Tressel attending The Game

Didnt see it posted on here yet but Coach Tress confirmed he will be at The Game in what will surely be an emotional and beyond loud moment (loudest ever?) for the 2002 team and the man that took our program to heights we could only dream about the day he was hired. Thought id start a thread on this to see what everyones fav moment was of the 2002 season and the JT era in general in a salute to The Vest.

OSU fans should do a "Vest Out" for the Game.

So a possible new picture with Tressel and Meyer? I need to call a friend about tickets.

Any chance of a "Thank you Tressel" chant?

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I just had to pay out the @** yesterday for my flight to Columbus for THE GAME.

This makes it worth the price.  Can't wait!

The 2002 season had so many incredible moments that I don't think I could pick just one so I will list my top 10.

1. The entire NC game was filled with incredible moments but especially Clarett running down Sean Taylor and stripping the ball.

2. Holy Buckeye

3. Will Allen's Int to end the scUM game.

4. Maurice Hall's TD in overtime to beat Illinois

5. Gamble's Int in the PSU game

6. Watching Clarett blow up against WSU

7. Krenzel's run agianst UC to get us the win

8. Hawk's Int for a TD against Kent St (was a good indicator of what to expect from one of the best Lb's to come through OSU)

9. Celebrating my 21st birthday during the IU game. (not a big moment in the season but I turned 21 during the best season of my life whivh was awesome).

10. Watching our d that year was a treat everytime they were on the field!

My favorite is at the post-Fiest Bowl presser when Charlie Weis is crying up a storm about what he felt was a missed fumble call. When asked what he thought about Weis' claim that it had changed the direction of the game, JT leans back, narrows his eyes, and says, "We had 618 yards of total offense!" in a voice almost Clint Eastwood-esque. The beginning of the end for Weis and an example of how JT stood his ground.

Buckeye, I can kind of agree with you there.  To me as long as he's just being honored on the field and isn't giving any speeches or actually talking to the team I'm ok with him being there.  You can't very well honor that team and not have him there.  BUT, I do think it's a little soon, and I'd like for more time to pass before he's really welcomed back.  It'd be nice to have the mess far in the rearview.

It'll be electric though, and Ohio Stadium will go banannas for him.  It'll be an amazing game to attend.

I'm glad...it's about time for the healing to start and for people hanging on to hatred like gripping onto a ledge...I'll just tell you...I down voted you.  NOT for difference of opinion but because it's time to let go.  JT won the National Title along with those players and I'm sure you remember how great of a moment that was.  It's the ten year anniversary and it needs recognized with him in attendance.  John Cooper wouldn't have navigated through that schedule (especially at home vs tTUN at 12-0...he would have blown that for sure...or the game at Purdue, Wisky, Cincinnati, or at home vs PSU).That was when JT and Tressel ball began...and as I'm happy to have Urban...I wish it could have been on JT's terms as opposed to his colossal F-UP.  That's the way it goes sometimes and I for one, would like to see his accomplishments in The Shoe just like Woody's.  It's up there with his caliber besides the National Titles.  He was a great coach and it's time to recognize him for that.

I don't hate Jim Tressel, however, I do feel that he did serious damage to the program and to the brand.  He left in disgrace, and shouldn't be honored so quickly after those mistakes.  Obviously he did a lot of good, but in the end, I do feel like he put himself before the program.

I love Tress, but he did put the program at risk for a few players.  Very bad judgement, but I still love and forgive him.

Coach Tressel helped the program waaaay more than he damaged it. I don't know how how old you are Buckeye, but we tOSU had lost its shine. It had been 34 years since we had won a National Title. Try to imagine that for a moment. The program is where it is today because of Coach Tressel. He also did this in an era of parity where teams like FSU, Florida, and Nebraska have long droughts. Without Tressel, tOSU would not be the brand they are today.

I do feel like he put himself before the program.

I think you mean he put his players before the program. Nothing he did benefitted just himself, he protected his players which ultimately cost him his job. He most certainly deserves to be there and he will most likely get a standing O

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

@Kansas City Buckeye: the program is where it is today because of Woody (not JT). JT restored the luster to the program, but he most certainly did not build OSU into what it is today (the foundation for that was laid long before him).

I was having a conversation with my father about this the other day. Everyone says that the PI call was a terrible call, but i remember late in the game miami getting a terrible call (i think either a PI call or a PI non-call), i just can't remember exactly what it was. Any insight?

Triv's picture
Triv on 10 Nov 2012 - 12:55pm #

It should have been called holding as the contact was there (he wrapped him up for god's sake) just before the ball was thrown. Also, Miami's DB got a hand full of facemask when the ball was on it's way down as well. Don't listen to bitter Miami fans, there was defeinitey a penalty

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Wow, out of control downvotes on this post.  There was nothing inflammatory said and people are getting blasted simply because they think a little time needs to be put between the mess Tressel left and him being welcomed back with open arms to the program.  I absolutely believe if you honor the 2002 team, he needs to be part of it.  I just think his involvement should simply be having his name announced and him waving to the crowd.

JT HAS to be there.  Honoring that '02 team would be a hollow excercise without Tress in the mix.

Would it be ideal to wait a little longer before the the University is seen honoring Tress given all that transpired?  Possibly.  However, the fact of the matter is, this year is the 10th anniversary of the 2002 National Championship team, and this is a moment the University, the team, and the fans deserve to celebrate, even if the timing is a little inconvienient.    Tressel was such an integral part of that team and what they accomplished, any celebration of the '02 team would be incomplete without his presence.

+1 on the Vest Out!

I'm so happy to hear this and hope it will be confirmed soon.  I understand the impulse to keep him away for longer because of the controversy, but there's no length of time and no penance terrible enough that would make non-OSU-fans suddenly approve of him or us.  Any celebration of 2002 has to have Clarett and Tressel.  I just wish I could be there in person to avoid the inevitable twenty on-screen graphics about scandal! and controversy! and stupid commentary from whoever ends up self-righteously talking over it.

@OH-Kee PA - Tiberi interviewed him this week and he said he will be there. Tiberi works for Columbus news station and Bill Greene spoke with him last night at the Aurora game and stated he will be there.

Edit: Could we please cut down on the downvotes and please stay on topic I wanted to start this thread as a salute to the man and your fav moments whether you agreed with how it ended or not, thanks in advance.

Gamble was mugged during the last drive for OSU.  If that would have been called, they would have had first down and been able to run out the clock.  There should not have been overtime.

Not only was Gamble mugged on that drive, he was ruled out of bounds when replay showed he was in. No replay back then to challenge the call. Had either of those things been called, Buckeyes get the ball back and win in regulation.

EvanstonBuckeye's picture
EvanstonBuckeye on 10 Nov 2012 - 3:38pm #

Gamble shakes off two (2!) shirt-stretching, non-called interferences to secure the ball along the sideline with 2:18 left, but it's called incomplete. Would have been a first down and the Buckeyes would have run out the clock, or wound it down to a couple of seconds. As it was, punt return set up Miami for tying FG.

Tressel dilemma will never leave everyone happy, but it might be perfect timing. JT eturns as coach of '02 team while Meyer has possibly undefeated team in his first year. That it's the 10-year anniversary of NC in Meyer's first year and Urban might have chance to run the table vs. Michigan cannot be overlooked in terms of serendipity.

Pam beat me to it! Did give me a chance to go back and watch the play. Man, Dan Fouts is a douche.

As long as it doesn't take away from the current coaching staff. I agree if u are going to honor the 02 team JT needs to be there. However, Agree with BT25, I don't want him giving speeches or talking with players. The boys need to be focused and I fear this may unfocus them.  I also think it could over shadow Meyer and his first beat down of Michigan. Urban deserves all credit possible for this new era and I want him to enjoy the experience and not having the crowd chant tressel .
