Bowl Games Are Awesome

I hear people complaining all the time about there being to many bowl games. I totally disagree. These bowl games are for the kids. They get a chance to celebrate their hard working season all in one game and honestly these small bowl games like Arizona and Nevada are exciting as hell (even though Rich Rod won, but good for him). I believe its all for the kids and a true college fan believes that too. So I say long live all the bowl games!!! Go Bucks!!

I thought it was over, so I turned it off.

So in his first year at Arizona he's already had a better year than he ever had at M*chigan. lol

I hate the bowl games really.  Bowls were awesome when there were like 5 of them and making one was truly something spectacular.  Essentially, if you were a B1G team, the Rose Bowl, was your title game.  Now, you can be a 6-6 Buckeye team and have to go to the Holiday Bowl or Gator bowl whatever the hell they got humiliated in last year.

I enjoy seeing the extra games one last time before a long off season, but I don't think they are meaningful or special at all.  They are just another non conference game anymore, and that's fine, I just wish they didn't act like it was a big deal if you win the Vagisil Bowl or whatever the hell the 45th bowl is anymore.

I think if you were part of the team you might feel differently.  Now, if I were a fan of Arizona, I might not be excited about a bowl win December 15th, but as a fan of college football, I love the craziness.

Of course I would feel differently if I were on the team.  They get to take a road trip to a nice place and get swag bags for it, plus it's the only system they know.  Most of these kids were 4-6 years old when they BCS started. They have no reference point to a time when a bowl game actually was meaningful and only a handful of teams went.  They don't remember a time when there weren't at least 50 teams going to bowl games.

Even if the players do think it's fun, it doesn't change the fact that they are basically glorified non conference games.  I don't think any of these guys start the season saying man I really hope we go to the San Diego City Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

I'll go along with the congratulations to Arizona, but when your bowl game is probably a less interesting matchup than the majority of your regular season games, how special can it really be?

bowl games are all good til you have teams like n. illinois and wisconsin (by default) playing in a bcs game over teams like georgia.... kids should be rewarded i agree however this system is garbage...... really we need a min 8 team if not 10 team playoff so theres no debate period..

I think it is embarrasing that there are 30+ bowl games.  I agree they are special and meaningful to the players but if your team goes 6-6 you do not deserve to play in a bowl game IMO. Did anyone watch the Arizona game today?  Did anyone notice there were less than a couple thousand fans in the stands?  Bowl games used to mean something.

more football = awesome.

If you dont like the abundance of bowls, then I doubt you watched the games today.  So why do you even care?  I'll take the Bonus football, even the bad matchups

These bowls are a racket, not some act of glory at the end of a season.  The few people who run them get freakishly rich off of them (like, 350-400K), the money they make is tax free because they're somehow run as "charities" despite the fact that most schools take a financial loss on the event to subsidize their share of the ticket allotment that doesn't get sold because the bowl is meaningless and expensive.  Schools are basically paying bowl barrons a large chunk of the bowl money they get from their conference to subsidize the publicity that they feel they need.

It's a despicable aspect of this sport, and it can be argued that it's the most despicable aspect of any sport.

Bucksfan: I completely agree. I take it you saw the same 60 minutes special I saw about the bowls and some of the investigations into their corupt practices.

There's been 60 Minutes, there's been Real Sports with Bryant Gumble, there's been articles in countless newspapers, there's been the book "Death to the BCS"...

The list goes on and on and on and on with regards to this same information about the bowl system.  There really is no excuse for anyone to not have known about it by now.

I just had a lengthy discussion about the bowl games with a buddy.  I think they need to up the requirements to 7 wins and reduce the number of bowls; he is happy to have more football games, regardless of how competitive it may be.  We both agree that New Year's day and after should be held to a handful of premium/BCS bowls only.  With 35 bowls, we propose the idea of there being games on every non-NFL day (at least Sundays) starting the week after the championship games.

It is truly a mistake to have 5 games involving the B1G, that I have at least minimal interest in, to occupy or share similar time slots on New Year's day (obviously, the Rose Bowl is an exception).  And it is an absolute travesty to allow the GoDaddy.com Bowl and BBVA Compass bowl to be played in between the BCS and Cotton bowls and the title game on 1/5 and 1/6.

Believe it or not...I agree with you Hail.  We get overkill with bowl games nowadays and really like you at least 7 wins idea...sure makes sense to me.

I like the idea of spreading out the bowl games to the week after conference championship week.  CBS could have a nice doubleheader with the Army/Navy game (which always seems to be a week after championship week) followed by the first bowl game.  Then you can flip over to ESPN and watch the Heisman ceremony.  And yes, set the bowl eligible mark to 7 wins.

There are too many bowl games. If you have 6-6 teams playing in bowl games to fill all the spots, that tells me there are too many games. And yeah, sure it means a lot to the kids to play one more game. Most of these games make zero money and schools lose money sending their teams and then can't even sell their tickets to their fans.

IMO teams that finish 6-6 (or 6-7 Georgia Tech, I'm pointing at you) should not be playing in a bowl game. Ohio State should not have played in the Gator Bowl last year. Finishing .500 should not be rewarded. Rewarding mediocrity is dumb.

More bowl games means more football and that to me is always a good thing.  I agree it's for the kids, which is why I still support G. Smith not taking a self-imposed ban last year if he felt no ban would come in 2012.  If we had self-imposed then what if there would have been no ban; then the conference doesn't get the money and the kids lose out on a chance to get the extra practices (which may have helped a kid or two "get it" so they were better this year), not to mention the fun that bowl week entails.  It's different in a BCS game, where everyone is so keyed up to win.  When you go to the gator bowl, of course you want to win, but it's more for bragging rights IMO

I just love watching football and the kids competing. What else do we have to do? If you dont like it change the channel and don't bitch. I hate when I hear talk show host on radio bitching about the bowls, when these guys are just on local stations and not the big time stations. It makes me want to call in and say hey you are the small guys in the industry like those small bowl games no one care about you either.

The only good thing about so many bowls is the chance to have extra practice time, I would rather have the Buckeyes in a meaningless bowl than no bowl!
