My buddies little brother is their starting QB and his grandfather is on UK's BOT, he keeps telling me that everyone that interviews has turned the job down thus far.
The above information was given to me by a Proff from UK. I should have made that clear, him being hired as head coach has not been released, but the information I receive about UK from this proff is usually accurate.
I think Butch Jones, Darell Hazell or Mike Leach (if he was willing) would have been a better fit....Leach was actually an assistant at UK at one time - (somewhere, I have a recruiting letter from Kentucky with Coach Leach's signature, from 1997)
Darrell Hazell is not walking away from possibly the most electric player in college football for Kentucky, a school that is worse in almost every way than KSU
One of my best friends lives in Lexington and has season tix to UK football & basketball. He told me the other day that if he knew Kent State was gonna have the season they've had and only lose to Kentucky, he would've stormed the field after Kentucky beat them.
And go to the Music City Bowl. I have many friends who are UK fans and they are happy going bowling in Nashville. Rich Brooks took them there several times and the fans loved the guy.
He came in to the program when they got hit by some pretty heavy sanctions and it took him a few years but turned it around there. To have a football coach at UK consistently win 7 or 8 games is quite a feat really. They had 4 strait years where they did that and made it to 4 consecutive bowls winning 3.
You can't think of UK football in terms of how we look at football you have to approach it as IU would. If a coach came to IU and had 4 years in a row with at least 7 wins and he won 3 out of 4 bowl games in that 4 year stretch, we'd acknowledge them as one hell of a coach.
Trust me man, I know all about UK football. I'm well versed. I lived in Lexington during the Mumme through Brooks years. I went to numerous games with friends. I saw some good, some bad, and some ugly. I wasn't knocking Brooks. He did the best he could with what he had.
I didn't really take it that way, it was more a reaction to the comment about 500 being good enough at Kentucky. I don't think people realize how hard that really is. That's why I mentioned IU in my post. I'm kind of like you in exposure to UK. Virtually all of my friends and family went to UK or are diehard fans so when football is good(by their standards) I get to hear all about it!
I went to a UK basketball game with a friend who has season tickets at the tail end of the Tubby Smith years, and it was a weak team to be sure, but Rupp Arena had a couple thousand empty seats on the day of the bowl game. That's rare, even if it's a so/so UK basketball team and a decent UK football team. Brooks made UK football something people were interested in. As you said, they loved him down there.
Funny story about UK basketball. A good friend of mine who is a big UK fan left the US in 2007 to go to Africa on a 2 year missionary trip working with several orphanages and schools to build shelters and dig wells to bring villages clean drinking water. The guy left on his trip before Tubby Smith left UK for Minnesota and he completely missed the tenure of one Billy Clyde Gillispie. He didn't have much contact with friends and family while away and didn't really follow sports while gone either. Well, he comes back in 2009 and Calipari is UK's coach. How many UK fans do you know who wished they had completely missed the Gillispie era?
lol, Gillespie was my favorite UK coach. Either his first season or Tubby's last year there was a 2nd round tournament matchup with UConn and the UK fans thought it was a moral victory that they lost by less than 10 to UConn. They were ok with a 2nd round loss because they didn't get blown out by UConn, that's when I knew they had reached a new low in Lexington lol.
Good memory. Im sure you remember during the same time frame of many SEC NCs Kentucky beat Alabama, LSU and Auburn and gave Fla a real tough test at Fla knocking out Tim Tebow.
My greatest coach ever remark was a bit snide; however, I did think this move would make him look pretty good and could be a good stepping stone to a better job if he does get them back to being bowl eligible.
I admit, my view of UK football is that it is always as bad as it was this year (2-10) since I don't follow it, but after a little bit of of research, it appears that they have been bowl eligible for 3 of the last 5 years so maybe he needs to get them up to around 8 wins or so to be really impressive. The main thing he will need to focus on is in conference play as it looks like they have only won a couple games in conference per year in the last 5 years (minus this year).
You can kill a fly with your slipper or a cannon. Either way, the fly dies. -Ramzy
Traditionally you are absolutely right, UK is a bad football program. That's why it was pretty impressive what Rich Brooks did with that program. To get to 7 or 8 wins 4 years in a row at UK took a pretty impressive bit of coaching.
One thing is for sure. Stoops does have a very good Freshman and sophmore class he is inheriting so the cupboard will not be dry. I would think even with Joker back at a minimum they will be .500.
UK has always been on list but that will be a tough sale. My guess for Quick would be OSU because he has to know Strong is going to go. If not this year it will be soon after.
well with the offense that neal brown runs, it screams timmons for sure, and i would think quick also, time will tell. first neal brown has to be hired, he is from kentucky too.
Looks as if Stoops is targeting James Coley as OC bring him with him from FSU. Both are considered great recruiters. Fisher is gonna be gone to so this all makes sense.
I never will see UK as a football threat. They are a basketball school and football is what they watch to keep them entertained until basketball starts. Remember that one year North Carolina was good in football... well UK will be lucky to have that.
mack brown is a strong recruiter as well.... thats why im so glad we have urbz top recruiter top coach... urbz for prez!! btw unc has had some insanely gifted football players they may have gotten them there threw illegal recruiting but they had a lot of talent over here
Im sure Barker becomes a target as well along with the Sophmore from Madison Southern. Additionally they will target all of the high profile kids elsewhere. A new well respected coach can sometimes sale his ideas to a recruit and make them feel they are part of a rebuilding platform.
I talked to my friend Tim last night about the UK hiring. He's a big Kentucky fan so I wanted to get his thoughts.
He said he was @ work and one of his clients called him to let him know as the rumors were coming out. He said the guy calls and says " Hey man did you hear we got a football coach?" Tim says " No, who'd we hire?" The guy just says "Stoops." Tim says "Bob Stoops! No freakin' way he'd leave Oklahoma for Kentucky." The guy says "Nope. It's not Bob Stoops." Tim says "Mike Stoops!" The guy says "Nope, It's not Mike Stoops. It's uh, they're saying it's Mark Stoops". Tim says "Who the heck is Mark Stoops?"
Of course, then he looked up Mark Stoops and found out he was FSU's D-coordinator and he's okay with the hire. He would've preferred a guy with HC experience, but who knows, it might work out.
Barker worries me as well, just because we haven't offered yet. They could promise this kid the world and IF they get some high profile kids to commit, could decide grass is greener staying home.Hope I'm WAY off on my thinking.
Isn't Herman visiting him next week? I almost wonder if he doesn't get an offer on that visit. I don't worry so much about Quick to UK, but Timmons could get tired of being told to wait by Ohio State and realize they are trying to make sure guys the really want aren't going to commit before he gets an offer. At UK he could end up being the next Randal Cobb.
Quick, meh, I don't worry about him to UK at all.
Barker could be in play but I really think he's going to get an Ohio State offer pretty soon. Plus, he has so many other offers from great schools, I can't see UK really being a threat unless he's like Jared Lorenzon or Tim Couch and is just a diehard UK fan that decides to stay home.
Tim Couch, though, was a UK boy. He came from Leslie County which is 100% without a doubt UK country. If you are a great athlete from that part of the state you are going to UK. While NKY is pro-UK, it's not neccessarily in the blood up here like it is in a small mountain community like Couch came from. It didn't matter who was coaching UK back then, I believe Couch would of gone there no matter what.
According to 247 and Rivals, Barker is in the same boat with Kentucky as he is with OSU; without an offer. I'm not worried about Kentucky. If he doesn't get an OSU offer, it looks like he could be headed to South Carolina.
I honestly don't worry about UK at all. When all is said and done he's going to have a lot of impressive offers and would almost be foolish to go to UK.
The writing is on the wall for Timmons. If you look at everything it points to:
1. OSU telling Timmons that he is currently #3 on their list at WR - likely behind Quick and Gibson (of the attainable players).
2. OSU telling Timmons that due to scholarship reductions there will be limited room in the class and that they also have players at other positions that are higher up on their board (Bell and Dawson are my guesses, and possibly at LB giving what we've seen lately.)
3. Given 1. and 2., OSU has probably then said, but if miss on any one of these "number" of guys, you're getting an offer. But we won't know this for a while, so please hold tight.
Timmons wants to be at OSU and he won't know how the chips will fall, thus, he's in no hurry to decide because he can't make the decision he wants to. OSU probably told him they'd be able to let him know one way or another by January and closer to NSD.
I just hope the staff has been upfront with him about his chances here. Comments I read last week from him seemed to indicate he thinks he can commit, but won't until his mom sees the school. I hope they aren't stringing him along giving him hope, only to pull the rug out from under him. If the kid is aware of the situation and they've been honest with him, then good for him for holding out and hoping things work out for him.
Honestly, though, what other choice does he have? Look at his offer list. I would be doing the same thing, especially if I had a dream school like it appears he does.
Quick just said Louisville still number #1,only way that changes is if Strong leaves which is 50/50 at best.I say go with next man up,Timmons.Better to have sure thing than miss out on both because Quick sticks to his guns and we drag Timmons along. He 100% wants to be a Buckeye!!If the "Game" didn't convince Quick to jump on board, nothing ever will.Take the kid who wants it bad!!We need players with that kind of motivation!!
I agree, it sure does seem like a step down for an OC, but with rumors swirling that Jimbo Fisher is thinking about leaving Florida State, the guy might be thinking it's not such a bad idea to go to Lexington and join Stoops' staff.
Moo!

Stoops was just hired as UK's new Football Coach.
I like it. I think.
My buddies little brother is their starting QB and his grandfather is on UK's BOT, he keeps telling me that everyone that interviews has turned the job down thus far.

You are correct, I just heard it conformied from him. It looks like I was late to the party
Would that happen to be towles and his grandfather bunning
Twitter is ablaze with the news that Stoops has in fact been hired @ UK.
I think Butch Jones, Darell Hazell or Mike Leach (if he was willing) would have been a better fit....Leach was actually an assistant at UK at one time - (somewhere, I have a recruiting letter from Kentucky with Coach Leach's signature, from 1997)

As bad as UK is, they beat Kent St by 30+.
One of my best friends lives in Lexington and has season tix to UK football & basketball. He told me the other day that if he knew Kent State was gonna have the season they've had and only lose to Kentucky, he would've stormed the field after Kentucky beat them.
Dumb hire.
Mea culpa. Wrong Stoops.

I found your lost "e"!
It snuck over and said "hi" to Kentucky!
On topic: All he has to do is get UK Football to a .500 program to be hailed as one of the greatest coaches ever, right?

wonder if quick, timmons, bivins, and drew will maybe think about being a wildcat now.
stoops needs to try and keep them boys home to be a part of stoops troops
hoping stoops take a few recruits from ohio, instead of aacc getting them.wonder what effect stoops will have on aacc recruiting ohio?
Does mean Uk goes after Quick?
if neal brown becomes the oc, i think they go after quick and timmons and drew

^^ Dabo Sweeny is a great recruiter as well, doesn't always turn into wins.
I think KY got the wrong stoops, just like TN when they chose the wrong Dooley.

Could get interesting in recruiting if he hires right OC.Hell,we could lose Timmons and Quick real fast!!

Hering the same about Brown and Coley!! This could influence recruits we are after as well!!

considering DE coach DJ Eliot for the DC job and FSU OC James Coley for the same position at Kentucky...
Why would an OC go from FSU to UK for the same position? That seems really, really dumb unless there is a local connection or something
I agree, it sure does seem like a step down for an OC, but with rumors swirling that Jimbo Fisher is thinking about leaving Florida State, the guy might be thinking it's not such a bad idea to go to Lexington and join Stoops' staff.
I have heard Fischer was a micro manager on the offense side so this would in effect be a step up allowing him to call the plays etc...
