I love JT but no thanks! The Browns already punt too much and kick too many field goals. What the Browns need is an innovator from college like Chip Kelly or an established NFL coach. The team has some talent but has no leadership from Shurmur and the play calling is awful so as a Browns fan I want the head coach to be someone who can put points on the board.
idk how i feel abt that i love tress and do think he would be a good nfl head coach possibly but im not exactly sold on that and i need my browns to be good soon hopefully. i think we will get andy reid when he gets fired by the eagles
And the browns don't need washed up old coaches either. I like the idea of someone like Chip Kelley but that wouldn't happen nobody would believe he could make it work. Nick Saban would be the favored college coach to come to Cleveland. But it's tough to get someone in Cleveland we aren't exactly a hot spot
Please, no. I am a Jim Tressel fan, but not for the Browns. I think JT was very well suited for the college game, and college guys making the jump to the NFL (esp. with no prior NFL experience) have not fared well. That is why I am not an advocate of Chip Kelly either.
I haven't decided who I want for the Browns yet, but I'm hoping it is someone who has coached in the league before. Not necessarily as a HC, but the Browns need a strong leader with all of their young guys.
No they won't....tressel is too much of a micromanager to be an NFL coach. He was a great college coach, but the NFL is a different animal. Last season at OSU was evident at how much Tressel controls his teams. In the NFL, you gotta let your assistants do their jobs. It would be good for Tressel to get to coach his favorite NFL team, but it won't happen. If we see the vest on any sideline again, at any level, I'll be shocked. They might think it would make the fans happy since most in the state love Tress, but I don't think they would be too thrilled. I'm not a Browns fan, so I can't speak to that. They need a coach who's "been there" to fix the problems on the lake. I don't think a former NCAA coach with no pro experience is who you should bring in.
Disclaimer: Not a Browns fan nor a Browns hater. I couldn't care less if they go to the SB, or if they go winless. As I have no horse in this race whatsoever I think I can be very objective here. Jim Tressel is a winner. He's won and won big wherever he's been. I don't know what it is about the guy, but players respond to him. In the NFL everybody can X and O, so it's the guys who can lead and to whom players respond who are the winners. There's something about Mike Tomlin (not a Steeler fan either, just picking a name) that players respect and respond to. Something that Norv Turner doesn't have. I believe that Tressel has the "it" factor. Something intangible. Jim Harbaugh has "it". Romeo Crennel does not. Tressel certainly isn't a schematic super genius, but I don't think winning in the NFL has a whole lot to do with scheme or playbook. Everybody has great players/athletes, but not everybody has a head coach smart enough to manage, motivate and keep fresh 53 egocentric personalities over the 16 week grind that is an NFL season. I think Tressel could do that. The only concern I'd have if the Browns hired JT would be that he NOT be the primary coach involved in the development of Brandon Weeden. If Tressel has a weakness it's that he fancies himself a quarterback guru and nothing could be further from the truth IMO.
I think Marty Schottenheimer deserves a second chance in Cleveland. He had a great first time from what my father tells me about the 80's. I'm willing to try anybody just to get to the playoffs and be seen as a real NFL team. I mean look at the respect the Lions got for one year in the playoffs.
How many coaches have the Browns had since 1999? None of them have been able to strike magic for more than a flash in the pan. Something tells me Tressel isn't going to be any more successful than any of them others, and that's not a knock on Tressel or anything - that team needs more than just a good coach to get turned around.
I'll do it, pretty good pay, zero-little expectations. I can stand a few eggs thrown at my house ;) Heck, I would be a killer cost save too compared to other options.
I'm sorry - I'm more of a Bengals fan, although the pro game just doesn't interest me these days...Maybe I have no business here but I think a lot of people underestimate JT. I think they see him as a Boy Scout not cut out to manage superstars & egos. Maybe they think he's just too conservative. I think the guys a born winner. He is getting old though - I will admit that much, but I see JT as a guy who has the brains to win at any level & I imagine his pro game would look very different than his college game...although he would definitely have to give up some of the micromanagement.
Probably a moot point either way, I agree with those who think he may be done coaching for good.

Gruden or Cowher....my Brownies something big to happen. Even Cribbs is starting to chirp. Holmgren in the front office didnt work like we'd hoped......what next? WHEN WILL WE STOP LOSING!!?!?!?!?!?!

Nothing in JT's game makes me think he can be the CEO needed to run a pro franchise.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

O'Deez330
stark county football
He can't be any worse than what we got! I bet he would have 3 wins at least

The Browns need to lure Cowher out of retirement/broadcasting. Problem solved.
I would hate to put Tressel through that...
I love Tressel, but no thanks. And yes, I know he'd probably be better than what we have right now, but again, no thanks.
Does anyone feel Cowher would be like Schembeckler coming to OSU
Wherever you are, there you be!
Might work out, no silly NCAA rules to worry about.
Tomorrow

I acutally think he would be a great NFL coach. He is more of an "executive" than hands on. He gives direction.

Class of 2010.
Love the senator-not for my Browns
Bring back Marty!

So much craziness in this thread. Just to address a couple:
1. Marty? Really? You can't be serious. He is closing in on 70 years old. Yes 70.
2. Browns won't have a problem getting a good coach to "come here". This is the NFL. Coaches kill for these jobs. All of them.
3. "Even Cribbs is starting to chirp"? All that dude does is run his freaking mouth, how is that something new?
No.
