It doesn't seem fair. Michigan needed a coach and a couple big names and not so big names turn them down. They get all the way down the list to a slow talking, fat guy with a losing record, but go with him because he's from Ohio and maybe he can be the next Bo. I think this Ohio guy will end up being more of a Gary Moeller...less of a drinker but more of an eater.
Ohio State needed a coach and got an immediate yes from a coach who all the experts had rated the number 1 or 2 college coach in the nation.
I hated how all year the sports media people kept saying how great this rivalry was going to be with now that Urban is here and both school now have great coaches. WTF??? What a false equivalency! Don't let Hoke get lumped in with Urban who's won huge at every school and won multiple national titles, when he (Hoke) brought a losing record and his biggest win is against Ohio State's suspension depleted team that had more losses than any OSU team in over 100 years, and a temp coach to boot. Does anyone think Hoke beats what would have been the Tressel / Pryor lead Buckeyes last year? Yes the rivalry will continue to be great and TTUN may win a game or two but it feels great knowing that they will be facing us as big underdogs in the head coach column, at least as long as Urban is around.

No
Good player's make the play's they're suppose to, great player's make the play's they're NOT !!!
I happen to think Hoke may be the right coach to return Michigan to elite status. I don't think he will have a winning record against Urban but I do think he will dominate his division of the Bigten.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
As long as they don't put Ohio State and TTUN in the same division, Hoke will be good enough to win their division but that's it...
Hard to judge a coach if he's winning, but this year they lost all of their big game match-ups (Alabaman, ND, and OSU) so you have to wonder. I do not think he's in the same class as Urban, but then again not many are. We are very fortunate and I hope Hoke wins enough to stay at Mich and then loses to Urban at the end of each year for many years to come.
Don't forget Nebraska.
Hoke a good recruting he can't coach. When he went for the first down at the begging of the second halftime. You go for field position in the game.
Meyer has made the same type of decision several times this season
Ohio State won every game where Urban made that call, U of M didn't.
Urban's resume speaks for itself. He's a great recruiter and great coach. Hoke is a great recruiter but Mattison is the brains of the operation on the field. Without Mattison turning that awful scUM defense around, they are an average football team on the field.
With 4 losses I'd say they are already pretty average.
Hoke is a good Big 10 coach so that puts him up there with Brett Bielema or Dantonio. He's a solid coach, but he's not going to be elite. For all the carrying on about how great of a job he's done, the guy has lost 6 games in 2 years. He's going to lose a 7th because their going to a bowl where they'll have to play Florida, Georgia, LSU, or South Carolina. Good luck with that boys!!!! It could take 6 years (hopefully more) for Urban to lose that many total games here.
I also think Nebraska will compete with them just fine in that other division.
I always thought Flounder aka Fatty Arbuckle aka Fred Flintstone aka Jabba the Hoke was a questionable hire. Considering scUM is the all-time winningest program, Flounder is the best they could go out and get? He was barely over .500 when he was hired.
That being said they've got to feel pretty salty that we were able to go out and get Urban F. Meyer, the best coach in CFB.
Other coaches during interview process: "Yeah, i know, fielding yost, winningest program, michigan man, yada yada yada. Where's the $$$?. Oh, no $$$..."
Brady Hoke: "That's ok. I was overpaid at Ball State anyways. If you can throw in deal for free Dominos Pizzas then we gotta deal!"

The 2 names dont belong in the same sentence. I see Hoke as a 2-4 loss coach each year in the B1G.
O H I O is the Buckeye State
Urban is a "super heavyweight" as far as coaching. Brady Choke would be considered a "middleweight", at best. The correct answer is no, they do not match up.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
See the brass up north took it literally, they went out and hired a super heavyweight
I want to upvote this but I don't know how LMAO
Hoke is a good coach. I know that on a name-recognition basis, he may not have been the best guy you could pick, but sometimes, hiring based on name isn't always the best move. TSUN did really hire a name when they hired Rich Rod, and we all know how that worked out for them. Hoke has 19 wins in 2 years, whereas Rich Rod had 15 wins in 3 years. TSUN's defense in 2010 was comical, but in 2011, pretty good despite what Walrusball was able to do to it last year. The last two versions of The Game have been competitive, whereas the previous four before that were double-digit laughers.
That being said, Hoke is not in Urban's territory as a coach. Hoke has helped TSUN return to a competitive level, but he is getting a favorable shake because of the guy that he followed, and how bad TSUN was under that guy. While they did beat us last year, it was one of the worst OSU teams we have seen, and in a scenario where they should've completely kicked our asses, they were lucky to escape with a win. Of course, you'll take it when you haven't beaten your rival in 2,000+ days. TSUN's schedule was soft last year. It was tougher this year, but TSUN has lost to the toughest opponents that they played over the last two years. Their best win under Hoke may have been Nebraska last year. Still, that's a better resume than Rich Rod's at TSUN, and that's why he gets a favorable shake.
Class of 2010.
He is also a fan of a flavorful shake.
That's a win for Coach Hole.....well played sir.

Very well played :)
Class of 2010.
Hoke is the right man for the job, but he's going to have to make a few adjustments to get Michigan over the hump. He's going to have to take the reins on the offensive play calling and veto Borges or whomever ends up being the OC, from time to time. He's a bit too stubborn for his own good, and will have to be a bit more open-minded to adjust to a particular game.
He's .500 in big games and against Michigan's rivals. He is undefeated at home and 19-6 coming off a combined 15 wins in the previous three seasons. @Iowa 2011 is the only really bad loss. @MSU (11-2 in 2011), Bama (#2 in the country), @ND (#1), @Nebraska (10-2, caught with our pants down not having Gardner ready), and @OSU (12-0, #3, at worst). All of which with the wrong personnel/adjusting to fit the styles of his players.
Clearly, he's off to a great start recruiting and will be transitioning into his preferred offense with players he wants. I think we're at least 2-3 years away for anyone asking for Brady's job, and that's not too likely, in itself.
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Do you think he should change his recruiting policy regarding verbal commits? Seems to make him look a little foolish holding these 16-17 year old kids to their word without a signature
Good question that will probably be answered some time between now and Signing Day. I'm not so sure it's such a bad policy ethically, but practically it may not work. If his class is largely intact, though, I wouldn't see any reason to change. After all, if a commit wants to flip, he's going to flip, policy or not.
I think it's a bad policy ethically when the coach doesn't live up to the same standards as the players. They can't visit other schools, yet he continues to pursue kids who have committed to other schools and tries to flip them? So on one hand you want people to honor their commitments but on the other you are ok with a guy breaking his word to another school as long as he signs up to play for you?
Hoke is a good coach - he did turn around two losing programs - and has the Michigan Pedigree that was absolutely critical in order to "bring the family back together" after the Rich Rod disaster. He was smart enough, at least, to hire Mattison, although Borgess is not helping things.
It's his second year, he is still playing w/RichRod's guys, and will ultimately fully transition to a pro-set offense.
I predict he will be a 10-2/9-3 type of coach for them that will struggle vs. OSU, and have a .500 bowl record - just like his hero Bo.
"Buclkle your chinstrap, we're gonna grind meat!" - Woody Hayes
Five years from now and we're no worse than 4-1 vs. Hoke and TSUN then I'll start believing he's not as good a coach as advertised. It's still too early for him. One big play the other way Saturday and he's 2-0 vs. OSU and this conversation is different.
"Sherman ran an option play right through the south" - Greatest.Civil.War.Analogy.Ever
Even with an OSU loss on Saturday Flounder still isn't in the same universe as Urban. Hokey Pokey is going to drag AACC from the bottom of the B1G to the middle and no higher. Last year he won with smoke and mirrors and a buttload of jump balls. This year he had creampuffs at home and got pantsed on the road. Next year the butthurt will happen in A2. How long will the powers that be let them lose to us before trying to get Les or Harbaugh again? I hope many.
I think it's too early to say either way whether Hoke is the right man for the job at TSUN. It's a little ignorant to use his overall career record against his cause, considering he took over two completely moribund programs and turned them into big-time winners, then left as soon as the transition was complete. He never was able to completely take advantage of his "construction-work" if you will, because he left for better jobs so soon.
At the same time, it's hard for me to unequivocally say Hoke is the guy who can make Michigan nationally relevant year after year based on his past history. He hasn't done anything yet, consistently, as a head coach other than showing the ability to turn a bad program into a solid one. It's not to say he can't, but in today's world, recruits tend to go for the flavor of the week, or else the national powers who are competing for national championships year after year.
I tend to think he'll fall somewhere in the middle, as many others have said. I think he's a program-builder and sustainer, but not a championship winner. He'll keep Michigan toward the top 2-3 of the B1G (helped greatly by the PSU sanctions), but I think he's good for 2-3 losses per season, and I just don't see them getting over the hump in Hoke's tenure.
"What we do in life echoes in eternity"
Hoke was hired for this reason and this reason alone. Hoke is a bandwagoner. In an interview he was asked how he became a Micigan fan. His answer was typical of 90% of Ohio born Michigan fans. He siaid, everyone in my family and all of my friends were huge Ohio State fans. I wanted to be be different, so I picked Miccigan to root for."
Thank our lucky stars he wasn't a Buckeye fan otherwise he might have ended up being our coach
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
Brady Hoake, elite coach? No. In the discussion of the top 10 coaches in the game? Not even close. But good for the school? Yeah, and I think he'll do a good job for them because he knows the school, knows the tradition, knows the conference and knows what it takes to be successful at Michigan. Maybe in 10 years we'll be talking about him differently but at this point he isn't even close to being in the same league as Urban. Win 2 national titles, albeit with a different team, but still .... Meyer has proof he belongs in the conversation of one of the best coaches in the game right now.
JT
theres not a coach in the game i want more than the one we have
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
