Players React to Meyer's CoY Snub

Have to love this...

Its a total joke of an award at this point IMO.

Man how on earth does taking a 6-7 team and molding them into a 12-0 team not get you CoY award? BOB lost at home to a MAC school then lost to freaking Virginia. Yeah some players left but he wasn't exactly working with a bare cupboard and Mauti was a tremendous leader...

I believe that I saw that Ramzy posted that it has been 33 seasons and 3 undefeated ones since an OSU head coach won the award.  That is crazy, but in someways an honor in itself that everyone assumes you will be good and therefore you can't exceed expectations (which is essentially what this award is all about).

The thing is, though, we finally did exceed expectations in 2012. A recovery season to about 9-3--esssentially the kind of year Michigan had in 2011, when Brady Hoke was hailed nationwide for "reviving" the program, never mind that the revival had actually begun in RichRod's second season--was basically what the optimists were laying out as a best-case scenario for this year's Buckeyes. All they did instead was utterly dominate the conference.

Even if one concedes that Penn State exceeded expectations more than the Bucks (which I don't), going undefeated and actually being the best team in the B1G ought to count somewhere in there as a tiebreaker.

I agree, and this might be Urban Meyer's last chance to win it because everyone is going to assume that all of the rest of his teams are more talented than this one.  What BO'B did was pretty impressive, turning Moxie into the best passer in the B1G is no small task.  And dealing with that shitstorm is the most unenviable task ever.  However they lost 2 horrible games (Ohio, UVA) which puts their 8-4 season behind Hokes with a similar talent level.

Honestly, it's hard to say that we overperformed in some ways because we are the most talented team in the B1G, and were last year.  We just waaaaay underperformed last year, so it makes the turnaround look even more drastic.  But since the main change was the coaching staff, I don't know how you couldn't give Urban the award for righting the ship.

As someone wiser than me said, it's merely the consolation prize for not being Ohio State.

Vince Lombardi would've lost to Ohio too, okay? It wasn't O'Brien's fault. Its hard to win with vastly superior talent... and homefield advantage... and an 11 point lead at halftime. Also, how can you blame him for losing to Virginia? The students are allowed to sit on the grass there, WHEREVER THEY WANT!!! Its like trying to coach in the Thunderdome! I'm impressed he got everyone home alive. Coach of the year? Coach of the Century!

The COY award always goes to a coach of a team who far exceeds their expectations.  Sadly, the reason Tress never won the award was because his teams were expected to be as good as they actually were.  Certainly, this OSU team exceeded expectations, but PSU exceeded their expectations by a wider margin than OSU did.  I still think Urban should be COY, but I'm not going to bash on BOB winning it...certainly not as much as I would bash the typical Ferentz win.

Class of 2010.

Does it really say that this award is based on exceeding expectations? Wasn't Penn St "expected" to beat Ohio and Virginia? And weren't they expected to win/ favored at home against tOSU?

Can't be mad at the B10 for being the B10. The B10 has become a haven for moral victories and "gentleman's agreements", winning is not the top priority. It's funny to think that the B10 used to be the premier football conference.

I know BoB winning coach of the year seems irrelevant to my point, but to me it's a reflection of the conference and where its priorities are. No fault to him, he did a fantastic job with what he had, but IMO when you have a 6-7 team go 12-0 when they had nothing to play for, and nobody would have faulted them for a 9-3 year, that's something special.

Gold stars all around. I'm surprised Kirk Ferentz didn't win it. Disgusting.

Ferentz can only win it every OTHER year.

He needs to shamefully underperform in the even years, so he can win it in the odd years

I dont get it.  Did anyone think PSU would go winless or something this year?  This will be their best team for 8+ years you can be sure of that.  5th year senior and a ton of talent returning on defense.  Oh yea and the B1G is a joke so there a guranteed 7 wins with the talent they had right there...

If Tressel didn't win it in 02, 06, or 07(it was suppose to be a rebuilding year), no coach here will ever win it again.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Just more Ohio State hate. Bring it on though, we're used to it, and so are our players and staff. It's nothing new. Hopefully it'll just create more fire for Urban to pound the $hit out of the Big Ten next year.

Being B1G coach of the year is like being the prom king. And who remembers the prom king? Fact of the matter is urban is the homecoming king...the most popular guy in school, the star quarterback, dating the head an cheerleader and puttin it to the rest of the squad on the side. You may ask youself why I'm using high school terms to describe this...because that's all it is. High school level bs. Urbans better at coaching than me. He recruits better. He wins all his games. His paycheck is bigger. Why should he get to be coach of the year? Its ok guys, really. I'm sure urban will sleep just fine tonight knowing that he went 12-0 and beat BoB where it mattered most...on game day.

More on the history of this most ridiculous of awards: back in 1982, they gave it to Dennis Green because he had taken a Northwestern team that had lost 33 straight games and gone 3-8.

That NW team was not who we thought they were, that's for sure.

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

It's this sort of little league mentality that keeps setting the B1G back and keeping them well behind the other power leagues. No wonder the B1G is a national laughing stock!

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

Great post!

But, maybe Stoneburner's Tweet isn't an endorsement of Meyer.

Afterall, Stoneburner's catch-count went down, under Meyer

Well according to the coaches in this league (and their all-conference votes) the players for Ohio State weren't as good as everyone thought so you'd think that would mean Meyer did an even stronger job this year. What gives? In all seriousness though I don't have a huge problem with this. It really could've gone either way and Urban was very very deserving. BoB had to put up with more than I can even conceive of, plus a handful of his best players decided to bolt from the team. I pegged PSU for 3 to maaaybe 4 wins this year and they obviously exceeded my expectations. When you think about it most people were pegging tOSU for 10 or so wins this year going in and weren't scoffing at the notion of going undefeated being a reality. Wish Urbz would've gotten it because he was just as deserving but when it comes down to it I have a hard time arguing against BoB...and don't think Urban really gives a shit anyway.

Seriously though, congrats to Bill O'Brien on the B1G COY Award. A prestigious fraternity that includes Ron Zook and John L. Smith.
