End the Charade: Let College Athletes Major in Sports

I thought I'd share this article from the Chronicle of Higher Education:

http://chronicle.com/article/End-the-Charade-Let-Athletes/135894/

A retired educational psychology professor at FSU makes the case for creating a 'sports performance' major for athletes.  It's similar to what a vocal performance or theatre major's curriculum might look like.  Though I doubt this would actually come to fruition, I'm curious what people think about this.

A so-called major that does absolutely nothing to prepare students for life after age 22 is not something a reputable university should involve itself with.

The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.

I think it would set a lot of people up for failure. Many of these kids were studs at their high school so they think can go on to play in the NFL so they would major in something like this. When they don't make it into the league they would be screwed.

Would this still count as "playin' school"?

Teach the kids to be coaches and athletic trainers if not pro-sports players. They can learn nutrician, excersize skills, training, coaching, etc.

Won't be any less prepared than if they got a history degree that some get and is just as useless... Take a look at their majors, many are not getting something useful to begin with.

100% correct.  Majoring in Sports Performance does as much to prepare one for life than being a cello, women's studies,  or sculpture major.  If these guys want, let them fully immerse themselves in their crafts.  It's not cake class either.  Football Theory was a class with a C+ average grade at Miami U.  Coach didn't let players slide into easy A's or B's either.

Would be a better idea than General Studies major :)

Class of 2010.

Half of them just take general education classes and train nearly 24/7 anyways, I hardly see the diffrence if it was a college credit course or not
