I personally feel like if Coach Tressel gets back into coaching, it'll be at a smaller program. With all due respect to Coach Tressel's abilities, I don't see why a bigtime university like Tenn would want to bother having to deal with a coach that has that kind of NCAA rules violation baggage when the other potential options (Jon Gruden, Kirby Smart, Gary Patterson) have similar upside imo.
That said, Arkansas hired John L. Smith--which I never thought would happen again ANYWHERE. So it shows you just how much I know (very little to nothing) haha.
Are they gonna wait 3 more years till he is actually eligible to coach in NCAA? He doesn't coach till the 5 year show cause is over and that isn't debatable.
@adamant Show-cause doesn't stop him from being eligible to coach, he just has penalties put upon him that would restrict him from being able to do his job as well (does anyone have a link to the specifics of the penalty?), which is why universities wouldn't be as likely to hire him.
Agreed TennBuck above...Matt Hayes is a weasel. However, I can see Tress being "considered" but not hired at Tenn. With the trouble their former Basketball coach brought with his recruiting oopsie and subsequent firing...I can't see them bringing Tress in with his lying to the NCAA a couple years ago. I could be wrong but doubt I am. Watch for Tress to be waiting in the wings for the Akron job or another MAC team and then move on after some success there. Can't see him stopping and retiring after what happened to end things at OSU...just not the way the Vest wanted to go out IMHO.

It's a pretty week show cause from what I read on SI
The committee gave Tressel a five year show-cause, but the penalty only has teeth for the first five weeks of Tressel's first season, when he must miss games. He also must miss that season's bowl game. Tom, I saw your team on TV this season. We could reanimate Vince Lombardi, put him on your sideline and your team might not make a bowl game in 2012. So Tressel's postseason ban is essentially meaningless in your case. Basically, you can get one of the best coaches in the history of the game, and all it will cost you is five games and a progress report submitted to the NCAA every six months. Tressel can still recruit. He can still hire a staff. All he has to do is sit out five weeks of meetings, practices and games.
Tennessee already has the NCAA in house due to Pearl so this wouldnt cause any extra hardship other than the 5 game ban.
With that said however Tressell ball wouldnt fly anywhere. I would imagine he would try to find a good offensive coordinator however but that might be hard to do. Most of the good ones are trying to find HC positions themselves.
That 5-year "show-cause" clause Tressel now has is beyond overkill.
Give me a break, NCAA. Trying to make an example of a good guy like Coach Tress.
Look at the Penn State child rape cover-up ---- guys like Larry Johnson, Sr. & Tom Bradley (haaaad to have known what was going on) should be banned for life in comparison to Tressel's over-the-top punishment for his minor transgressions.
agree, BUCKS, I don't know if Tressel can appeal, but if he can he should. He doesn't deserve a 5 yr. show cause. That's the biggest fraud of a penalty I've seen. I could see 1-2 years, perhaps. But, five?!? c'mon man! That's nutso!
Whether people want to admit it or not - JTs style of football is what is winning Championships in the SEC. It's almost exactly what Saban does at least, with Saban being a bit more aggresive & obviously having tremendous talent at Alabama.
If Tressel wants back in, this could actually happen, the show cause really means that the school is taking a big risk with him - it's not a coaching death sentence (although there would be hoops to jump through). But I have a hard time seeing him at an SEC school...or any school not located in Ohio, and I can't see him having the passion he had for the Buckeyes. Still, this is interesting & I won't say it can't happen because you never know...

Coach Tressel's "penalty" is just a travesty.. just a travesty.
That being said, if I had to point him for another HC job, I would have to say that Nebraska would be a spectacular fit. For me, Coach Tressel is very much like a Tom Osborne with respect to personality, values, and the way they run football programs.
As an aside, Coach covering for some of his players getting tattoos for autographs, doesn't change my opinion of him. Something people seem to forget, is that following rules doesn't make one a good person, nor does the opposite always hold true. In other words, adherence to rules does not necessarily equate with good morality. And to be blunt, I probably would have done the same thing as Coach Tressel, while telling the kids involved to basically "cut that &^% out, or you're gone."
I think Tressel would be perfect for the UK football job honestly. They aren't going to win a national title there ever so they don't need to worry about restrictions that may get put on him by the show cause. He's proven he could retain instate recruits very well. Even UK Football isn't a hard sell to in state kids. Some of the best high school athletes the state has ever had like Tim Couch, Dennis Johnson, Derek Smith and Jared Lorenzon all stayed in state. If they would of been more competitive the last couple of years they probably would of landed Collinsworth's kid too.
Kentucky isn't a great state for recruiting but my guess is he would keep he would be more competitive for the great athletes from around the state, which if you look at the last few years there have been decent players coming from Kentucky. He could also pick off some of those 3 and lower 4 star guys from Ohio that Urban doesn't look at. I also think his format of tough D and field position would work well in the SEC. I don't think Florida would come in and smack them around by 40 points anymore. They may only win 2 or 3 conference games per year but it's better than the 0 or 1 they are pulling off now.
Interesting. But I don't trust what Matt Hayes says.

Keep your filthy SEC hands off the Senator. :/
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
The Vest was, and still is, a great coach. I'd love to see him back on the sideline again.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
Don't see it with 4 (or is it 3?) years on the show-cause remaining
4-6 seconds of relentless effort
Show. Cause.
They would hate his offensive. Doesn't Tressel have sit out first 5 games.

If J.T. went to Knoxville, the first thing the Vols would do, would be to schedule a Home and Home with Michig@n.
And it would by wise to take stock in the company making these:
Tennessee already has the NCAA in house due to Pearl so this wouldnt cause any extra hardship other than the 5 game ban.

Tress is done with coaching.
If he goes anywhere I hope its another Ohio team
O H I O is the Buckeye State
My guess would be Baldwin-Wallace to finish his coaching career.

Tressleball fits in well with the trends of offense at bama Florida and lsu currently.

@UrbanWoodrowEarlTressel I also agree and give you a +1 for your name... cool

Maybe it's my own personal feeling but I don't want to see Tress on any other sideline. He's the patron saint of football in Ohio!

I hate the idea of seeing Tress on the sideline of any other big program.
That said, I hope he gets to finish out his career anywhere he wants.
