Do we really think he'd be allowed to commit before Johnson and/or Mitchell? Seems to me that we have a max of 6 slots left and we don't say no to the top 6 on our board. I doubt he's in the top 6.
Yep. I'm guessing he wouldn't be allowed and, hence, the confusing messages over the past few days. It really does bring up a problem that a select few programs have, which is that when you offer a kid, he'll most likely really want to play for you and then you have some tough decisions to make. It's starting to look to me like Mitchell + the first between Sanders and Johnson to decide = LB haul. Maybe the staff does not see a huge amount of difference in the upsides/skill levels between Sanders and Johnson? Stay tuned.
For whatever reason, I could see two LBs commiting today. I wouldn't mind Tommy Sanders after watching his video, but would prefer it to be Trey Johnson and Mike Mitchell for selfish reason, of course.
You really think they go for 4 LBs with 6 (max spots left)? This is confusing to me and they have a clearer view of the class than I do if this happens.
I think they could, yes...remember Worley is a LB/S hybrid so he could play STAR for us, or even DB if we want...also I think they are VERY worried about LB for next year and future years, especially since Ryan Shazier could go early after next season
1. Mike Mitchell
2. Trey Johnson
3. Chris Worley
4. Shelton Gibson
Those four are in IMO. Then you would have Tommy Sanders at five and Vonn Bell as someone you don't say no to as a sixth. If James Quick wants in you take him and find room, that would be seven and is the absolute maximum I think they take. Would be 26 in the class and leave Elder, Timmons, and an OL on the outside looking in.
I do think they'd love to land 2 WRs and at least one OL, but the 82 limit is hurting.
I did know that about Worley and figured he was in because he was flexible on positioning.
I honestly didn't think we were that bad off at LB. Interesting. I know LB is a position of need, but I thought we were a little more protected than they do with the LB haul from 2012... and a lot of those guys got to see the field this year.
I had the class, 6 spots left, with 2 WRs, 2 LBs, 1 OL, and 1 S, and looking at the outstanding offers I figured it would finish close to this ratio. What about the WR position, you think the only take one more? We do have a lot of young guys....
I would say David Dawson O-lineman from Cass Tech gets the nod over Quick if we already have Gibson. Chances are Quick stays in L-ville anyway to remain at home with Charlie Strong. Damn those three lost schollies are really hurting!
That's what I heard too Alex...do you think they'll take all 3?

Alex, I thought Sanders was delaying his decision? Since OSU hasn't offered yet, he was going to visit a few more schools, including South Carolina and Auburn. Is that still the case or has the staff offered Sanders? And will that impact the decision of Trey Johnson?
If Sanders commits I would think that the staff would still take both Mitchell and Johnson. But what would that mean for Chris Worley, any one have any thoughts?
I think Mitchell is when not if. Kid loves urb and osu but is just taking his time. IMO sanders affects his decision 0%. I hope sanders is in, bc we need a game ready mlb and he could step in and do it and do it well. I read somewhere that worley was being visited by withers. Also, imo, if that kid wants in (and i want him) he needs to decide yesterday because there are too many higher need/higher ceiling guys out there. Time to get on board or look for traintracks on your back!
I watched his flim Sanders plays alot more stand up rush linebacker then traditional LB. I still hope he commits you can't have to many LB types with 4.5 speed... rip to our Big Ten competition.
I believe the days of schools telling their recruits to hold out for fellow teammates is slowly dying. As competition on the recruiting front becomes more agressive it will become increasingly more difficult to wait for these recruits, in my honest opinion.
Unless the "tweener" is elite, I don't like hoping that he Could grow into a linebacker or he Could learn how to play safety. The Star discussion has roiled me for a long time, and I won't win any fans here from those who think that we always do everything right, but here goes:
I love Tyler Moeller, but once he got hurt in that fight, he was a poor tackler at the Star, and the postion suffered. Christian Bryant was also a risk-taking poor tackler at the Star.
Beyond that, I think the idea of the Star does requires multi-tasking more than it requires a "hybrid" type player. A great safety will be a great Star. A linebacker who is fast enough could be a great Star. The idea of a tweener having to play the Star speaks more to our depth than the requirements of the position.
I had to ease up on Glenville a bit when I was reminded that Mr. Smith came from Glenville.
But no, I am more concerned with numbers and while my Cal Bears have to take gambles with tweeners, tOSU should not have to reach or guess, especially in times of scholarship crunch.
Would we be recruiting Worley if he wasn't from Glenville? I have no idea that's why I'm asking. I think we have other needs and other, more sought after recruits, might get left out in the cold because we wanna keep the Glenville pipeline open. Is he that good?
Good question. He seemed to be a B list kid in the staff's mind the way this played out. I am worried that Urban is losing his nerve, with the news of the Juco LB and Worley as possible fill-ins for a precious few spots. I understand that things change quickly, but I am nervous when there are going to be no spots open for the kids we have been after for so long.
Marc givler mentioned that a sanders commitment would not impact mitchell or johnson. He is a SAM, johnson a WILL, and mitchell a MIKE.........no pun intended
Might wanna check the sarcasm meter bud ;) Not sure how long you've been around here, but Steensn is known to have a sarcastic post or two every now and then. I enjoy them, but you gotta be able to seperate the sarcasm from his legit posts
The only thing it says is that we need more then two linebackers. A good corps has probably 7-8 guys. You got to think injuries and what not. Cant just bank on two players.
IMO, I wouldn't read it that way. Williams and Perkins just don't have a lot of playing time. We're going to have a very inexperienced LB corps this year, save for Shazier. Re-read your comment - Urban is worried about depth, not necessarily talent. We all saw firsthand this year why depth can be critical - injuries etc. really thinned out our LB group.
Does anyone think Urban didn't play Perkins & Marcus because he knew Boren didn't have a real role in the offense but loved him from a leadership stand point? He raved about those 2 in camp last year and as we all know playing LB in this defense just isn't something you can do over night (Minus Shazier because he's just an absolute freak). Boren could make the transition easier because he went against the D everyday for 4 years and watched more film than the freshman did. I know Urban has come out and claimed we have no LB's, but he recruited Perkins & Marcus, so they must be able to play. Right?
Your underlying point is exactly what I was saying above about the staff's, suprising in my opinion, dire need for LBs. We recruited a highly-rated and talented freak athletes at the LB position last year. I thought Boren on defense was partially leadership, but it was apparent after a few games, that he had an incredible mental advantage. I expect Grant and Perry to be the starters going into the spring. I hope that there's some serious competition to get someone, anyone to step up and play to their potential. We should have some great teams the next 2 years at least, gotta put it together.
I feel like perkins, marcus, and cam williams will have the same opportunities as the incoming freshmen. not much difference exp-wise and Uban's going to play the most athletic/physical/smart/knowlegable LB's he can find, no matter what class they are from.
Marcus is raw and needs to grasp the mental part of the position, but he is super talented.
Williams is so sound fundamentally and mentally, but needs to put on some good weight.
Perry is a beast who is my best bet to start at one of the slots alongside Shazier.
Roberts is OK but will take longer to develop as he is not as talented as the other guys. I'd be surprised if he ever starts at OSU personally, just because I think we'll recruit over him. Good kid though and works really hard so there is a chance he can outwork people.
Perkins, like Marcus, is really talented and athletic, but is also raw and needs work on the mental part of the game. When it all clicks for him, he will be a stud. I also heard he might have some issues in the classroom, so hoping those get worked out.
Outside of them, we really need Curtis Grant to pull it together. He can be the answer in the middle if the light goes on. I don't see Crowell as an impact linebacker at this level, so I think with only one sure-fire linebacker set to start next year, that is why OSU is going after so many in 2013. Also, Shazier could very well leave early and if the 2012 group doesn't pan out as expected, we are in trouble.
I'm glad you broke each guy down, people seem to forget sometimes it takes 2 years in the system before the light clicks on for people. That's the problem with the recruiting frenzy we have today. Everyone hears all this stuff about these great high school players and automatically assumes they'll be major contributors from day 1. Braxton and Shazier on the exception not the rule. Even though there were a few talented guys in last years class doesn't mean this years class doesn't need 4 more. Depth is as much of a concern as talent at that position.
Have to think Urban will get the most out of some of the 2012 guys...Perry has some potential with his size but I could see him dropping down to Nate Williams spot, wonder where Cam Williams will get his shot. My hope is for Cam Williams, Perkins, and Marcus to cycle in this year and be effective.
ive always supported any Buckeye that leaves early for the league, but the thought of Shazier leaving early and not getting 4 years of him makes me want to absolutely vomit and/or cry. If he stays 4 years, he hits 36 status.
The scary thing about Shazier is that he still doesn't really play the position right. He guesses and overruns a lot of plays and still makes a huge amount of plays through pure athleticism. If he learned the LB position like a Cie Grant and tackled more securely he could go down as a one of the greatest ever.
I'd agree with you through 6-7 games this past season...he still has some growing to do, but from the PSU game and on, he looked fantastic playing the position right
....coinciding with Boren's move to the defense.....will Shazier take a step back to the performance of the first 6-7 games of '12, without a skilled/ experienced/ capable back to shore up the middle?
Yah i was really high on Marcus, Williams, and Perkins. I really hope perkins gets it together with his speed and size combo. Marcus is also an athletic freak as well. Its just so hard to find a kid that has both the mental and physical part down right off the bat these days.
As sad as I would be to see him leave, he has better #'s than Manti Te'o who is a projected top 10 pick. You can't blame a guy for leaving when you're going that high in the draft. But I agree, if he stays he could seriously break every record.
If they do end up taking 3 or 4 LBs in this class I surely hope it doesn't impact how they will look at the 2014 class. I hope they get 3-4 in that class too. Raekwon, Garrett, Booker and Berger.
From what's been posted on this site about McMillan he isn't afraid of competition. The other guys I'm not sure about. The fact that they are studs I could see them coming in and competing for a spot. I'm all for competition and letting the best man win the job.
Now who in the heck would down vote that. That was funny, clever, lightening up of the tension of waiting, and not negative in any way. Geessh, lighten up Francis.
Alex, Vonn is killing me! I know its 60/40 chance we get him but when is his state final game so we all can move on with life? And that's another thing, you guys! Think of that D backfield (If Swag Meyer does what he does) with Bogard, Woodard, Cam & Vonn in the future!
Been hearing Mitchell is swaying Texas A&Ms' way.Hope this is false, but the longer he waits, the more time other teams have to get in his ear.Bucknuts is stating he is A&M lean at this point.Might not hurt to offer Sanders now!!
I hope this isn't true. Would absolutely suck to miss on Mitchell after he has had us #1 for this long. I still think his parents might try to persuade him to stay closer to home with all of their kids and grandkids. Ohio is a long drive and plane tickets wouldn't be cheap.
Regardless of whether or not Mitchell is trending to or from OSU, I think Urbz needs to push for a committment soon, like very soon. There are others (Sanders) who want to commit, but Mitchell is still out there and he is obviously our top choice. Granted we could take all 3 of Johnson, Sanders, and Mitchell, I think we need to continue the momentum from last weekend as we head into the dead period. Urban needs to get that committment before the dead period starts on the 17th (I think thats the date) or we could be in trouble
I'm sure he has to have looked at Texas A&M's recruiting class. They have 34 commits and 5 are LB's. If early playing time is a draw for him I'm sure Urban will point that out. We have 0 LB commits and are looking for good young players to come in and get PT.
Again... I personally think mom and dad are wanting him to stay close with so many kids and grandkids. Traveling would be a nightmare for a family that size.
From what I've read, the A&M rumor is just a fan/alum of A&M posting that Mitchell will go there. I don't know that it's false, but I haven't seen anything reliable/unbiased saying that Mitchell is not coming to tOSU.
I don't trust Bucknuts. The latest I've heard is he's down to tOSU, A&M, and maybe Oregon. He loved his visit and plans to announce at the Army All-American game.
2014 LB class is more important than this one to me, i know we need depth but if we can get Sanders and Johnson, or/and Mitchell, then its obviously awesome but I desperately want the three studs in the 2014 class to be buckeyes more so than any of these 2013 guys.
Fromthe18 I agree^^^...I know which three you are talking about and they are on my wish list as well.. I would be happy With 2 possibly 3 lb's in this class.. We have some talented young guys who have yet to play a snap at lb.. Plus a kid by the name of tyquan Lewis who could very well see some action at lb as well..I know some of these kids are a " must get" buti think we will be fine.. Look at all the 3 star studs who have dominated in the past so you never know what could happen..
Garrett, McMillan, and Booker... all three are monsters... if we land all three of them, probably the most hyped LB group to ever come to OSU, and probably the Big 10.
Someone in another thread predicted Mitchell on Thursday. If so, give that man a helmet sticker!
That would be me!
Lots of buzz around Tommy Sanders today too.
Do we really think he'd be allowed to commit before Johnson and/or Mitchell? Seems to me that we have a max of 6 slots left and we don't say no to the top 6 on our board. I doubt he's in the top 6.

Yes watch Tommy Sanders...gray box on hand
The suspense is killing me
If it's Tommy Sanders does that mean Johnson or Mitchell will be committing?
What does this mean for Mitchell, Johnson, Worley?
means nothing...they would still take all 3

That's what I heard too Alex...do you think they'll take all 3?

The fact that Mitchell has not committed yet and is contemplating more visits cannot be a good sign.
I think he is a guy that the staff will hold a spot for.
I also believe distance becomes and issue with his family and all of their kids.

I predict: Mitchell & Sanders are in, and Johnson is out - he stays in SEC country.
It's down to us and UF from what I've read... UF already has 4 LB commits... I believe he is a Buckeye.
Then it appears that Worley may be the odd man out if Sanders commits.
Alex seems to think we will take all 4 of them if they commit...
To my understanding, Worley is much like Darron Lee is that he could be flexible enough to play as a Safety/Star as well.
I hope that we do not let Worley commit.
Unless the "tweener" is elite, I don't like hoping that he Could grow into a linebacker or he Could learn how to play safety. The Star discussion has roiled me for a long time, and I won't win any fans here from those who think that we always do everything right, but here goes:

A linebacker who is fast enough could be a great Star. The idea of a tweener having to play the Star speaks more to our depth than the requirements of the position.
i seem to remember you having it out for glenville kids..is this really about positions?
I had to ease up on Glenville a bit when I was reminded that Mr. Smith came from Glenville.

It's going to me Hargraves from FL, he is Alex's mystery flip and he's going to do it today.
I don't think he is going to flip, plus we have 3 solid corner backs committed already

Someone has to lighten things up a bit! Especially with all the legitimate post from people calling for defensive players as the mystery flip.
Alex's mystery flip is an offensive player! We've addressed this multiple times!
247 says Fickell visited Sanders today.
Alex, what does they say about David Perkins and Camren Williams if UFM so worried about depth at LB? these 2 guys are not what they though?
The only thing it says is that we need more then two linebackers. A good corps has probably 7-8 guys. You got to think injuries and what not. Cant just bank on two players.
Agreed. It means we still need depth at the position, and many of these young guys need more time to develop.
we're losing 5 senior LBs so replacing with 4 guys makes perfect sense
You must be including walk-ons Stewart Smith and Ross Oltorik along with Sabino, Boren, and Klein?
yes sir.
IMO, I wouldn't read it that way. Williams and Perkins just don't have a lot of playing time. We're going to have a very inexperienced LB corps this year, save for Shazier. sorry about the double post, not sure how to delete one of them
I bet I have checked this site 20 times today...
I wonder if the staff could set up a text message system for people who wanted to enter their number...
They could send out a text when someone commits... "Mike Mitchell commits to The Ohio State University... Find out more at www.elevenwarriors.com".
11W STAFF... Could we make this happen? I believe there are free websites to use.
^^^^^ This would be amazing!
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
That exist... it's called a Twitter App and subscribing to Alex ;)
Been hearing Mitchell is swaying Texas A&Ms' way.Hope this is false, but the longer he waits, the more time other teams have to get in his ear.Bucknuts is stating he is A&M lean at this point.Might not hurt to offer Sanders now!!
SCOTTC.
I hope this isn't true. Would absolutely suck to miss on Mitchell after he has had us #1 for this long. I still think his parents might try to persuade him to stay closer to home with all of their kids and grandkids. Ohio is a long drive and plane tickets wouldn't be cheap.
Man, what is UP with linebacker and offensive line recruiting this year? Possibly same could be said about wide receivers.
Striking out more than Adam Dunn.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Amen
Dead period is December 17th - January 3rd
Let's stop freaking out and be patient.
Bucknuts did NOT say he was an A&M lean, a A&M alum they were doing a radio interview stated that.
The Bucknuts staff stated that their "close source" think mitchell is all Buckeye, in the same thread.
Boxley
It would be a huge letdown if he didn't end up committing
2014 LB class is more important than this one to me, i know we need depth but if we can get Sanders and Johnson, or/and Mitchell, then its obviously awesome but I desperately want the three studs in the 2014 class to be buckeyes more so than any of these 2013 guys.
False alarm?
Slow play Worley until they find out what Double D's wants to do.
or better yet, set him joose and bank the scholarship if we don't get the exact kids we want
I'm disappointed with everyone who contributed to this thread and got mym hopes up...
^ +1
STEENSN if I could up vote that I would. Great stuff!
ESPN RN reporter tweeting that Sanders has an OSU offer and is still visiting South Carolina.
