Could we be in running for Max Redfield??

Just read over on Bucknuts that not only is Max Redfield interested in Ohio State, but would probably have them ranked #1, if OSU offers.Know he was USC commit, but has since backed off them and is very interested in OSU and wants to take an official visit to Buckeye country. My question is,since Von Bell doesn't seem as likely anymore,do we bring in Max from Caly.He is ranked very high and what a HUGE get he would be,Or do you think it's all smoke??Could get very interesting.

How have we not offered him yet?

I just read that over in Boarding House.. Very surprising. I think we at least bring him in for an official, but I would hold off on offering until we know what Vonn is doing.

Thats what I was thinking as well, but per Bucknuts,we have not.I say jump on him and see what turns up.At the very least we could make it interesting for a lot of teams.Maybe they don't want to scare off Bell, but I say make the offer. We could definately use this kid.

If anything make the offer to put pressure on Bell? Tell Vonn were offering Redfield and whoever commits first gets the safety spot (although if Redfield commits I wouldn't e shocked if we took Bell too, wow what a safety haul that would be)

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

All I've heard about Max Redfield is ND-bound. I'm guessing that game on 1/7 won't hurt their chances either, no offense to Urban and crew. Unless the report on Bucknuts has info (sources) otherwise, it seems like he's ND's to lose.

Just earned a 5th star in Rivals latest rankings. Who else is he considering?

Has already made an official to Notre Dame ,still likes USC,don't know how much since he's de-comitted,wants to visit Oregon and wants to make an official to OSU per Bucknuts.

Not paid info BTW: Per Bucknuts

Redfield has spoken with Tom Herman and Ed Warinner, but to this point the Buckeyes have not offered a scholarship nor asked him to make an official visit. But interestingly, in addition to saying he would like to make an official visit to Ohio State, Redfield adds that, “If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be Ohio State.”

I'd say Vonn Bell is #1 and if he chooses Tenn...then Max gets an offer...and if this is really his sincere feelings above...I'd say we're OK;-)

Yeah, but what if we lose both? Wait around for Bell, just for him to pick Tennessee, and then lose out on Redfield, because he doesn't get offer sooner than later.Don't like losing out on recruits that can't or won't pull the trigger. Can't leave any stone unturned in my opinion.

I'm not sure they'll wait around...they're already in contact with him I'm sure.  We're just not privy to that info;-)  It's going to be all good on a high powered safety either way... IMO of course.

Im with you on that. I know the coaches have probably made some promises to Vonn Bell, as to recruiting other safteys so for the time being this will probably stick unless they get indication of Vonn not wanting to come. I think the picture will become much clearer after this weekends trip.

I could see Urban pushing for commits from Vonn Bell and David Dawson, knowing very well that they may not get another chance to see OSU and will be visiting other schools in their top 3 between now and signing day. If Bell doesn't commit this weekend, look for Redfield to get that offer

Thanks for source; that's a great quote if nothing else. Hope there's something behind it.

Totally understand the apprehension in offering, though, with three potential safeties in Bell, Worley, and Conley still in play. If he were to schedule a visit, though, I'm guessing they would almost have to offer.

Maybe I'm off base. If so, please educate me on what is acceptable.

Max Redfield = prototypical USC safety/Taylor Mays type (6'2-3", 200+) - lengthy, playmaker, excellent ball skills

Vonn Bell = prototypical SEC safety/Shawn Williams (Georgia) type - stout, hard hitter/sure tackler, good ball skills. Some people have compared him to Eric Berry, but I see Bell as just a notch below that based on the fact that Eric Berry's cover-skills were supreme for a Safety (possibly because Berry was a converted CB iirc). Bell will be great, though.

^I would be ecstatic if we grabbed EITHER. Either is a full-time starter by their Sophmore year (perhaps even Freshman depending where they're going/ala Shaq Thompson at Washington this year).

This is only good news.

Either we offer Redfield and have a great chance to land him, even before Bell wants to commit.

Or it forces Bell's hand and Bell commits earlier for fear of losing a spot.

@LLJJGG: Great analysis on difference between two. Saying the name Shaq Thompson, though, worries me a little as Redfield is considering Washington and Tosh Lupoi can recruit like a mofo. Being a player for two high 4 or 5-star players at same position, though, is something I still have to get used to. Awesome development.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 3 Dec 2012 - 7:31pm #

You're right, Lupoi is a fantastic recruiter. Thompson would be at Cal if it weren't for Lupoi, no doubt about it.

I think we could get Redfield over Wash/Lupoi though, IF the staff really devotes serious interest to him. ND is obviously the other real threat to get him (unless he reconsiders USC). But the one thing I wonder is whether our staff will continue to be so focused on Bell that Redfield will be an afterthought. To me I personally feel they're interchangable (both are great, both just bring different skill-sets to the table). In a fantasy world I'd love to have Redfield as a ball-hawking FS, and Bell as our hard-hitting SS. Throw Eli Woodard at one corner and Cam Burrows at the other, Armani Reeves at the Nickel and you've got a top 3 Secondary in a couple years. Ah well, we can dream!

bucknut8's picture

Staff should off Redfield. As it should be a win/win situation.

Either the offer to Redfield pushes Bell to commit on his visit/soon, and take his spot in the class, or Bell goes elsewhere & we land Redfield.

You would have to think that if Redfield commited before Bell, & Bell still wanted in, we would find room for Bell. I think both kids are the types that you cant say no to.

a DB class of Burrows, Woodard, Thompson, Lee, Worley, Conley, then 1 or both of Bell & Redfield. WOW! we would be set at CB & S for the future, but still need to bring in quality guys throughout the years. I could see us bringing in this large DB class due to the fact that Conley can end up playing CB/WR, Burrows could play CB/S, also Lee & Worley both could grow into LBs or play the nickel & S.

Bell seems to make a lot of effort to make it to bama for games. And plus no visits from Bell it would seem just from an outside look to be favoring bama. I would say offer both, take the first to commit. I'm sure coaching over the next few years will help improve either player to be at their best.
