Rushing the field after scUM game?

I know students have been talking about this and it is the "unofficial" bowl game. After OSU wipes the field with scUM, what are the odds the field is rushed?

Agh, I'd rather we rushed the field after a perfect season that means we're going to the NC game. Also, maybe beating a UM team that is a little better than 8-3.

If it does cap off an undefeated season, maybe. Rushing the field for Wisconsin was different last year. It was a night game and a huge upset. If Michigan were 11-1 coming into The Game, yes I would rush the field, but as it is right now I don't think OSU should rush the field.

Yes, but it's Urban's first season, and if it's 12-0?  That's like unheard of for a coach's first season with a new team.  It would truly be a special, magical season.  Let the celebration begin with a field rush if it happens!

I hate to look ahead to TSUN right now, especially when Ohio State is going to such a hostile environment this weekend.

This being said, IF Ohio State walks into Madison and gets a win this weekend, and then they beat TSUN next week, I'd love... I repeat I'D LOVE to see the fans rush the field. Going 12-0 is a feat in itself. But doing it after a 6-7 season the previous year, and getting a revenge win from last seasons game vs those dirtbags up north, it's only necessary to rub it in their face.

But it starts with the Badgers. Let them play this game first, then it's beat TSUN week.

Time and Change will surely show, how firm thy friendship O-HI-O!

It's not about beating Michigan, it's about defying the odds and revelling in the joy of a perfect season (judging that we get past Wisconsin, nothing's guaranteed these days).  I've never understood the adversion to rushing the field; it's not like we do it often, and during certain circumstances I believe it to be completely warranted.  Last year vs. Wisconsin was due to the cinematic finish, and it was a singular bright spot in a terrible year.  Did it really warrant rushing the field?  Probably not, but who cares?  Let the people celebrate.

An undefeated season is f*cking hard, folks.  There's a reason we've only had a handful of them in our 100+ year history.  To cap off a perfect season with a win against our resurgent storied rival at home would be a perfect ending to a season that even NCAA sanctions cannot take away from.  Damn right that's worth celebrating.

I won't have the privilege to be there, but I would be all for rushing the field. To the rest of the nation, our season means nothing. Rushing the field after a perfect season, I'd say that at the very least shows people that it still means something to us. That's all that matters

It's 5 o'clock somewhere, & Michigan still sucks

Also, it's a bit odd that Steele is waffling from his preseason prediction of OSU going 12-0. If my brother's 4-6 FCS team put up a couple of hundred yards on the ground against Indiana , would thru be favoured over OSU? Sorry, not buying the Wisky hype.

Im not big on rushing the field unless it is a large upset, shows we didnt necessarily expect to win and that the W surprised us.(ok when sends us to NC games)  Last year against Wisconsin was ok becuase we had a rough year and nobody expected us to win, especially with such a fantastic finish.  However, if it marks a 12-0 season I think I could make an exception to the rule, even if we arent going to a bowl game.  I mean there has only been 5 perfect seasons so it would be a historic moment.

I rushed the field back in '02. Took a chunk of turf from the center of the "O", which can now be found in the front yard of 1832 Summit Street.  It's an experience I'll never forget.

However, on the way in, this guy next to me took a weaponized load of mace to his grill.  I caught the residual over spray so it didn't suck too bad.  I got to pat Krenzel on the back and then on my way out I watched the masses fail at tearing down the goal post in front of the student section.  After I got out (I simply walked out of the tunnel) I stumbled into Larkins (where the RPAC is now) to use the facilities.  The same guy was in the shower next to some other poor bastard with their faces under the water both screaming in agony.

I won't get into what I experienced west of High Street that night.  Let's just say my point is, if you rush the field be careful of mace and don't start any riots.   :)

Don't worry, I've been wanting to post forum(s) in honor of rivalry week and rushinig the field but I think its best to not put the cart before the horse yet. @BME,

Players cannot afford to put the cart before the horse.  Fans?  We can put that cart wherever we want it, before the horse, on top of the horse, strapped to a rocket and heading toward the moon.  Maybe you're supertitious, maybe you're protecting yourself against disappointment.  Me?  I'm already wondering whether Urban can lead OSU to back-to-back undefeated seasons, and I'm confident that my wondering will have absolutely no effect on whether or not it happens.

I was on the field twice in my lifetime. Once in a "meaningless" game against Michigan 98. To our credit we didnt get to see many of those victories while I was a student in the 90's. So rushing the field was a huge knee jerk reaction to the surprise that we actually beat Michigan!

The second time was in 2002. A much more warranted rush of the field for sure. It was fun to get on the field and slap players back. If you have a chance to beat Michigan and go undefeated (if we win this week of course) then I say go ahead and do it. You dont get a chance to do it much in football so take the opportunity to create a memory!

Ahh that 2002 scUM game was special...  Still have a piece of that turf in a samich baggy with my student season ticket from 13A.  Patted Doss on the back where he was kneeling in the O at mid field.  Hoisted my cousins husband on the goal post.  Roommate was holding up one of Krezels legs on the cover of SI.  What a day that was...

Lets not too ahead of ourselves, still have to varment hunt at 3:30 this weekend.  If it happens next week, it'll not only put a big exclamation mark on the season and send all of the seniors out the right way, pave the way for gray boxes of goodness, and hopefully leave that unfinished taste for the team going into the offseason.  I'm sure Mariotti would love that.

I would also have to disagree with Hail -- not sure how you can belittle our fans potentially rushing the field if we are fortunate enough to go 12-0 (obviously we have two huge battles left, first), when your fans rushed the field (not to mention Denard's ridiculous "grenade" incident) after beating the worst Ohio State team since the 1800s. I understand it's been a while since you had beaten us, but our team lost to just about everybody last year -- eeking out a 6 point win in Ann Arbor over a team as bad as our 2011 squad was, isn't something to be too proud of. So to use your own quote right back at you: "act like you've been there before".

So you basically implied above that it's classless to do it, and yet at the bottom of the same post you attempt to rationalize why your fanbase did it to us last year, and here we are 5 minutes ago, you say that you wouldn't do it if you could be the one making the decision:

I didn't belittle anyone.  If you guys want to rush the field, have at it.  If I had the overall say if Michigan were to rush the field in an identical situation, I would say no.

I think Hail's intent was to say that "Rushing the field" is more a celebratory act reserved for monumental upsets or long-starved victories over rivals.  I don't necissarily agree with this viewpoint, but he wasn't trying to belittle us.

Honestly, since the year started, a majority of the commentariat have been regarding an OSU victory in The Game as if it were a certainty.  If it's such an expected victory, does it really warrant rushing the field?  I'd normally say no, but considering the fact that (hypothetically, of course) we'd be playing for an undefeated season, and that it's our de-facto bowl game, I'd consider it a most worthy occasion.

razrback16's picture

IMO I also wouldn't be all for rushing the field, either in Michigan's case last year (embarrassing that they did IMO given how bad we were), or this year for us based on it just being a rival. Now if we were 12-0 celebrating the fact that these guys went from an awful 6-7 squad to a 12-0 squad, I can understand why they would, but I've never been a big proponent of rushing the field in too many cases. I just take issue with the hypocrisy present in Hail's post, and I generally like Hail and respect his input, I just didn't like the "it's ok when we do it, but not when you do it" premise that it appears he is advocating based on the posts I quoted.

How is that hypocritical, Razr?  If Ohio State hadn't beat Michigan in 7 years and they won, I would say go for it.  If they hadn't beat Wisconsin in 4 years, I'd be for it.  If they were playing a top 10 Nebraska team and won in the final seconds, I'd say go for it.  I'm not opposed to rushing the field.  If Michigan wrapped up a perfect season, but couldn't play in the post season, was a heavy favorite at home and had won 7 of the last 8 against ohio state, I wouldn't rush the field.  If you all wanted to, sobeit.  A differing opinion isn't hipocrisy.

Hodge summed it up pretty well.  It doesn't matter what your record was last year.  You may have been 6-5 entering the game but you also had Posey back and OSU played their best (at least second best) game against us.  It wouldn't have mattered if you were 0-11.  Record doesn't matter in rivalry games, especially The Game.  They didn't rush the field because they won, they rushed the field because they won for the first time in almost a decade.  It was huge monkey off the proverbial Michigan back.  It was a rejoicing and a time that RichRod was finally put to rest.

Bhop, I have been ignoring your posts for the last 6 months.  But, by all means, continue on like I care about your opinion of me and M man or anyone else posting here.

You make the implication that it would be classless for a potential (again, we haven't done it yet so this is all hypothetical) rushing of the field by OSU fans after going 12-0 following a 6-7 campaign where we lost to everyone with a pulse (and a few without), while attempting to rationalize UM fans rushing the field after winning by 6 points at home against the worst Ohio State team that's ever taken the field (and in fairness to the players, the disaster of 2011 was far more on the coaching staff than the players, IMO) during the lifetime of anyone currently living with the exception of what appears to be 3 folks who would've been infants during the 1897 season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_people#Ten_verified_oldest_people_li...). The case you're making is not only hypocritical. It's utterly absurd.

I can respect your difference of opinion that you think it's ok for UM fans to rush the field after winning last year, that is fine -- but don't say it's not hypocritical to then turn around and imply that the conditions under which the original poster in this thread has put forth for a rushing of the field by OSU fans is in some way classless. Give us all a break, here.

Edit: Just to add as others have mentioned, this isn't just the Michigan game for us. It's our season-ender. It's our bowl game, our NCG.

Yeah Hail your never gonna win this arguement buddy so I would just leave it alone lol. Considering this is the biggest game on our schedule this year (and every year) we would want nothing more than to curb stomp scUM and send them off licking their wounds to cap off a 12-0 season. Whats not to celebrate?? What because its OSU and we've won alot of games in the past?? Those past games have nothing to do with the players that are on the field now working their tails off trying to get better everyday. Im all for storming the field. It will more than likely be young 18-25 yr old kids storming the field so letting them show a little emotion after a long hard fought season is perfectly fine in my eyes...

Hail, is it because OSU is on probation??

Any other year or team, who finishes undefeated would rush the field regardless, especially if the last game came against your biggest rival, and probably the biggest rivalry in all of sports...

On a normal year, the bucks going 12-0 would either mean NC game (after the big10 champ of course) or Rose Bowl, and students would still rush the field.  An undefeated season, is an undefeated season.  We have no bowl game, finishing perfect totally justifies rushing the field.  Even if it is against the Wolverqueens who should already have 5 losses.  But I suppose they'll get #4 vs us and #5 in their bowl game.

I just wonder who it is that keeps giving downvotes to all the people who are debating hail on rushing the field?  It certainly wouldn't be a fellow OSU fan, would it?

If not an OSU fan, then who could it be...

ps:  I keep countering your downvotes with an upvote everytime I see one!

@buckeye.33:  "We rushed the field because it was a last second win over a rival we hadn't beat in 4 years.  Same thing when they rushed the field last year in AnnArbor after beating OSU for the first time in 8 years." Hail's actual quote...

Hail...what does ^this^ reply sound like to you???  It sounds like a hypocrite to me...sorry.  Whether you ignore me or not...it's true.  Your point(s) are the ones that are moot...

Much like everything else, Michigan fans seem to think everything is about them If Ohio State were 7-4, no, there wouldn't be a rushing the field by the fans.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I have a few things to say about the topic and this thread.

1) The fans talking about 12-0 won't jinx 12-0 it has no bearing for to what happens on the field.  If the Buckeyes lose they lose, and it really doesn't matter what we talk about on here.

2) I think rushing the field should be restricted to schools who have never won anything. I TYPICALLY believe rushing the field or court is dumb and nothing good can come of it.

3) That being said if this team beats Michigan and ends up 12-0, they should absolutely rush the field and celebrate like a bunch of drunken fools lol.  If I were at the game and in the stands my ass would be out there and I'm a grown assed man who has no business doing such things.  Let's face it, 12-0 is our national championship this year.  The Michigan game is our bowl game.  12-0 has only happened what 5 times in Buckeye history?  This senior class deserves to go out with a bang.  Hell I think they should all be carried off the field.  Then Urban completing a perfect record in his first season, and beating Michigan his first shot.  Yeah, rush the field Buckeye fans, but don't make a habit of it.

@hail, this is the first time I've seen you involved in a thread so passionately in a LONG time.  I think you have to step back from the situation to bring a fair perspective to the discussion.  tOSU this year is unlike any other year in tOSU history thanks to the NCAA.  The scUM game this year is essentially our bowl game, our national championship game, and our revenge from last year game all rolled into one.  This years THE GAME, means soooo much more than any other year (granted #1 vs #2 or the game to go to the National Championship mean a lot as well), given how emotionally invested all tOSU fans (especially the passionate ones) are in this years team.  If we win (and I don't think it's a given), rushing the field will be a forgone conclusion, because of the reasons mentioned above.  I get what you're saying, but....you won't win this argument here this year.

BT,

#3 hits it on the head.  It is about the Seniors going out as winners and undefeated and the fans celebrating with them for all the great memories they have blessed us with.

This team is honestly my favorite Buckeye team I've ever watched.  They aren't the best, but they are absolutely my favorite.  I don't get that emotionally involved in sports, it's a diversion from my hectic work week and other stresses in my life which drain a lot of my emotions, but I feel about this team the way I felt about sports when I was a kid.  If they lose, I'm probably going to throw a tantrum and may even cry.  If they go 12-0, I can't pretty much promise I'll cry.  I never get this emotional about a team and this year's Reds team had me that way and this year's Buckeyes team has me feeling this way.  I've been blessed this season to have my 2 favorite teams be a pretty special group of guys who were really a joy to watch.

@ Ahh Saturday,

This was funny when I read it so I took this with a grain of salt. I think you know me well in that I am protecting myself against disappointment. I haven't sip the "We're gonna beat Wisconsin due to them using a 3rd string QB" Kool-aid yet. It probably doesn't help that I've been there before in 2010 to watch us lose. So for now I'm cautions.

Edit: I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I predicted that we go 10-2 this seaon with a lost against Wisconsin... Lets put a spin on this question since their seems to be a lot of IFs. If we lose to Wisconsin, and we beat Michigan to go 11-1, do we still rush the field?

OK... so now we are 11-0... with only TSUN between us and the glorious bragging rights that come with an undefeated season. I sit in 30A down near the student section and think that if we win it would be awesome if the entire field is covered with fans singing Carmen Ohio... The team deserves to know how great an accomplishment it is, and how proud they've made their fans and the whole state.

I have a cousin who thought our fans were wrong to rush the field after last year's Wisconsin game.  He kept trolling me about it and I almost unfriended him.  We're better now, but he's still wrong.

If we're undefeated, I say rush on!  (I'll be in B-Deck, though, so I won't be able to join in.)

My other daughter is a senior and was unable to rush the field on the two other occasions during her time at tOSU. She will be chomping at the bit should good triumph evil Saturday afternoon.

why is this even a topic? How about we win the game first. THEN, instead of PLANNING a rushing of the field, how about we possibly rush the field out of pure excitement and randomness. That is what is supposed to happen.

@Buckeyebrowny919  Im not superstitious because its bad luck... I see what your saying about planning the rush but its all in fun and its not going to decide how the players are going to play. The whole season was a rollercoaster ride and what a finish it would be to see our enemy go down and then all the fans rush the field.

Second: I am watching "The Game" @ an Alumni game watch in Bloomington,Mn. and will rush the field(OK it will be the grassy knoll outside the bar) but I will be rushing the field at the Shoe in spirit as it shouild be done every year we win it !

You rush the field because:

1. Braxton's Heisman chances are that much realer.

2. We're 12-0 for crying out loud.

3. We may get an AP national championship nod.

4. WE JUST BEAT FREAKING MICHIGAN!!!

I rushed the field. At first I wasn't but then I realized, . . . how many Michigan game am I going to get to go to? How many undefeated seasons will we be a part of? How many times will we have a losing season made up for by a winning season? The verdict was clear. Rush that field!!!!

It was great being on the field again! (I was on last year after we beat Wisky).  The funniest part was, after 35 minutes or so, we decided to leave, and headed toward the ramp at the north endzone.  There was a huge bottleneck of fans leaving.  Well, the scUM band hand't left yet, and were still sitting in their section.  Droves of fans are exiting, walking right by them, yelling and swearing at them.  Their band was protected by 7 highway patrolman.  In the 15 minutes it took to get out of the bottleneck, the crowd sang We Don't Give a Damn About the Whole State of M1%$ig&n about 15 times.  Between the singing (I thought of it more as a serenade) and the yelling, the band was absolutely terrified.  I bet they had to stay for at least another hour or so.  Absolutely hilarious.
