Don't know if tOSU has been doing this for awhile, but yesterday was the first time I noticed it. Whenever the Illinois offense was facing a 3rd down, the stadium bell would ring 3 or 4 times before the snap.
It seemed like an ominous warning that meant "You're not going to make it". I thought it was cool. Was that the first time they did that? Wonder who's idea that was.
Update: Hearing test scheduled.

I can't give a time frame, but they've been doing it for as long as I can remember (which isn't that long considering I started following OSU football in 04 when I transferred to OSU).
^^^Wow. Can't believe I never noticed that before.

Lot's of stadiums play that bell sound on third down.

From wikipedia: "Tolling" a bell refers to the slow ringing of a bell, about once every four to ten seconds. It is this type of ringing that is most often associated with a death, the slow pace broadcasting a feeling of sadness as opposed to the jubilance and liveliness of quicker ringing.
Ironically, we're usually jubilous when we hear it, the other team, not so much. And while I don't know when exactly it started, I can't remember a time when they weren't doing that. It's gotten to the point that I react to it nstinctively, like a mother does to the sounds of crying baby.
i'm baffled you've never noticed/heard it before. you can hear it from home on TV.
I could hear it on TV when I was in high school. Surprised you never noticed it.

What you are hearing is actually a recording being played over the PA system. The stadium bell would not be loud enough to hear over the crowd. And, yes, they have been doing it for some time. Many other schools do as well. But, the first time I recall hearing it was in the shoe - don't know if that is the case. The stadium bell only chimes after a victory (at least that is what I recall).
It's actually the start of Hells Bells from AC/DC..........
Yep, it's the start of Hells Bells as menioned and they've been doing it for at least the 15+ years I've been following OSU. I know one thing, my son will remember it. Yesterday was his first game and an all around perfect day aside from him turtling his head everytime he heard it. Of course he's not 3 yet so hopefully that will change in time.
They should play the intro to "Thunderstruck" or "Killin in the name of". "Enter Sandman" would be bad a$$. Every stadium plays the bells on third down. Our Defense is playing better, they deserve their own 3rd down intro!! Toss some songs out there.

I miss them playing Stranglehold for kick-offs but that really only worked when Nuge was still here... Was holding out hope that they'd play some Little John when we had that punter named Skeet on the team but then he went and got himself kicked off the team for smoking the reefer.

Until we shore up our kick coverage, I'd rather not play anything to call attention to it.
On that note, can't Basil reach the end zone? We don't see many touch backs.
The plan is to not reach the end zone. The coaching staff has stated that they are comfortable enough with the kick coverage and believe they can stop the other team inside the 25. Now that injuries have taken ahold of the "Piranhas", not sure if that is still the case.
