Mike Vrabel will be at Massillon Washington today checking in on 2013 ATH Gareon Conley, 2014 ATH Marcus Whitfield, and 2014 OL Nathaniel Devers. Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Massillon and McKinley play in the second round of the playoffs tomorrow night as well. Should be another great game and a chance for Conley to show he is the real deal.

First post been a big fan of the site for long time!

Vrabel is our best recuiter from what I have seen, but can someone explain why recruiting is not done specifically by position coaches. Example... if Vrabel is recruting Robert Foster and Zach Smith is recruiting Dashawn Hand  how would they be able to close a deal without being able to explain what OSU would do that is in the best interest of a particular kids position.  Just a thought would love to hear any thoughts on this.

It would be incredibly inefficient for each position coach to visit recruits at their position.  Plus, in some cases, a recruit's position may not be known with certainty.

I think it would be hilarious if Vrabel stopped by Marlington just to ask Dymonte Thomas 'So, how many coaches on Michigan's staff played 15 years in the League? So how exactly would they know what it takes?'

Not a 100% sure on this, but I believe most recruits talk to more than one coach, but when it comes to getting visits by the coaches it is broken down by regions. Vrable is probably sticking to the North East this week, and they have one coach in probably in Texas, one coach in the Virginia and the Carolinas, and another in Georgia and Florida. I would think that would be easier as far as traveling goes and being able to see more recruits, rather than having position coaches flying all over the country to meet the kids that will be getting specifically coached by them.

yeah it's more efficient for coaches to recruit an area...the position coach will be involved with the recruitment and Urban as well if neccessary....every case is handled individually

as for McCray there is smoke to possible interest in OSU but no fire just yet....

I don't want McCray because I think he's anything special per se, I'd just like to see him not at Michigan

I agree that they can not do this for every kid and that approach is fine to establish intial contact, sorry for not clarifying but what I was saying is it would seem more efficent at this time of year to do the following.

Fickell - Should close on Mike Mitchell

Zack Smith - Should close on James Quick

Vrabel - Should close on Dashawn Hand

etc...

But think of what knowing that he may have even a little interest in OSU does to their psyche. Dawson, Conley, possibly McCray....who else has thoughts of wanting to jump to the rival school? Has to hurt, at least a little.

@CMAH Yes, in theory, it sounds intuitive. But look at the big picture:

You have guys who come from coaching/playing in certain geographical areas of the country, and have thus built a report with coaches and players from that area.

The benefits of this: You have Withers going to the Carolinas, someone else going down south, Texas, etc. This means that groups of players can be handled by coaches with unique interest in their region.

On the other hand, if you specified scouting by position group, you'd have Vrabel going to 15 different states in a week, time would be wasted in travel, and while you might have a better chance at a unique few prospects, more would be missed on just out of lack of sufficient personnel.

Now, Dashawn Hand might be talking to Zach Smith, but you'd best believe that when he sets foot on campus for a game, Vrabel and Urban will be right there to give him the star treatment.

Settled great insight! I was just curious because I know the game of football but the recruiting aspect is somewhat foreign to me.  Thanks

We all know that if McCray had an OSU offer early on he would've been a Buckeye.

Crazy how this weekend is going to be. No football and not a good time for the Brax for heisman campaign but...

-Lots of recruiting going on. It's like Urban has sent out his tenticles to start snagging up recruits and get a feel for whats out there. I will almost be disappointed if we don't see some offers go out this weekend and possibly a commitment.

-bball bucks start tonight! Should be an entertaining game in the least.
