Friends of mine (family of five - 3 adults, 1 tween and 1 teen) aim to score 5 tix via scalpers. $1K is the max they'll pay, for the five.
If they can't get in, where's a family-friendly place to go near the Shoe, to watch and eat?

Hate to burst their bubble but theres zero chance they get 5 tix for $1k
You will be lucky to get half that many tickets for that amount of money..
Good luck with the tickets. As for a place to go if you can't get tickets, there's always Bdubs on the corner of High and Lane.

You can find tickets on Stubhub for around 200. Just a quick look on there showed several available with 2 seats together for under 200. Also, you can find tickets on the 11W link around 200 each. Most are much more, particularly if there are 2 or more together. You will not do better with a scalper - they will be getting max $$ before the game unless the weather absolutely sucks (bad enough so people can not make it to the stadium).
Watching the game on campus in a family friendly atmosphere is possible. There are usually many people who do that, so the venues will be very crowded. The Buffalo Wild Wings on Lane is family friendly and does accomodate a large crowd. Also there is a Champs on Olentangy River Road that is poplular for familys. Good free parking if you get there early - you can park and have a bite and leave your car there for the game - allows you to get to the stadium to enjoy the pregame activities, try to get tickets, and return to the comfort of the restaurant for the game. Just make sure you check in at the restaurant early to get a pass for your car.
Another viewing option is Woody's in the Union, it's small, so it will probably be packed.

If you want 5 seats you will pay 2k for all of them.
I would definitely try to find a warm place with some great HD tvs like B Dubs, it's awesome to try to take your family to something like The Game, but the cost is outrageous, especially this year.
The price of the tickets will depend on how they're set up. If they want all 5 tickets together, it's gonna be close to 2 grand. If they don't mind splitting up I could see it being 1k-1.2k.
For reference, I got three tickets together a few weeks ago on either TiqIQ or Stubhub (dont' recall which at the moment) C deck, 50 yd line, row 11 for $300 each. I'd recommend they do some online shopping for their tickets beforehand to see if they can figure a deal out.
