early enrollees create attrition

I saw a video with tyquan lewis stating he's enrolling early and it made me wonder who else was doing so. I think guys that enroll early can actual influence current players that are the same positions to consider transferring if they think theyll get less PT. This can give us some room to get the 24 or 25 commits for this class bc without some attrition, other than hankins, we'll need a few more spots to get all the commits we want. Anyone that knows of players planning on enrolling early would be appreciated.

Early enrollees i know of: lewis, sprinkle and i thnk barrett

Enrolling early has nothing to do with increasing the size of this recruiting class.  Early enrollees can be counted back a class to fit more than 25 into a class but that isn't OSU's issue right now.  They are up against the total scholarship limit of 82.  Guys enrolling early doesn't affect that number.  They can be counted back a class but the total number doesn't change.

His argument is that a guy like Burrows enrolling early could cause attrition.  Essentially, a young talented recruit enrolling early may cause or allow a guy who is burried on the depth chart and likely to fall further down the list to transfer out, opening up a scholarship.

So guys will transfer because of an incoming recruit?  I don't see it happening.  They will be just doing winter workouts and conditioning.  There could be transfers after the spring when guys actually put on the pads and practice, but that will only affect the 2014 class which figures to be tiny when you look at the numbers.

They may transfer but it won't be because Tyquan Lewis or Cam Burrows can run a gasser.

True, but how will March/April practices affect the 2013 class which signs in February?

Guys may transfer because they see (or are shown) the writing on the wall after this season but high school kids coming in to the program in January isn't going to scare guys off.  These guys didn't get to where they are by being scared of competition.  If there are any transfers before NSD it is because of a lack of pt this year or guys were encouraged to look elsewhere.

so lewis, sprinkle, barrett, burrows and woodard..i would think we'll hear of guys leaving before signing day so we should know how many spots in time for guys not sign elsewhere.

guys have already left! There were at least 5-6 players who left since last February. I don't think there needs to be a run on transfers like you think. The numbers are already there.

the spots are there assuming wood medical hardships, add hankins, the 15 seniors and i believe 4 open spots thats 21. I mat be missing one some somewhere so add that we still need 2 to get 24 available schollies.

from the looks of it so far we might have a DL or DB that wants to leave with of all the talent coming in at those positions. we definitely need a couple transfers to give us the few spots we need.

Forgive me, but hoping current players transfer so we can sign more recruits sounds a little SECish. Of course if they are afraid of competition, I guess it is good for them to transfer.

Agree with you here.  There seems to be a double standard evolving. But, as long as they are voluntarily transferring and not being told to leave I'm cool with it.

only difference here is the coaching/style changes that would cause the kids not to fit into the new system. I do NOT want to push kids out either. However, if the kid doesn't fit it could be the best for him to find playing time elsewhere as well as the team needing the spot.

There is definitely a double standard. Just before Urban came, people were bashing all these schools for "over-signing" and just general smack talk. But, now we have a coach who is capable bringing in 28 guys every year, we have no problem with it. I understand attrition will happen. Every kid comes in thinking they will make an impact and will probably get mad when they don't. I have no problem with that. I just think its suspicious when teams sign 25 recruits and only have 15 scholarships open. That is making a statement to current players in my opinion.

It's always been a double standard.  People think it's ok that we don't make offers til after a guy transfers (whether the coach tells him he should probably transfer to make him do it or not) but in the end it's no different.  We really don't know what Saban says to players to get them to leave the program either.  I also don't think it's any different waiting on a guy with bad grades to get them up before offering and just offering and then taking away the offer once they don't qualify. It's a different approach but in the end it's the same thing.
