2015 QB Jayru Campbell and 2014 ATH Damon Webb Visiting Ohio State Next Month

2015 Cass Tech (MI) QB Jayru Campbell told me he will be visiting next month, he said there's a chance it could be the weekend of January 18th when 2013 OG David Dawson will be taking his official. He also said his teammate, 2014 ATH Damon Webb will be joining him on the visit. Webb has already been offered by the Buckeyes. Coach Coombs has been to Cass Tech a couple of times recently.

Both these guys (Campbell and Webb) are big time recruits. Campbell has already led Cass Tech to two state titles. Webb has made an impact all over the field in the state title years. It's great to get both these guys on campus, they should get plenty of time with the coaches too.

I will be shaking in my boots if Urban starts pulling these caliber of players out of Cass Tech.  I don't see it happening.

I disagree I believe he can. Here is an example for you. Cam Newton was from Georgia and he took him straight out of the Bulldogs backyard and that was Florida's biggest rival down there. I think he's got a shot.

Sorry, I never said that he couldn't or that it won't happen.  Just saying that, as a Michigan fan, if Urban starts getting the pick of the litter out of our number one feeder school (in our backyard), that I fear for Michigan's success going forward.

scUM's success going forward isn't looking good anyway.  This year's team is the worst OSU team you're going to see in a while and they went 12-0.  Urban is 2 years out from having the speed he needs and a SEC style defense.  Appreciate your contributions to this site tho.  Very reasonable scUM fan.

Start shaking in your boots now...and yes you did say "I don't see this happening."  So that pretty much means you don't think Urban and CO. can or will.  OSU may not get them all, but they're going to get a few and it won't stop.

Depends. Urban's offense intriguing to a lot of quarterbacks. That's why you kind of see us having our pick of the litter with QBs in 2014. One would think Campbell will be very interested.

Webb is probably another story. I'd be surprised if anything happened there.

I'm confused as to how we have the pick of the litter with 2014 QBs? The top pro-style guys aren't even interested because of the system, and our only offer is currently committed to another school. Sure, we're in good shape with some top guys, but "pick of the litter" is a gross misrepresentation.

I do agree with you.  If tOSU is going to have a strong pull, it will be with Jayru Campbell.  The question will be if he believes he needs to go to a pro style offense to help prepare for the NFL or if he is ok going to a system that emphasizes him being a dual threat.  I'm not saying that Urban's offense can't prepare one for the NFL, just that it could be a concern for a QB prospect evidenced by history.  I remember with Braxton Miller, that one of the reasons he turned down Urban Meyer and Florida is that he liked tOSU's offensive scheme better and that it could better prep him for the NFL.  Given that Urban's current QB didn't commit to him for those reasons, will Jayru Campbell go through the same thought process that originally led Braxton Miller in a different direction before fate intervened?  Since Campbell is a 2015 kid, there is time for Urban and his staff to convince Jayru that they can in fact prepare him for the NFL by the product they put on the field with Braxton.

Recent meyer qbs tebow n smith are good in nflr n ger drafted first rd n with rg3 n newton this stigma is being destroyed. Tebow wins games as a qb forget the semantics. Last time alex smith pkayed he went 18-19 on MNF n douche harbaugh let him lose his job to injury.

Dawson probably the best shot to get out of Cass Tech right now. Still got another year to work on for Webb, and seeing where Jayru is in '15, you can't tell right now with '15 prospects.

I think some people are forgetting about where big bank Hank is from. The kids up here take notice of that. And Urb has a bit of swagg that will appeal to some of these kids. My sons are 16 & 18 and there has been a small uptick in their circle of friends (The Cass Tech - Detroit Public School crowd) that have become closeted Buckeye guys - mainly because of Urb (Tress kickin ass yearly didn't hurt either)

I pass Cass Tech on my way to the office. I should really start putting bigger "Block O" decals on the ride and driving a little slower as I pass. You know - as they say in the biz, a lil grass roots marketing ... lol

LOL True, Cass Tech, Renaissance, King and DPSL are very different from say like Brother Rice, Orchard Lake St Mary's or Country Day. Their athletic infrastructure and support systems are varied as you could get. Being in Southfield, my sons have social circles that dip in to all those school systems and I've been fortunate enough to have friends that currently teach in the DPL (so much respect for them - especially the art teachers lol) and if I'm honest, a lot of those kids in the DPL always feel a little slighted in feeling that they don't get as much respect as say the Country Days or Detroit Catholics. Perpetual underdog mentality. If a school with a coach that has "swag" and a reputation like Urb has, comes a knocking, those kids are gonna listen a little harder than they may have before. When Urb was up here around the corner from my house over at Southfield High this past summer, the buzz of the young men that are in my sons circles that happen to play HS ball was all about Urb. And I'm not even saying that with blind homerism. My wife volunteers at a lot of the local schools and even she picked up few "hey, you hear who's here" whispers from the young men. Heck my son went to a bball game last week with his block O hat on. Where it's usually nothing but smart comments and good ribbing when he wears it to school functions, this time he had a few people ask where he got it. That was at DPSL game. And wasn't it Webb on Cass Tech that started a little buzz because he was wearing OSU gear during the season?

Am I saying "All your recruits belong to us"? Hecks no. Creating a great feeder pipeline? I doubt it.  Do I think this regime has a better shot of planting a flag in Detroit than the past regime? Yes, yes I do

He is saying Detroit is a big city. Every area is different. Let's say with Cleveland, Glenville is an OSU feeder school but other Cleveland schools like Ed's, or St. Ignatius may not necessarily be OSU feeders

Yes, Hankins is from Michigan, typically it is tougher for tOSU to pull Michigan kids than it is for Michigan and MSU to pull Ohio kids.  I would say part of this has to do with a larger high school talent pool in Ohio (which by the amount talent, tOSU can't pull them all, so by default they have to go somewhere else), but another part probably has to do with the fact that the state of Michigan has two major universities.  So for local kids it is normally going to be #1 Michigan, #2 MSU, and then #3 some out of state school with #1 and #2 flipping based on kid's preference.  Even if a kid doesn't like one, typically he always has the other to fall back on.  For Ohio kids, it is #1 tOSU, #2 tOSU, #3 tOSU, and #4 Insert Out of State program here.  Because of these dynamics, it will probably always make it harder for tOSU to pull a kid out of Michigan when they have two options that appeal to state pride first.

So let us bring up your Michigan example of Hankins.  Hankins openly discussed wanting to go to MSU to play with his high school team mate and good buddy William Gholston.  MSU was considered a clear favorite, but they never offered.  Hankins also sought to get an offer from Michigan and grew up a Michigan fan, and camped there in the summer hoping to earn an offer.  He did not get an offer at that time, but did receive one late in the process (after Thanksgiving).  Do to this, Hankins stated one of his questions when he took his official was going to be why he was offered so late.  So why did Hankins not get an offer from his preferred #1 and received a late one from Michigan?  There were big concerns about his conditioning and being able to keep his weight down.  Well, tOSU took a flyer way earlier on Hankins when they offered him in late May, a full 5 months earlier than Michigan.  That is a lot of ground to make up and based on Hank's desire to find out why Michigan offered so late, probably played a part.  Who knows what would have happened had MSU decided to offer.  Would Hank still have been a Buckeye?  Maybe, but the point is that it helped tOSU to land him because the two major in-state programs neglected him.  I also think the additional pull from Michigan and MSU filling their rosters with multiple in state recruits will always outweigh out of state programs pulling in one Michigan kid here and there.

With the above being said, Urban is a wildcard, and I would never count him out.  It is just too early to see if he can successfully recruit the elite Michigan kids on a constant basis when their are so many dynamics stacked against him. I don't doubt that he may win a recruiting battle in Michigan occasionally, just don't have the confidence he will do it consistently.

Completely agree. Everything about Michigan HS football VS Ohio HS football I get. Seen it and lived it first hand. Between me growing up and playing ball in Ohio while my sons have grown up and played ball in Michigan.

What's always intrigued me living here is the number of players that don't go to State or UM ... but end up in Iowa.

Hail is absolutely right; it would be a symbolic victory to pull a kid out of Cass and this is not lost on Urban and staff. Hoke pulling kids out of Ohio was similar, but also pragmatic in the sense that there is a ton of talent in the state and it's so close to Michigan geographically. He needs Ohio talent. Not sure we need Michigan talent, but it's a devastating message to send, like Sherman marching through the South. Sherman, you may recall, was also an Ohio guy.

Don't sleep on cornerback Damon Webb out of Cass Tech, I spoke with someone who knows his dad and he says they are high on OSU. Says Webb has a great relationship with Coach Coombs and will be there on an unofficial in Jan. I saw him play a couple of games this year and all he does is make plays.....period. Looks more like 6ft 175lbs then what is listed.
