good i like the odds of gettin him. hopefully we see like 5-6 grey boxes after the scum game. whats really nice about this kid is hes def urbans type of guy silly athletic
If this year ends up w/ a 12-0 season and 5-6 grey boxes after The Game I'll go crazy waiting through the offseason. But Mitchell is a must get (even though according to ESPN's rankings he's really not that big of a deal).
Mitchell plays with a blatant passion for annihilating the ball carrier that is getting harder to find. He wants to get to every tackle and he brings bad intentions. Spielman will love this kid. I have no doubt he will be successful. When he won the SPARQ competition he talked about how hard he worked on being the best he could be. That's a winner right there.
"Great news but before we make him an OSU legend remember that we said the same stuff about Curtis Grant."
absolutely adamant73!! I get so tired of people proclaiming a retired jersey for a 17 yr old kid everytime one committs, then those same people will whine the next day and question the very same staff when they either offer someone they doubt or don't offer someone they wish they had.
I swear there should be an IQ test to take before being allowed to post on any recruiting related issue.
Still, you gotta hope one of these kids gets it. The kid is fast and plays with recklessness! I'm not saying he is the next Spielman but I like his film. I also still have hope for Grant.
I think Mitchell is a freak (laser timed 40 of 4.39 40 inch vertical) with the right coaching and good fortune of staying away from injuries I think the kid will be special!!
@Niblick- After searching the thread, no one was anything but excited after watching the kid. His highlight film, the performance he put on at the SPARQ competition, the way he speaks about hard work and also he comes from a very athletic family. No one said a thing about retiring a jersey, that was all Niblick. Those that come here and question others opinions stated on a site made up of opinions is possibly a call for an IQ test. Don't get it.
Don't forget, Grant is a true soph. He could still do very well. It may be Mitchell's Junior year before he becomes a serious contender for playing time. That won't mean he isn't a beast.
"Still, you gotta hope one of these kids gets it. The kid is fast and plays with recklessness! I'm not saying he is the next Spielman but I like his film. I also still have hope for Grant."
I agree with 3TECHNIQUE in that sooner or later one of the kids takes off at the position, early in their career. Laurinaitis was a 3 year AA, and I think he was our last LB to get it so early, but I also think Shazier is heading that way. Give Grant time, not all of our LB's were leading the defense as FR and SO's, but ended up doing well.
Recruiting is an inexact science, even when you're getting it done at the highest level like Meyer. I like our chances, however, by getting freakish athletes who are also aggressive and love to play the game and Mitchell seems to fit all of these requirements. Agree with GhillieBuckeye_ MC in that I'm not sure I want to use Grant as a poster boy for a bust as he still has two years left and kids develop at different speeds.
Have to remember some kids take longer to adjust to the speed of the game, on top of different schemes, AND on top of any other pressure from playing at a big time school...alot of people look at it as simple... "hey its football, just play and hit people"... I have confidence in Meyer's staff to help develope the likes of Grant and Perry, they will be tough...
^^^ Did you mean an amusement park?? Or are you suggesting that once Mitchell gets here, he'll be laying the hammer down on so many people that the Shoe will become a monument to abuse aka an abusement park?

I remember hearing that Mitchel's knock, while an athletic freak, is that he is not the most instinctual linebacker in the country. So while he obviously has to size and speed to be very good linebacker the fanebase cant label him as our saviour at linebacker. I know most of you think since we are weak at LB that he will come in and start right away. But that is unrealistic. He may have the body and skills of a staring college linebacker but in high school he is a man amongst boys. The step to college is a huge one and some get it right away (Shazier)and some take longer (Grant). We dont know how any recruit will handle the mental aspect of the game which is more important that having the physical skills, as demostrated by grant who despite his physical skill has clicked yet. that beingt said i would love to land Mitchell because if he can grasp the game mentall he has the ability to be great. But we have to give him a chance and not label him a bust as a sophmore becaus ewe place unrealistic expectations on him

@Lougroza...I wasn't referring to anyone specifially nor anyone in this thread. Just agreeing with Adamant73's point of "be careful in getting your expectations too high due to star ratings and combine numbers". We've all seen it 1000 times. Fans get so worked up over a kids star ratings and combine numbers, then when they dont pan out their hair is on fire and call them busts and they wind up being worked up for nothing. Yes, those people that fall into that category should be required to either take an IQ test or never discuss recruiting, EVER.
if it was as simple as many make it to be, our 2008 class would have won 3 national titles as we had 11 kids playing in the Army AA game.
I agree Shazier was talented for being a true freshman but even he didn't grasp the play at his position like Katzenmoyer did. I see great things ahead for Shazier and I am ecstatic that he is finally starting to play under control. he makes far less mistakes now than he did at the beginning of the year. We can consider ourselves fortunate if Mitchell absorbs the defensive fundamentals and responsibilities as fast as Shazier.
I'm just glad he's visiting. If Ohio State leads and his first visit to campus is for The Game. well so far as I'm concerned it's Game Over with his recruiting. That weekend is going to be HUGE for recruiting. Mitchell will be in this class and he will eventually be a great LB. I also think it's completely unrealistic to just expect he'll walk right into a starting role. People forget and are quick to just dismiss or even give up on all those talented LB recruits Urban brought on last year, and Grant. LB will be thin on experience overall next year, but I don't expect it to be a position of weakness. There were some very talented guys in that 2012 class.
I agree with Alex...I think it's taking Grant longer to understand were he's supposed to be in certain situations with OSU's defense. It takes a lot of adjustments from HS to College ball which Mike will encounter as well (I personally believe they'll bring in Auston Johnson to help with lack of experienced LB's at OSU). To make blanket statements that ppl should have IQ tests and such is just as silly as the comments being made on occasion IMO.

Doen't matter about star rating or any of that. With the current need for help at LB, Mitchell is very welcome to come here and with his skill set should push the incumbants at the very least. Will he be an instant starter and an all-time buckeye? Who knows. but we should all be very excited about this kid because at the moment, the best option after Shazier is a bit of a dropoff.
Let the celebration begin!!
Very excited about this kid. He is a beast.
Great news, hope Urban can close this one
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
I think this kid is going to be a monster in college and I think he will be ready to play right away. We really need this kid!! Go get him Urban!!
Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!
This kid is a stud - hopefully he commits!
DEB II
Awesome news! Been waiting to hear this for a while now. Finish him Urban!!!

When was our last gray box?
Bring him home Urban!
You have to hate losing more than you love winning! GO BUCKS!!
Great news but before we make him an OSU legend remember that we said the same stuff about Curtis Grant.
Alex I've been waiting on this post since the ESPN sparq Competition great news!!!!
Hardly home but always reppin

Damn it feels good to be a Buckeye....
Dear Mike Mitchell,
Come to Columbus, we have pretty much everthing... just need an abusement park!!
-signed Buckeye nation
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

This is awesome news. Go Urban!

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

BT and I were thinking along the same lines at the same time. +1 for you sir.
247 is reporting that they believe Mitchell will be taking all 5 of his visits. The write-up is paywalled so I can't read it.

Mitchell will get the grey boxs rolling again
As this year has proven you can never have too many linebackers!
With Brionte Dunn coming up injured and out of action as Urban reported today, you can never have too many running backs either...
