't think of their team as on the level of an SEC, B1G, B12, or P12 leader. They're remarkably humble and have a good sense of where there team is in the grand football pantheon. That's not to say there aren't some chest thumpers, just that there are less than I notice for most winning programs.
That understanding/perception/feeling of being down a level or two gives Beamer a lot more leeway than if we were talking about a 6-7 season at an Ohio State, Alabama, or USC, for example.
The scary thing for Va Tech fans is there is no guarantee at all that once Beamer leaves they'll stay relevant. Here's an example: before Beamer in 41 years they went to 6 bowl games. Under Beamer, in 25 years they've been to 20 bowl games.
VT's problem this year is their offense. Fans are yelling for the firing of their OC. Rumors are circulating that he will be replaced after the bowl game, FWIW.
Their offense is the entire problem. It's really really bad. And I'm sure Beamer's been faithful to a fault in whoever the OC is.
Like those above said, the Hokies have had nine 10+ wins in a season out of the last 10 years, including 8 straight leading up to this year. They were bound to have a down year. However in that same span they were 4-6 in bowl games, 1-4 in BCS games alone. So his time may be coming to an end, maybe not now but I'd say within the next 3 years.
Great post. Cuts right to the heart of the issue with Beamer. He's overrated, but can VT ever do better?
Agree with cplunk. Techsters love Beamer like we would have loved having Tressel coach for a good while if events didn't derail that option. Yeah, they wonder if he is past his prime, are concerned that he will fossilize in place like Paterno did, but are still very loyal to him. They expect to be in the top 10, 20, but not be contending for a national championship. That seems to be okay. They're not happy about this year's record at all, but at least they're better than UVA (their despised rivals), so they shrug and say that next year will be better. If VT has another crappy year like this one, then the heat will be turned up. Until then, ehh.
Well I hope Beamer turns VaTech around, OSU needs them to be solid in 2014 and 2015. A 6-7 Hokie team won't help SOS in the least bit.

Beamer will be there as long as he wants, he built VT. Bud Foster will be his replacement whenever that happens.
I live fairly close to Blacksburg. The people here were frustrated this year which made me smile, but they still love Beamer and blame pretty much everything on Thomas and the lack of recruting a QB. The few that are upset with Beamer blame him because he hired his son a few years ago, but don't dislike him for what he has done as a coach. Some of this sounds crazy I know, but I'm just telling you all how it is. He will be there through 2016 anyway, unless something just drastic happens and then as FROMTHE18 said, he will be replaced by BUTT Foster.
